Just to pile on - I use/prefer Dragon Shield Matte. They shuffle well without being too slick, I like the feel of the matte texture, they seem to hold up fairly well, and I love the color variety.

General Magic / Re: Losing interest?

Not to simply repeat much of what is already being said, but...

When I first started playing, a new set was exciting, but now they happen FAR too often. I can't even begin to name all the sets released in the past year. I maybe see one or two spoilers for each set before the next round of spoilers begin. I imagine I have missed some really cool cards because there is just too much to take in, and more specifically, I imagine I have missed some potential new commanders to build. This has also led me to plan, theorize, and build new decks less because I pay less attention to the new cards coming out.

This does lower my interest in the new releases of magic going forward; however, this is different from my interest in Magic overall. I am strictly a commander player, and I still look forward to playing with my group whenever I can. We used to play more often, but within the past year that has changed, and I very much miss playing on a weekly basis.

Curious...How many sets per year do you think would be a good number? I like the idea of one set per quarter, with maybe 1 special release throughout the year, capping at 6 sets max per year.  On this note, Commander deck pre-cons need to chill as well. Each yearly set was a cool thing to look forward to, now it's just another thing being released most of the time.

Saw in Half is also interesting for something like Serra Ascendant, you would get two 3/3 base power and toughness copies that each get +5/+5, so two 8/8s. I think it is more unique than a copy spell, and you can find some fun ways to game it.

Any other non-acorn cards been spoiled yet?

I can see Saw in Half getting a lot of play, so I am interested to see what other non-acorn cards the unset has.

Personally, I will be putting saw in half in a couple of my decks (ETB focused ones), especially my Gyruda, Doom of Depths deck. I think it will serve as a way to get more triggers on my Gyruda if someone tries to kill it, using it in response since Gyruda will die anyways and I can at least get two more ETB triggers.

Could I not have received so many downvotes? It's such blow on my ranking. I always thought deathtouch was concerning only combat damage. I'm wrong. I'm sorry. Don't hammer me so much with downvotes on stated opinion. Albeit that I praise more the stars on decks especially on my Tribals.
Regards:
Chavo

First, downvotes are no fun, if I see I get one, I would sometimes like to know why, but it's not a huge deal. Second, I don't typically downvote much and I did not downvote yours. However, I can see why someone did downvote your post. You say don't hammer you on opinion, but the problem is this wasn't an opinion thread, this was a rules thread, and commented with wrong information. Rules are not opinion, sorry man.

Yeah, deathtouch is any damage, not just combat, which is why something like Viridian Longbow is often found in decks that feature a deathtouch commander.

If I was so worried about losing I would just run nothing but stax decks 😃. But seriously I don’t worry about winning or losing a game that has no ramifications in my life.

This. I love this.

Commander Deck Reviews / Re: Araumi of the Dead Applause for Encore
« on: November 16, 2021, 04:59:30 pm »
In my experience Dredge works really well with Araumi. Golgari Thug has worked really well in my Araumi deck.

Also having a few untappers can be helpful so you can activate Araumi more than once has worked well for me.

While completely unoriginal, Thassa's Oracle is a simple wincon that works well with Araumi strategy.

My Araumi deck is not designed to be super competitive, but more for funsies. It is basically a copy of WizardSpartan's deck with a few minor changes. - https://deckstats.net/decks/154132/1806615-araumi-encore-etb-edh

Commander Deck Reviews / Re: Advice needed - Omnath, Locus of Mana

Took the time to look at it and my questions became irrelevant. So you still need to cut 16 cards it looks like, here are a few I would personally cut:
Well of Discovery
Primal Surge
Darksteel Colossus
Bind
Loxodon Warhammer
Illusionist's Bracers
Nylea, God of the Hunt
Platinum Angel

As you said, you can probably limit some of your ramp. I personally would eliminate some of the higher CMC ones.

You also have somewhere around 8 tutor effects; I personally try to avoid tutors because it feels like they lead to the exact same game every time, and it seems that you have enough of the same type of wincon/effects that the tutors aren't necessary.

Commander Deck Reviews / Averna - Cascade - EDH

Averna - Cascade - EDH

Going for a Cascade themed deck here, but also want some landfall to work with the cascade trigger from the commander.

Next step is to exchange cards in my ramp section for more removal/interaction spells.

Looking for a wincon to add to this deck that fits the theme I have going; any suggestions would be appreciated.

Card alternatives:
- https://www.mtgassist.com/ - if you have to find that one budget alternative ;)

I was going to suggest this one as well. It does a good job of listing cards with similar effects from one of your choosing, especially when the wording may be different and not show up on a Scryfall search.

So just curious, since I seem to be missing something, but why would this commander be useful in a singleton format? Or are you just wanting the constant shuffles?

Commander Discussion / Re: How do you start building your decks?
« on: October 25, 2021, 09:48:29 pm »
I start with a commander and build from there. I personally like very commander-centric decks. I want the deck to be built based on what the commander can do or supports. My strategy is always centered upon the commanders theme. This means I even avoid putting in some "good" cards because they don't fit with what I want to do. I think the easiest example is a card like Torment of Hailfire, a really good card that can win games on its own, but I don't want to win that way if I am playing my Gyruda, Doom of Depths clone/mill deck.

I understand this makes a deck less "competitive", but I am not and do not want to be approaching cEDH levels. I like variance and creativity, and focusing on a commander for a deck helps make that deck unique. I enjoy winning, and I do want to make sure my decks can win games, but my priority is enjoyment, if winning means less creativity/uniqueness for more proven methods then that gets boring real quick. Josh Lee Kwai said the following a couple times in recent Command Zone videos and I love his sentiment, "I don't want to build my deck to win, I want to play my deck to win." In context he was talking about knowing what other people at the table were playing and designing a deck to beat theirs, and he would rather build a deck he enjoys and play it to the best of his ability. I think this is a good way to looks at things.

Aura Shards is Kinda meh, if you're getting infinite ETB, you kinda wanna win the game, although it is good when you don't have infinite ETB, just using a Shrieking Drake to continuously blow up stuff is pretty cool.

Same with God-Eternal Oketra, You can't win on the spot unless you have a haste effect, and that's yet another piece you need for your win to work. Same with Primeval Bounty.

Tome of the Guildpact seems good, but it doesn't work for some of your Bouncers, so I would cut it as well.

The storm cards also seem very unnecessary, you already have a bunch of those ETB's .

In the place of these cards, I would add some card draw so you can dig through your deck or some tutors if you want the deck to be faster. Hope this helped!

Thanks, you make a good point about some of them not winning on the spot. I think that's a good way to approach some of this.

Well, I have it at 100 cards.
Lands are placeholders, will most certainly be adding some multi-colored lands.

So, again, couple of questions:
1) What ETBs should I still cut?
2) Should I keep all the cost reducers I currently have?

I still need to grow the interaction/protection package, and I would like to throw a little ramp in as well. So any suggestions on the above two questions will help me make room for those.
