eh, tokens, 1-drops, whatever. Once their board is cleared just keep swinging with everything. I mean, even if you lose all your creatures, you'll just bring them all back with Immortal Servitude since they all cost the same. The Champion of the Parish is the big stick if you don't swarm them.

The problem with Mind Rot is that it is too expensive to too little effect. If i was going to go with a Modern 2 discard spell, i would go with Wrench Mind. But the point of the spell discard in this deck is to remove early threats, and anything that costs 2+ is to set up for the discard engine or to remove threats that have hit the board already.

Yeah, that actually became a big part of why i recently won my first game against a burn deck. I hit so many of his spells and creatures with Surgical Extraction effects that he ended up getting mana flooded. It can also work the opposite way. If you use those same effects on discarded shock lands and the like, most of the Tier 1 decks only really have 3-4 types of usable lands, most all of the others are fetch lands and 2-3 basics. With the Smallpox effect forcing land sacs, you can mana screw them as well (this only works on non-basic lands though, but it was the reason i decided to make a deck around these cards, they can be really devastating)

Also, what do you mean by the land to spell ratio is off? i only 20 lands in a deck that tops out at 3 cmc (ignoring the Tombstalkers because of Delve), and i lose a land every time i use smallpox.

Actually, i used to have Sadistic Sacrament in there. It worked really well against other control and combo decks, but was extremely underwhelming against aggro. I could use it both to remove singleton win-cons, cards that were a huge threat that they hadn't drawn yet, and to fetch 3 of the Eternal Scourges. But it is way too slow against aggro decks. It could be a good sideboard option though. I think the Isochron Scepter is a better option though, as it can grab a kill spell, Funeral Charm, or Extirpate and Surgical Extraction

Yeah, Liliana of the Veil is just too expensive for me right now, especially with a deck i am just testing out. Once i get it up to snuff i might be willing to splurge on it a bit, but right now no. I think if i had the money i would go for the Phyrexian Obliterator option, that card would just be devastating, and since i am running all Swamps, its mana cost is just any 4 lands.

I've had ensnaring bridge suggested to me a lot, and i might go for it. drop all creatures, get some of those, Necrogen Mists, and The Rack or Quest for the Nihil Stone. Or maybe just main board all my mass wipes

I think for right now i'll try the Tombstalker of the swords, drop the other creatures, and go for more control. I need a replacement for the Dark Confidant though, because the deck now has 0 means of draw aside from top decking.

The problem i have had with specters (all of them) in the past is that they are all really fragile, but i do have a 4 pack of Hypnotic Specter, Shimian Specter, and Guul Draz Specter. I like the pump effect of the Guul Draz, it makes my discards useful late game. Since i have them, i might as well try all of them out.

I really like your suggestion of Tombstalker, it has huge synergies with this deck and would be a pretty east turn 3-4 play

Thanks again for all the feedback and suggestions =)

I would highly suggest adding some Workshop Assistant to the board, i think 3 would be the minimum to make them relevant. Mainly because you can use them for the second effect of metalwork colossus, and they can bring themselves back endlessly if you sac both at the same time (might be wrong about that) or if you have 1 in the grave.

Oooh, i see your argument. Your suggesting that i should drop the gatekeepers and probably the stranglers and swords, go for more control cards and 2-3 real single play threats, creatures that are out of bolt range or a planeswalker or something, right? such as...
Abyssal Persecutor (which i later sac to my own smallpox or something)
Ashling, the extinguisher
Batterskull
Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
Phyrexian Obliterator
Sangromancer
Vampire Nocturnus

Am i understanding your argument correctly? And do you have any other suggestions for bomb threats in mono-black? I think 5cmc is kind of tops, with the smallpox killing my land drops too

Thanks for the comment crimsonking  :)

So, first off, this is a Modern Format deck, so Dark Ritual and Hymn to Tourach are not legal, as much as i wish they were. So Wrench Mind seems to be my best 2 mana discard option, but i would side it out against Affinity.

