Commander Deck Reviews / Ruric Thar - Pod / Purphoros

Ruric Thar - Pod / Purphoros

after playing this Pod theme with ruric for a few months, i've finally dialed it down.

this deck should do well against most commander decks compaired to other rurics i've seen.

it wont attract too much heat unless you want to go aggro (kiki jiki and combat celebrant are a sub theme bonus)

the way i play this reminds me alot of nekusar wheel. you just put your staples out slowly, and out of nowhere pop your hulk. put serporpod then purphoros of the forge out and then let the damage roll (50sh creatures total, 2 dmg per creature (4 if you put Torban out after Purphoros)  100 - 200 dmg per player, from pop. then, you get kiki and combat celebrant and swing to win.

the combo is quite easy to crack with this list of "kill hulk" cards i added in. and don't be afraid of losing 6 life to cast it if ruric is out, you will win the game by doing so, fashonably late, or way way to early. It rarely cracks in the middle, but when it does i find i get more combat action out of the deck.  no matter what, this is the best Gruul pod i could come up with. enjoy :)

(note: i purposely did not apply fetch land because it's honestly not worth the 1 life. there is zero life gain in this deck, its 100% stradegy, not luck of the draw. you WILL get to hulk, its just a matter of how your opponents view you on the battlefield.

Ruric Thar, the Unbowed: Pod/X-Combat Steps

the most fun i've had playing magic is with this pod combo commander.

with the right stuff, in the right order, you can do enough damage across the table just from pod that exceeds 140 dmg per player.

all you have to do is pop the hulk, and let purphuros, the battle forged do his thing, and bring creatures in a combo-style POD.

my favorite part is the Horror, i save him for last.
his power/toughness = damage dealt to all players this turn. meaning, 140+ / 140+ per player
(table of 6 = 5x 140+/140+ (700/700 trample)

it has trample. for those who may have tons of life, they wont after this pods.

take a look and see what order you might pod this :) all the possibilities!

Silumgar, The Drifting Death - Shapeshifter / Vdlkn Humiliator

i know the fetch land is odd, i just have to get some more to replace some basics.

i have yet to play this, lmk if you have any cards in mind to replace anything on here :)

always appreciate suggestions as i havent been playing for more than a few months now

Nekusar - Wheels / Combo

this is my version of a fun, but mean, but fun, but mean, wheel nekusar deck :)

shifts from group hug to mean af pretty quickly; with room for control on how hard or soft you want to hug the group.

My play group likes it for the free Draw (i.e. Temple Bell etc.) early game, as i tend to always hug everyone at first...
but once a board or two gets going, i start to slowly tax my way in.

if you like having fun while playing nekusar, (gets boring if its pure wheel) try this deck out.

i used a theft sub theme with this as well and it was fun.

Here's a few examples of what i used specifically

 1. Phyrexian infiltrator
 2. Captivating Crew
 3. Word of Seizing
 4. Goatnap
 5. Traitorous instinct
 6. Lose Calm
 7. Wrangle
 8. Mind Control
 9. Enslave
 10. Dack Fayden - (Still in deck for draw/discard and Artifact Steal juiciness!! ;D)

Samut the Pod Master

this deck is so much fun.

i've been tuning it up a bit and am only holding out on Kiki-jiki to avoid going infinite...

(in my playgroup, we concede when infinite triggers unless its down to the last 2 players.)

other than that, every card in this deck has a purpose, and is not based on any decklist whatsoever.
this is a Combo Pod/Fling with a great ability to put out alot of creatures very fast.

people often get confused seeing Samut, being she is 2 color to cast but is a Naya (3 coor/ red green white)

if you understand this theme and synergy well enough to suggest any better options of cards i haven't looked at, please mention below!

Nekusar - Wheel / Board-Theft combo

My first deck, new to mtg and I only play commander.

I’ve seen a lot of cool nekusar builds, but none having a mass-board theft ability.

It goes like this.

Step 1: Willbreaker and Archfiend of Ifnir on the battlefield together.

Step 2: Archfiend of Ifnir’s Discard / cycle ability, trigger -1/1 on all creatures.

Step 3: Thus triggering control of everything on the board.

(But wait, there’s a way around shroud/hexproofed creatures) WTf!?!

Let’s swap Archfiend of Ifnir with Vedalken Humiliator.

Step 1: Willbreaker + Vedalken Humiliator
(pre-requisite: 3 or more artifacts to trigger Vedalkin Humiliator’s “Metalcraft”
Very easy to do with this deck via tutor/draw triggers being there are at least 10 artifacts total.

Step 2: Attack with Vedalken Humiliator; Metalcraft triggers; bipass hexproof/shroud

Finally, creatures opponents control lose all abilities, and become 1/1’s UNDER YOUR CONTROL.

When your turn ends, they remain under your control as long as you control Willbreaker.

Turn ends; They are no longer 1/1’s... you have all commanders that were out,  wtf right?...

Imagine if you hexproof Willbreaker, or clone Willbreaker using Vesuvan Shapeshifter or Vizier of Many Faces. You can see the potential, though this is a sub-theme that would probably be better in a deck without cards that cause me to discard too: it’s under 9% chance to get all 3 out With my lack of tutor’s... but I may add a Diabolic Tutor for now to get by until I can get a Mystical Tutor.

If you have any card suggestions, or idea’s of other ways to trigger this nasty combo; even a better commander, please lmk!

I can’t find any topics on this combo, and the card’s are underrated imo.

If this goes off, it can not only turn the tide in one attacking 3/4, but it’s going to be the saltiest way to end a game I can imagine; especially if you luck out and take control of another shapeshifter to re-morph into a 2nd Willbreaker (it’s not legendary!)

Protean hulk is cool, but taking over up to 5 people’s creatures in one step, wtf...

Please tell me if I’m misreading anything before I start invest too far! Thanks for reading, appreciate all feedback.

Niv

vivid marsh compensates for lacking colored mana if I fail to draw mana rock or tutor one.
This does in fact make niv-mizzet harder to cast, but the combo of curiosity is one that I particularly like due to the advantage it gives me to combo mill myself and another person as long as I have reliquary tower and draw dmg out. (No one but myself plays price of knowledge besides me)
since I am running less lands than most prefer, It’s saved my ass to earn a spot in this deck for me.

overlooked the 2nd card dictate of kruphix
(Thank you for pointing this out!)😅
