Deck Reviews / Sealed deck feedback request
« on: April 29, 2013, 12:01:19 am »
SO I played a DM prerelease and I pulled the following:
deckstats.net/decks/3177/11892-dragon-s-...

Was an Orzhov deck with a Seleysnya kicker. I felt like there wasn't a ton of synergy in the card base and that for an Orzhov pack my extort options were limited.

What I ended up with was this:
deckstats.net/decks/3177/11893-dm-prerel...

I really debated spashing red over green to take advantage of the Viashinos and direct burn, but there seemed more utility in green, better curve oriented creatures too.

I went 1-2-2 with it. It seemed to be great at stalling but had no way to answer creature removal and seemed itself to run out of steam mid game.

I'm curious what others would have done? LMK

Dump green. You don't need it. You have creatures, but you're not an aggro deck. The idea isn't to clear the field, it's to get your people through to continue the cypher fed mill train.

Your win conditions lack focus, like I said. Distracted by green.

Too much redundancy and spread too thin. There are a heap of u/b creatures that are not only on curve, cost wise, but have the effects you're relying on other cards for built in, freeing up space for other stuff.

For example, Artful dodge, which I'm sure you'll want to throw on the Ooze or invisible stalker guy thing, becomes moot when you ditch the ooze but also replace him with something like Deathcult Rogue or a full playset of Tormented Soul. Consider Mind Sculpt as well.

Deathright shaman undermines you some. Consider using Duskmantle Guildmage instead. More bang for your buck.

I actually like the inclusion of Mortus Strider. I found that one of the problems this combo has is lack of recycle. If you come up against removal, it's hard to answer and hard to recover from.

Other things to look at:
Sleep
Blustersquall
Jace's Phantasm
Grisly Spectacle

Extort is brutal, and triggers constantly.

Ditch the idea of the guilds as themes to the deck (unless you're going for a casual format thing), otherwise you'll end up going in too many directions and bloating your deck. Detain is an awesome mechanic, for example, but it doesn't synergise that well with a Dimir/Orzohz deck. As support to a control suite, however, it fits perfectly. Think about it in terms of how it fits what you want to do in terms of your overall goal, and your build will remain much more focused.

Depending on how much you want to dump on this, don't underestimate keystones and the new cluestones. Both can serve alternate purposes once your mana base is stable.
