Deck Reviews / Re: U/W Spirits (SOI Budget Standard Deck) - Comments

Not to worry, I'm keeping rotation in mind! And, while it sucks to lose Anafenza and Ojutai's Command, they're the only pieces I'm really worried about; and I'm hoping that WotC give us more spirit support in Eldritch Moon to counterract those losses.

Obstructionism (Modern UW Eloquent Fog)

From the moment I saw it, I've loved Azor's Elocutors, and been dying to put it's unique ability to good use. I felt like the best way to do that was in a Turbo Fog shell.

The deck wins by either getting an Azor's Elocutors or (far less often) a Darksteel Reactor to critical mass by fogging out the other player for as long as is physically possible. An alternate wincon exists in the more traditional Luminarch Ascension, but that's the infinitely more boring route, and as a result usually not worth our time.

Some less traditional cards included here are the walls- specifically, Wall of Shards. Generally speaking, I wouldn't recommend it in any way; but in a deck that rarely relies on combat damage to score a win, an eight toughness flyer turn 2 can repel most threats right up to the late game. That being said, a case could also definitely be made for Guard Gomazoa, and I plan to try it out when I get a chance.

Paradox Haze is another card that rarely sees play anywhere, but here it's an allstar. The deck can be criminally slow at times, so anything that helps to speed us up is much appreciated; and Haze is a card that can put your opponent on an extremely fast clock. This is basically the reason for including Tezzeret's Gambit as well.

Finally, I know the mana base seems inefficient. That's because it is. Be that as it may, while I wholeheartedly recommend you use Fetches and Shocks if you have them, I'm on a relative budget, and the fact that the majority of the deck is white means that fixing is rarely an issue.

That's pretty much it! Sideboard has yet to be put together, but other then that feel free to leave suggestions, every little helps and all that!

Dawn Charm doesn't help against Storm, but it's one of the best fog effects in Modern in terms of utility. Sure, it's two mana, but for that you're getting a Burn counter (something very few fog effects help with), and another way to save your Goldnight Castigator if you don't have a Deflecting Palm in hand.

Deck Reviews / Re: UW Spirits- The best new budget Standard Deck?
« on: March 30, 2016, 09:24:05 pm »
Thanks for the reply! And that's definitely an interesting, and from what I can see very viable route to take. Personally, budget constraints would probably make an Esper mana-base more difficult to manage, although at the moment things don't seem to be too expensive, so who knows. Otherwise, I think the concept behind the deck is more than sound. And looking at it, the Revenant and the Pale Rider ARE pretty damn powerful, not to mention the access to far better removal in the side when black is added in.
With regards the other suggestions, I made a conscious effort to avoid token production in my own list- partly because I've done them to death, and wanted to see if I could stray away from them for a change, but mostly because they're kind of nonbos with Bygone Bishop, Always Watching and, to a lesser extent, Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit. However, a case could definitely be made for a more token based strategy, utilising the cards you were talking about!

Unfortunately not, man. If a dork says "add one mana OF ANY COLOUR to your mana pool", then you're good, because it doesn't have a mana symbol on it that isn't in reminder text. However, because Obelisk of Jund and it's ilk specify the mana they can produce by displaying the mana symbol, then (as far as I know) their colour identity is considered Jund.

Deck Reviews / UW Spirits- The best new budget Standard Deck?
« on: March 29, 2016, 11:09:32 pm »
At first, of all the tribes in Shadows over Innistrad, Spirits was the one I found most disappointing. Honestly, the support just isn't there in comparison to something like Vampires (shaping up to be a huge player in the coming Standard) or Wolves (with several good drops in each slot and a fancy new Planeswalker to boot). I was hoping that WotC would make more of an effort to focus on the 'blink' aspect of their abilities, but that was more or less completely eschewed, with only four or five spirits possessing etb triggers, and only two of which strong enough to play. To tell the truth, it just felt like Spirits were in the set because they kind of had to be. However, upon looking more closely I noticed one advantage that Spirits had over every other tribe in the set: they're bloody cheap and simple to construct. I mean, at the moment you can get the best mana base in the format for a two colour deck for about 25-30 euro (on Magiccardmarket, at least), and playsets of most of the other ca :Prds in the deck can be gotten for a few euro apiece. And, because I'm criminally poor at the moment, and wanted to try and make a Standard viable deck, I decided to give spirits a shot.

This is what I came up with: http://deckstats.net/decks/13738/454368-u-w-spirits-soi-budget-standar

The deck essentially functions as a UW flyers build. You all know the drill: swing in with small flyers such as Topplegeist, Rattlechains and Bygone Bishop;and pump those flyers up with Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit, Always Watching (incidentally, one of the single most flavourful and creepy cards in the entire set) and Thunderclap Wyvern. Stoneforge Masterwork may not seem optimized with the lack of token production in the deck, but I feel there's enough tribal support here to justify the two-of inclusion. Throw in some shenanigans with Spectral Shepherd/Rattlechains/Topplegeist, and you have yourself a decent deck.

So what does everyone think? Bear in mind that I'm a criminally bad Magic player at times, so any and all suggestions are welcome. :P Otherwise, thanks for taking the time out to read through, and I hope I've gotten some creative juices flowing!

Cool list, but Commander Rules state that you can't play anything outside your General's colour identity- so the Obelisk of Jund and Savage Lands have to go. Otherwise, you're good to go!

Great inventive deck idea, man, +1! But might I suggest Dawn Charm? It seems to be doing exactly what you want. Same with Riot Control, although i understand that 3 mana could be a turn off. And no fog deck is complete without Isochron Scepter- 2 mana to fog for the rest of the game is practically unrivalled value. Otherwise, I'm really loving this!

I agree with Bartley. Really like the idea, it's inventive and looks damn fun and derpy to play. But throwing in an inexpensive (money-wise) demon could just give the deck a little extra flair at the end of the game- not to mention the fact that it's getting 5 apostles into your graveyard for Nantuko Shrine.

Like the deck, man, but Crypsis and Epara's Enlightenment are no longer in Standard.

Dude, come on. You literally cannot play a wall deck that's running UW and NOT use Wall of Denial. It's legitimately the best wall in Magic, and while it IS protected from the Assault Formation, if you go from Rolling Stones to it then you're swinging for eight in the air. Which wrecks face.

I like it. :D Nice and simple, with the potential to be pretty powerful. Super budget too, so you can build on it if you want. I'm impressed. XD

Mycosynth Lattice is a must in this kind of deck. But I like the changes. :)

Like the deck idea, very inventive!! Fair warning- if you want to go Bant, bear in mind that Garruk Relentless is actually considered G/B because of the flip. :)
