General Magic / question about tormod's crypt
« on: May 20, 2017, 06:52:58 pm »
So I'm brand new to LGS magic and last night was my first FNM modern night. I had a blast but had an interaction which left me with some questions.

I was playing living end, had a bunch of creatures in the graveyard, six lands out, violent outburst and beast within in my hand. My opponent has a tormod's crypt on the field. While I ramped I kept three lands open so I could beast within as a response to a crypt trigger. At six lands, I cast violent outburst for the cascade- in response, he sac'd tormod's crypt. In response to THAT, I cast beast within, believing that as it goes on the stack, it would prevent tormod's crypt from exiling my graveyard.

I'm a bit confused as to why this doesn't work and what I could have done to get around it. The way the other dude and the judge explained it, when tormod's crypt is tapped, it's sacrificed as part of the cost and it's GONE and cannot be responded to. This confuses me because I thought that anything instant-speed could go on top of the stack of, well, anything. Could I have cast beast within first to feint out the tormod's crypt, then cast violent outburst in response to the trigger to get my living end out before the graveyard exiles?

I just want to get this straight in my head :)

I kind of agree with you, and kind of don't- archfiend of ifnir's ability is incredible, almost a nonstop board wipe if my opponent is trying to play creatures, but as many games I've had with this list essentially end with living end, it IS striking me as more of a sideboard card. All the same I think I'd prefer to sub in architect of will rather than deadshot minotaur, so there's no risk of killing archfiend of ifner myself when he IS out :3

I'm also dropping the count of igneous pouncer and valley rannet to 2 each, this has been amazingly consistent mana wise :) I've played dozens of games with this list on untap.in in the last couple days, and I've gotten at minimum 2/3 wins EVERY single time with the exception of one loss to a janky combo deck :3

definitely leaning towards purchasing this list paper ^^

Living End on a budget!

So, this is my attempt at making Living End as budgetable as possible while still running fairly smoothly. Landbase wise, we utilize the cheaper painlands, and replace our fetch lands with igneous pouncer and valley rannet, including one of each relevant shock land for options.

Suggestions very welcome!

I think miasmic mummy is a strong suggestion! Best case scenario I get a turn 2 exhume on the eldrazi but having other options can't be bad. It WILL require testing though, because that turn 2 dig ( cathartic reunion, tormenting voice or faithless looting) has been a very important setup stage. I think being able to get a creature/dragon enchantment into the graveyard for setup may make up for that though.

When I first built this deck, I ran 4 bojuka bogs to eliminate my opponent's graveyard prior to an exhume- but then, my previous version of this deck is madness based and had more lower level creatures/removal. This deck, without sideboard, ignores your opponent's creatures entirely in favor of a fast and more powerful exhume, so constantly drawing unnecessary bojuka bogs was turning out to be detrimental.

well, it's a pauper deck, man- I've been toying with greater sandwurm, but the rest of those are uncommon :(

I DID, just now, change the decklist to reflect the inclusion of Shred Memory (replacing Manamorphose)- being able to transmute into exhumes should be excellent, although with the amount of dig I'm playing it already reached them pretty quickly :)

General Magic / Aftermath in graveyard
« on: April 18, 2017, 08:49:38 pm »
Hey, I've got a quick question about the new aftermath cards. When an aftermath card is in the graveyard, does it count as one or two sorceries? It's one card but two spells so I'm not sure how it rules. Asking in relation to bedlam reveler. Thanks!

Nice deck! I'd suggest throwing some rancor in there, insanely powerful card in this deck I would think- swinging with a 3/1 menace turn 2, and then getting your rancor back when you sac insolent neonate feels REAL good ;) that enchantment just lays on the pressure!

Horror of the Broken Lands looks like it could be amazing for this deck :) 1drop cycler for drawing/dredge and I would think it could be a huuuge heavy hitter lategame!

Okay, to be clear, this deck all but requires mulliganing to and then placing heartless summoning. It's not a t1 deck and I wouldn't recommend playing  It if there's money on the line ^^
