Commander Discussion / Re: Why are Proxies so relatively rare?
« on: December 29, 2023, 04:11:05 am »

Right... because you own 1 copy of every card in existence. Are you still able to keep that up with all the product overload?

And do you ever decide to not buy a second copy of a card and just proxy it instead?

I wondered if there would be anyone reading that post who remembered the depth of my collection.

I did not buy the Honor Among Thieves Secret Lair.  I am awaiting the Universes Within versions and hoping the prices will drop.
I do not yet have the entire set from Lost Caverns of Ixalan.
Aside from those,  I have still kept up.

That said, I do plan to slow down my purchasing in 2024.  Along with the product overload, individual prices of each product are steadily increasing.
I am still hopeful, as singles prices have been bottoming out lately.  So I'll see how it goes.  I just may be steadily several sets behind.

Not sure what you're asking about the proxies.  For most cards, I only allow myself 1 copy of any given card across all my decks.  There is almost always an alternative.  Once I have obtained a playset of a single card through Commander Precons, I will allow myself multiples.  This gets me Command Tower, Sol Ring, and Arcane Signet in every deck.  Among several other staples.  Aside from that, if I want a card in a second deck, I will either deconstruct the first deck or find an alternative for one ofthem.  There is almost always a viable alternative.

so having access to all cards would lead to decision paralysis.

I agree 100%

Commander Discussion / Re: Nethroi as a Commander
« on: December 08, 2023, 11:27:20 pm »
Is there a way to make Nethroi, Apex of Death a viable commander? I don't think you can mutate from the command zone, so you would have to allocate a lot of deck space to bounce effects to get him back to your hand and it really just doesn't seem worth it. Has anyone here made him, or any of the mutate creatures from ikoria, work well?

Mutate is an alternative cost to cast the spell.  These do function from the Command Zone, just as they would from your hand.  Commander Tax is still applicable.

To further clarify the point,

The new spliced on text ceases to exist when the original card moves to exile.  Much the same way that a creature that has been modified loses all of its changes when it gets flickered.

Commander Discussion / Re: Commander Two-headed giant rulings

I pulled up that ruling because everything I read says 2HG uses the unified deck construction rules, but that was the only place I could find that actually defined what that meant.

I see what you mean.  I've never noticed this kind of thing before.  Unified Deck Construction is not in the Comprehensive Rules anywhere.  Nothing about deck construction rules in the Two-Headed Giant section.  There is a little blurb that sanctioned multiplayer formats MAY use some other rules with a link to the Magic Tournament Rules.  A bit weird.

MTR 8.4 Unified Deck Construction Rules

MTR is the Magic Tournament Rules.  These only apply to sanctioned tournaments.  This section applied to Team Standard format, where there could only be a total of 4 copies of a given card among all three team members.  There were three people on this type of team.  And despite being called 'Team', the events were played 1v1.  Each member of the team gets paired up with a member of another team.  I don't know if they still do this kind of thing at sanctioned events.  I haven't heard about it in quite a while.

It is not baked into casual Two-Headed Giant rules that the card-quantity limit be shared among players.

There were 12 people participating in the event.  We were "randomized" into pods of 4.  The software assigned 5 points to a winner and 1 point to each member of the pod in the event of a draw.

I came in 3rd overall for the event.

There was also a silent auction.  Many gaming items up for grabs.  I won this Command Tower alter.

I don't see any card draw.  You will quickly run out of gas without it.

Quick Study
Consider
Brainstorm
Windfall
Rhystic Study
Mind Stone
Syphon Mind

these are but some option.  Blue has all the card draw spells.

Thank you very much for giving this deck a once-over.  It is much appreciated.  I shall incorporate these changes.

The event is on October 28.  I'll let everyone know how it goes.  How this deck fares, and the event in general.

If there was an EDH version of this deck....

Which commander would be best?

Sounds like Villainous Choice.  I might suggest Missy.

Life's weird for me right now,

I totally get it.  I also don't have a lot of time these days for such deck building.  Thank you very much for your assistance.

cEDH is not typically my thing.  I like the charity event.  My goal is not completely smash the event.  Merely to interact enough to be relevant to the game.  And perhaps work toward my endgame while doing so.  I will likely only play this deck the one night. Then disassemble.  It doesn't need to be finely tuned.
