Why this commander instead of Niv-Mizzet, Parun? It's a one-card combo with stuff like Curiosity.

Ghyrson is a deck I was already thinking about building.  I figured I could make it efficient enough for competitive play. (?)
I was thinking a 3 drop commander with ward 2 might be decent.  No?

I will definitely consider Niv.  Perhaps in the 99.  Perhaps swapping out the commander.

Speaking of which, what is the deck's combo/gameplan? It looks like the plan is to play the control aspect first and then win through incremental damage.

Correct.  If I can get out 2 or three things that all trigger 1 damage per spell cast, the damage may be a bit more than "incremental".

Commander Deck Reviews / cEDH for Charity Event [seeking advice]
« on: October 11, 2023, 01:23:03 am »

LGS is hosting a cEDH event for Charity.  The charity is Extra Life, benefiting the local Children's Hospital.

cEDH is not typically my jam.  Not completely sure what to expect.  I've put together this deck.  Any advice on cEDH would be much appreciated.
Should any of these card not be here because they will utterly suck in cEDH?
Am I missing something that is an absolute bomb in cEDH?

Thank you.

May I ask, what is the Abandoned Sarcophagus doing? I can't figure out how it interacts.

It isn't.  Not sure what happened to the decklist.  It somehow got modified after I retired the deck.  I have reverted the list to it's prior configuration.  It is a beast tribal deck.

Sheldon

In honor of the late Sheldon Menery, I have assembled the deck he called "You Did This to Yourself."  I'll be playing this deck at Commander Night this week.

This was just announced at about 10AM EDT.  From the facebook page of Sheldon Menery's partner.

I know Sheldon touched many lives and I can’t put into words how much he will be missed.

Sliver deck has been spoiled. Can’t decide if I like any of the new cards or not. Any thoughts?

And yet no Hex.

I am a fan of the card Hex

This is a copy of The Professors "precon" that he compiled this weekend.  It is the upgraded version.  With another three cards swapped out because I had them in another deck.

I didn't even name my deck until I had pulled all the cards.  I was looking for a word that would be a synonym for "curse".

After i play a few games, I may make some changes.  Hex will certainly be at the top of my list to slot in.

Thanks for noticing.

Not directly, sure. But I don't trust them to not try to get it put in.

I'm just wondering at this point how long that rule stays draft only.

Why would it not?

The whole problem with the partner mechanic is that it is necessary in draft, yet broken in constructed.  They're not making any more cards with partner.  (Although "partner with" is ok.)

It seems they stole this idea from Commander Cube.  This seems to be a popular house rule for Cubing Commander-style.

Well, shit. That's honestly pretty disappointing.

Honestly, I like the change.  If they just reprinted all the same partners as before, the this set would literally just be "more expensive Commander Legends".  This will allow the draft to play out much differently.

The Piper is in, so we know we're getting some Partners.

Prismatic Piper may be the only one.

It seems WotC is modifying the rules for Commander draft.  In a draft environment, every legendary creature that has a monocolor or colorless color identity is treated as if it has partner.

There could be other "partners" getting a reprint in the set.  It seems there won't be a lot of them.

General Magic / Re: How to make a better magic player
« on: July 06, 2023, 12:57:40 pm »
"I like Magic, but I am not having a good experience with Commander."  I could expand on this topic for quite some time.  As it mirrors my own journey with Magic, which began with Revised.  And with Commander, which began in 2011.  I'll leave you with this short version.  Feel free to follow up.

I have seen this several times throughout the years.  It usually boils down to a couple of factors.

The first is game play.  A typical game of Commander does not play out like a typical game of Sealed Deck at a prerelease.  You spend the first several turns just building your board state; not attacking.  I frequently see newer players spending their early turns applying pressure, only to run out of gas and get clobbered.  Every.  Single.  Time.

The other factor is deck construction.  Knowing that this is how Commander plays out, you need to build your deck accordingly.  Your early drops should be ramp and card draw.

Card selection plays into this a little bit too.  The specific cards you choose should match your style.  If aggro is your style, maybe use creature-based removal like Druid of Purification.  If sitting back and waiting until the last possible moment is your style, use instants like Naturalize.  Don't listen to what your friends say is a good card.  Play what works for you.

LOTR prerelease:

Built blue/red spellslinger

Won several games with a final Gandalf's Sanction.  "Trampling" at least 7 damage to my opponent each time.

Very satisfying wins.

(3-1 overall on the day, playing 42 cards in order to get critical mass of instants/sorceries while still having some creatures)
