Commander Discussion / Re: Best Card In Your Deck
« on: August 30, 2023, 07:24:00 pm »
For my Teysa Karlov deck, it's the holy trinity of skullclamp, Phyrexian Altar, and Reassembling Skeleton, representing the three pillars of the Aristocrats deck: sac outlets, death payoffs, and recursive creatures. A close second would be Elenda, the Dusk Rose simply for its ability to draw hate and end games.

For my Daryl, Hunter of Walkers deck, it's a tie between Seedborn Muse for its ability to give me a ton of value and Aether Flash because it fits the deck perfectly.

My Daryl, Hunter of Walkers Gruul Control deck. If you let it set up, it is miserable to play against. It's just wraths that deal 2 damage to each creature along with some synergy pieces.

Yeah, the reskins are cool. However, I run Daryl, Hunter of Walkers, and as that deck is supposed to be an irritating control deck, I see no need to remove the version of the commander that bothers Magic players more.

After two and a half years of deckbuilding experience and a whole lot of thought, I have redone my old forced combat Thantis, the Warweaver list. The new list has some notable improvements, which are detailed in the list, and overall feels better. Any thoughts?

Deck Reviews / My first attempt at a cube
« on: August 03, 2023, 10:13:40 pm »
https://deckstats.net/decks/154264/3146857-my-chaotic-half-unplayable-mul/en

This was my first every attempt at building a cube. It is a amalgamation of a regular budget cube with added elements of multiplayer games and utter chaos. It still needs a significant amount of work, but I've enjoyed it throughout the testing so far.

Overarching Draft Archetypes:
Sultai Attractions (this one needs some fixing or changing)
Abzan Hatebears (works well with other weenie and aggro strats)
Mardu Politics/Aristocrats (strangely fun)
Jeskai Chaos (probably going to refine this into a more noncreature spells matter theme, but keep the chaos)
Temur Dragons (Dragons :3 -still working on making it feel like you'd want to draft a dragon tribal rather than throwing dragons at something else)

Jund Cheating (as in reanimation and cheating creatures into play - just realized I should add Sneak Attack as I was typing this) (also needs work)
Naya Tokens (good for now but other cards need to produce some more tokens to support this)
Bant Counters (straightforward, slight adjustment needed)
Esper Dungeons (I like dungeons, and initiative also pairs well with the Mardu monarch cards)
Grixis Spellslinger (good old fashioned cantrips and removal fun)

Some of the changes that I intend to make soon will be adding in more AFR cards with dice rolling to increase randomness, tweaking the flawed overall themes, especially Sultai, and taking recommendations or suggestions on how to improve. I've used CubeCobra's playtest feature to try drafting, and it's been pretty fun so far. Thank you for reading, and I welcome any help from more experienced cubers!

(Oh, yeah, there's conspiracies for more options, and I am welcome to adding UnSet and Playtest cards if anyone knows some good ones.)

The (in my opinion) best line is to pod up to Trophy Mage, find Thousand-year elixir, cast it, then activate it, untapping Vannifar. From here, grab Fatestitcher, untap Vannifar, then find Tidewater Minion and repeat. Your 6-drop can be either Great Oak Guardian or Woodland Bellower, and either way, you're grabbing Protean Hulk. Now, unearth Fatestitcher, untap Vannifar, and find your 8-drop plus the cards from the hulk. Combo Achieved!

22
yeah, some of the combo lines can be pricy, but basic ones aren't too expensive, and Protean Hulk isn't obnoxiously expensive. The Spellseeker/Crop rotation/Wirewood lodge/Minamo, school at water's edge lines are more expensive. And if you need just one card, Intruder Alarm wins the game on the spot with Vannifar.

23
Here we go... Vannifar is often seen as a mid-tier (I think) CEDH commander with far faster and consistent combos. While your combo might work, the ultimate goal of Vannifar is to hit Protean Hulk, which allows you to grab combo pieces. The most common is probably Ezuri, Claw of Progress, Sage of Hours, and 4 0-drop creatures that can trigger Ezuri. Infinite turns can find you the stuff to loop Beast Within, destroy all of your opponents permanents, then Cyclonic Rift them away. I'm not a Vannifar expert, but there are some pretty good guides online involving her combo lines and interaction.

Commander Discussion / Re: Cards that are no longer staples.

Ehhhhh, I’d argue that the pain lands are excellent for any deck with budget constraints, especially after the reprints, and Craterhoof Behemoth still acts as the “win the game” card for many green decks, but there are so many other cards and decks that you tend to see them less.

Temple of the False God is only a staple because people saw past the downside in early edh, and because it was printed in every precon imaginable. There are so many better options to run. Heck, I'd even run Guildless Commons over Temple.

26
Obligatory Esika, God of the Tree // The Prismatic Bridge and Ink-Treader Nephilim post for everyone who enjoys targeting stuff (for good or bad.) It's much less reliant on Mondrak, whom I wouldn't even include in this list, but it gives the same general feel, plus you get access to some superb draw options. (the Shadowmoor Wisps cycle, Renegade Tactics, Fists of Flame etc.)

27
Finally, my prayers have been answered! In-universe version of Darryl, Hunter of Walkers! Now the only complaint about my deck will be that it lacks a wincon besides Vigor / Blasphemous Act and Ezuri's Predation!
(seriously, this deck needs a rework.)

Commander Discussion / Re: Green Sun's Twilight
« on: May 17, 2023, 06:25:34 pm »
I'd probably run Invasion of Ikoria, especially in a slivers deck, since it is feasible to flip the battle and only costs one more mana, plus you can search your entire deck, not just the top X cards. And yes, I know the commander can find other slivers, but I still would not play Green Sun's Twilight.

I was planning a Mila Boros superfriends deck, but adding blue is too good to pass up. Boros superfriends is interesting, but adding blue gives you better draw options, Oath of Teferi, and Deepglow Skate, to name a few. Planning to run Teferi, Who Slows the Sunset + The Peregrine Dynamo + anything that taps for 2+mana for a game winning combo. Besides, Atraxa, Praetors' Voice can't recur a Deepglow Skate with Nahiri, the Unforgiving.
