General Magic / Re: Question about land
« on: January 21, 2024, 05:56:41 pm »
Thank you but does this mana also apply to subsequent rounds?

I'm not sure what you mean by subsequent rounds, but the land stays on the battlefield while mana empties as each step and phase of the turn ends.

Tokens cease to exist once they leave the battlefield. However, they do trigger any abilities "Whenever a creature dies..." or "Whenever a creature leaves the battlefield..."

Thank you for the suggestions!

No Blasphemous Act?  Would generate quite the life swing.  Maybe buy you a turn.

Blasphemous Act is tempting, but I don't yet have a way to really weaponize all that lifegain, besides Bolas's Citadel. I already have 1 mana spells that boardwipe and don't hit my stuff, so Blasphemous Act (and Chandra's Ignition) are out for now.

Call Forth the Tempest out of your Maybeboard can generate quite an explosive turn.

Yes, that's the hope, but 8 mana is a lot. I'm definitely going to try and slot this in at some point.

Maybe Chimil, the Inner Sun for some repeating Discover along plus making your spells uncounterable.

Trumpeting Carnosaur might fit in this deck?

Chimil I like. Thank you for this! It will definitely help with the card advantage aspect that this deck struggles with. It's in high demand right now so it will be hard to find a copy, but I'll try. As for the Carnosaur, it doesn't really have any synergy with the deck, it's just a big creature that also gives me something else.

This seems like a cool idea. Have you checked if your playgroup is okay with it? Personally, I would not like to play against a deck with 20 boardwipes. Maybe you could make it a subtheme and drop down to like 7-10 board wipes? I’m imagining 20 board wipes will lead to 3 hour games…

Yeah they're fine with it. We're a pretty solid friend group who don't get salty over anything and play with stronger decks than most. But three hour games is a concern, which is why I'm looking for suggestions of cards that will close out the game. The boardwipe strategy works, I just need to nail winning afterwards.

Commander Deck Reviews / Judith Boardwipes
« on: January 18, 2024, 10:39:33 pm »
It's been a while since a commander has peaked my interest. The newly spoiled Judith, Carnage Connoisseur does just that.

This deck gives low-mana low-damage spells like Blazing Volley deathtouch to turn them into 1-sided boardwipes. Even if they're not asymmetrical (Shake the Foundations) I have ways to keep Judith alive and I'm okay with losing the imps. When possible the deck will run and instant/sorcery over a permanent so I can get some imp tokens.

The issues with the deck right now are two-fold. First, it's a proper spellslinger deck, but I'm having trouble with card draw. It's very easy for this deck to blow through its resources, which will give my opponents time to rebuild from a wipe. Second, I don't have an efficient way of closing out the game after the wipe. It's very slow after turn 5, so I need some good finishers.

Any suggestions?

Deck Reviews / Re: Need Advice On This Counter Heavy Deck

I don't know much about standard, but it looks like you need a sideboard. Look at the decks you're going up against and include tech pieces in your sideboard to counter those strategies.

Turn 1: Sol Ring.
Turn 2: Smothering Tithe.
Turn 3: Felidar Sovereign.
Turn 4: Win.

So that was lucky.

After that, did all of your opponents vow to pay for your Smothering Tithe forever more?

Nah, and it's not like that would have made a big difference. Any ramp spell of mine would have accomplished the same result. It was the lack of removal that screwed them.

I don't have Lens, but I do run Scrying Sheets in my mono-blue deck, and I plan to upgrade my other monocolored decks with snow lands sooner or later.

Do you need any top-deck manipulation to make scrying sheets work? Because paying 3 mana to maybe get something doesn't seem worth it.

Mill is inherently weaker in Commander because instead of just one 60-card deck there are four 99-card decks, that's 297 cards!

Does this deck often play in pods of 5 players? Or is this a miscalculation?

You also do bring up a very good point about how mill is a generally weaker strategy than combat damage. So how is this deck able to do mill more effectively? About how often is this deck able to win by milling everyone out? And how do you not lose to combat damage before then?

And as always, I would like to know why these cards are excluded:

Arcane Signet
Court of Cunning
Explore
Fleet Swallower
Ramunap Excavator
Seedborn Muse
Traumatize
Wilderness Reclamation

It seems to me like you're playing a strategy more similar to Nekusar, the Mindrazer than Queza, Augur of Agonies. Queza only cares if you draw cards, while Nekusar is themed around making your opponents draw; the exact strategy your deck is using. Why did you choose Queza instead of Nekusar? And what advantages does Queza have running this strategy compared to Nekusar?

I would also like to know why you're not using these cards:

Alhammarret's Archive
Faerie Manstermind
Fellwar Stone
Notion Thief
Path to Exile
Rhystic Study
Sanguine Bond
Talisman of Dominance
Talisman of Hierarchy
Teferi's Ageless insight
Teferi's Puzzle Box
The Second Doctor

Imagining a white land, that taxes another player. (white needs more taxes)

Like Rhystic Cave?

so having access to all cards would lead to decision paralysis.

I agree 100%

Right... because you own 1 copy of every card in existence. Are you still able to keep that up with all the product overload?

And do you ever decide to not buy a second copy of a card and just proxy it instead?
