I mean I think if he wants more utility he can go for using abrade, but if he wants more face cards I recommend rift bolt for the lower suspend cost. as for the abbot's The fact that is doesn't have haste makes it a worse play early when you still have cards in hand. I would consider Soul-Scar Mage and them maybe run 2 abbots for a mid game tempo boost. Other options could be running Grim lavamancer, and Eidolon of the Great Revel. Nothing is better than making you opponent take damage for trying to combo off. As for the deck as a whole I would seriously consider splashing white is you're not set on the whole Mono Red Deck. and try to fit in both lightning helix and boros charm as they are very powerful, not to mention it allows you to sideboard Path to Exile, which is arguably one of the best sideboard cards ever printed.
