Deck Reviews / [Standard] SBMtG budget Mono black burn

SBMtG budget Mono black burn

Dev’s 5$ fall 2018 rotation proof deck with some of my on modifications I have replaced walk the plank with cast down, and added 2 field of ruin and a scavenger grounds because I have those cards already without my additions it’s like 5-10$ and test have been really successful it’s an awesome deck

32
So this is one of my favorite things to do and this post is inspired by Dev from STBMtG's recent $5 mono black rotation proof burn deck video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUKNBDIyFSA

In the video he says the at Vampire Sovereign is basically a reprint of siege rhino, its really not but if you squint really hard like he says to it yeah it kinda is not really.

LSV also does this when he does draft videos and stuff and I have some of my own

Ghitu lavarunner is basically goblin guide at common, gearsmith prodigy is also kind of a blue goblin guide, bone picker is basically a delver of secrets.

I can't remember some of the more ridiculous lsv ones but he has had some wild ones for sure. What about you guys do you have cards that could be interpreted as a far better card.

yeah also all the land enchanments that double a lands mana with all the untap effects is always good. Also growing rites of itlamac is a good budget alternative to cradle

murder is one that never makes my cut its great for casual play but being double black makes it kinda hard and 3 mana in standard can be a lot, although instant speed makes it far more playable. also I always want to jam like mana flare, or heartbeat of spring into my decks but usually giving my opponents a bunch of mana is never worth it.

As a response to the ramp that Wolff and Soren suggested I steered away from the green mana elves and stuff although birds is probably fine because of how hungry the deck is for blue mana. alot of the big fatty leviathans and stuff are mostly blue mana and I don't know that elves are great in this deck yeah they tap for green and maybe the  deck ends up heavy green to start with then end game blue heavy so some like cryptolith rite to make the elves tap for blue isn't a bad idea. Although while putting my preliminary list together it felt like a mono blue deck splashing green almost. I may be wrong I don't know

Also breeding pool is probably not a bad idea for this deck. and unfortunately I think the only other U/G duel is trop and that's not really an option.

I build a first draft list for this guy the other day I don't think all of the cards are under $5 but here is my list this is the first draft and it needs alot of work still so yeah

This deck is going to be really hungry for blue mana so the ramp my friend and I were thinking of going towards was land enchantments like fertile ground and utopia sprawl with a lot of untap target land effects. also this deck really benefits from island walk so cards like spreading seas are definitely worth it.

another hug from magus of the vineyard, and a little extra ramp from gaea's touch

Revision 3

Added/removed cards:
-1 Lurking Predators
-1 Migratory Route
+1 Gaea's Touch
+1 Magus of the Vineyard

Path of ancestry is interesting but its eh for me, I'm not going to get the scry often enough for it to be worth it and this deck generates so much mana that paying one for rupture spire and transguild passage isn't always a problem although I do find myself being frustrated by that more often than I like to admit. Felidar Sovereign sounds funny but I need to put in more effects that gain me life when I draw cards for it to be really worth it I think tho that would be sweet.

I like the niv idea that sounds sweet.

Thanks for the suggestions and stuff.

I am planning on putting like 3 or 4 more howling mine effects to really ensure that everyone gets hugged all the time. also maybe everyone play extra land effects.

Hey Don't Mind Me I'm Just Hugging You to Death

Its the 2016 hugs deck I have upgraded and am continuing to upgrade and change up I have decided that this deck needs to win by comboing off so i am going to put in a couple of lab maniac packages maybe a couple of combos or something not sure yet.

suggestions are welcome

I think you are missing a key thing in this deck, removal. And you have some awesome removal at your disposal, I would say 4 copies of shivan fire, and mayber 2 or 3 copies of Fight with Fire. Fight with Fire is awesome because if you do get to kick it you can just aim it at their face for game. I would also say cut run amok, fling, krosan druid and maybe warlords fury, and wild onslaught. I would also play 4 hallar, and some amount of verix blade wing. verix is only like 2$ so he isn't going to blow your budget. also Grand Warleader Rahda is pretty good in a kicker deck and you definantly want 4 elfhame druids because this deck is going to be really mana hungry. A lot of the ramp creatures are elves so Marwyn seems pretty good. you could drop her and play grow from the ashes. also maybe play 4 shivan fire and 2 lighting strike or go 3 and 3 or cut abrade and go 4 and 4 its up to you. I would also add fight with fire to my list for sure.

I built a deck similar to this awhile back this is my list. Idk what your budget is but this is around 60$ to cut down the budget get rid of sheltered thicket, and rootbound crag for evolving wilds, and timber gorge.

Here is my build

I hope this helps! :)

Deck Reviews / [EDH / Commander] LEVIATHANS

LEVIATHANS

This is just the first edition of this build. I think it is lacking in targeted removal, protection, ramp, and draw. This is a flavor deck more than anything. any suggestions are more than welcome.

Since the dawn of man long have tale of the sea been told. Sailors of new and old have whispered tales of legendary monsters, beasts, the oceans greatest predators. They fear only the ocean and its whims as they can only fathom and fear what lurks in the depths below. The Leviathan, a beast so massive it could swallow even the biggest ships whole. Some have been driven mad, gone insane from what they have seen. The lone survivor washes ashore empty eyed and rambling with fear and distress. A man like that will never sail again. So take heed of these tales and be cautious of the sea. Even the bravest of men fear only the stupid ones don't have fear. And if you plan on hunting these any of these monsters down, well all I can say if we meet again it will be over a pint of ale in hell.

General Magic / Re: Card copies in a sideboard

in my burn sideboard i play 4 of destructive reverly but I wouldn't main deck it usually 4 ofs in side boards are for shifting your decks play line, it makes an enigma drake a control deck it gives aggro a longer game plan that kind of thing. sideboarding is hard and is a skill that is not easy to master most of the time unless its obvious to me i have no idea what im doing.

alot of times one ofs in side boards are like a last chance got em card that you only want to see once like in your opening hand or late game. Some side boards in modern are like 13 one ofs and then 2 of one card or any combo like that. however when that happens a lot of those one ofs do the same thing or target the same strategy.

A good example is Collective Brutality, often you see a one or 2 of in side board, but if its just a one of its to add redundancy. Like if I am playing against control with jund brutality is just another copy of thoughtseize or inquisition for me, or an early removal spell.
My burn side board is only a few cards at 4 and 3 ofs, but im trying to cover my bases for stuff im weak against. and a lot of times i don't really side board because im trying to just stay consistent.

One ofs are great for facing a super open meta as Monte said, and alot of time those one ofs may do the same thing in a slightly different way and each are good against the same decks but in different ways.

If you are playing modern, jeskai has a lot more burn based removal and can finish the game with a little bit of burn sometimes. Its a very good deck. I think if you are serious jeskai with snapcaster, jace, and colonade is  great deck. It also tends to be more reactive than proactive. more counters and stuff.
Personally I have a casual jeskai deck that is a spell slinging midrange deck with young pyromancer and monastery mentor.

I think esper is a super sweet 3 color control option. Because you get to play stuff like inquisition thought seize and dark confidant. also u get access to lingering souls which is really good as well. If i was going to play esper i would be playing jace and mentor as win cons. but mostly play naya burn so i love the burn side of jeskai, but its up to you control is pretty solid in modern rn so yeah.

Good luck brewing!