As for Grasp of Darkness, I agree, there are better options, and right now i am just testing the deck with them as a slot for an instant speed targeted kill spell, as they can kill the vast mojority of threats in my format. I will probably buy some Doom Blade, Go for the Throat, and Smother though, as they might be more reliable for targeted spells. Geth's Verdict is a really good sideboard suggestion for dealing with Bogle decks though =)

The Gatekeeper of Malakir body is not irrelevant as it either gives me a blocker, an attacker to put my opponent on a clock, or an equip target for the swords. I would probably agree that that part was irrelevant though if i reconsidered having the swords in there all together, which has been suggested and i am not ruling out. But, at that point, i would probably just run mass removal like Infest at 3cmc and Damnation mainboard and just make sure nothing is ever on the field at all. As long as i am running creatures at all, getting a 2/2 body along with a Cruel Edict effect is relevant.

The Syphon Life is in there to help offset running up against burn decks, but i have found it inadequate and will drop it. I need to add Sun Droplet, Dragon's Claw, or Golden Urn to the sideboard and just keep all those effects in the sideboard and out of the main deck.

The mill effect from horrifying revelation is very relevant in this deck, as it gives you another target for Surgical Extraction and Extirpate. I have hit a ton of key cards with that added effect. I actually hit an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn with the mill effect and hit it with a Surgical Extraction when its last ability was on the stack. After that the Nahiri deck fell apart. I have considered Funeral Charm though, in addition to Isochron Scepter, an the +2/-1 ability is not irrelevant, as i can pop enemy Dark Confidant, Activated Inkmoth Nexus, Blinkmoth Nexus, most creatures in Affinity actually, Snapcaster Mage, etc. I will definitely consider switching those out, thanks =)

Dark Confidant just gives so much card advantage that it is hard not to use him in any black deck in Modern. He also gives another body for a sword equip, which again, is relevant unless i drop them.

Eternal Scourge is actually great in this deck. 1. It keeps coming back from targeted removal, and gives you a really sturdy body for a sword. 2. It is great discard fodder for Smallpox and it is fine to sac as well if he is on the board because... 3. you can remove him from your own graveyard with Surgical Extraction and Extirpate, not only getting the 1 in the graveyard, but all copies from your deck. So a Smallpox and a Surgical Extraction turn into a tutor effect that gets you 4 3/3's that you have in an untargetable bonus hand outside the game. So i think they work pretty well.

Wasteland Strangler is also not random, as it gives roughly the same effect as the Gatekeeper of Malakir. A body + a kill spell. Yes, there is a caveat there with the "return from exile to opponents graveyard" bit, but i think that that has only stopped that ability going through in about 1 in 100 playtests. It is almost irrelevant with the 8 extirpate effects in the deck. And playing just 1 of those will give you ammo for all 3 of the stranglers on average.

Thanks for the critique, you had a lot of good reasons behind your arguments and you have given me a lot to think about

Yeah, as you can see from the FNM results, aggro decks are really tough for me to deal with right now. I think it will do much better now that i have some mass wipes and a sword that gives pro-green, but i actually did pretty well against Jund. The all-in aggro decks like affinity and elves and stuff just dropped way too may creatures on the board for me to keep up with. I would basically play out game 1 for as long as i can to see what they've got, then board in all of my creature kill over my discard. I really like the Isochron+ Funeral charm idea, and i could easily drop the revelations for those and drop a land or 2 for the scepters. The Rack is also a good suggestion, but if i went that way i think i'd drop all the creatures except for Bob and go for more creature kill and discard, maybe Necrogen Mists.

I'll add them to the Maybeboard =) Thanks for the suggestions

Order of the Stars and Forbidden Orchard. The Order is just generally awesome as a defender and the Forbidden's will either encourage opponents to attack or if they have a creature-less deck, gives them something to attack with. Wall of Omens would be a good add too.

The difficulty with any defender deck i've tried is getting your opponents to attack your blockade of walls to trigger effects like Souls of the Faultless and Perimeter Captain. The Sanguine Bond and Assault formation are good win-cons, you should add a Doran, the Siege tower too.

If you splashed red, Rage Nimbus would be a good way to force an attach, but 4 colors is always really tough to pull off.

Yeah, a singlton planeswalker could be a good added win-con. A late game planeswalker play could save a game.

Look into the utility of Immortal Servitude and Return to the Ranks, possibly Well of Lost Dreams as well. The well cost a little extra but you should be able to trigger it often enough on your opponents turn and refill your hand, and it being a artifact it is a little more sturdy than the creature and it is also out of Abrupt Decay range.

Also, wispmare for anti-enchantment and shriekmaw for some more creature removal that plays well into your blood artist and zulaport cutthroat combo.
