Deck Reviews / Re: [Standard] Abzan Riches

I played around with the hand sims for a bit. I think the first and biggest problem I see is in the mana base. I know Memorial To Glory can be sacked to spawn tokens but it slows things down so much. I'd personally drop two of them at least and increase the number of Sunpetal Groves and Isolated Chapels specifically. That Centaur and March are hard to play without double-white mana and waiting on Memorial to untap is likely to cost you the game.

The second thing is that it may do well to look carefully at the early game, as that seems to be a weakness. It looks like the basic strategy here is going to end up being to weather the first three turns and then cast Ritual of Soot and try to stabilize after the fact. A lot of the general meta seems to be White or Red aggro, Mono-Blue Tempo... All fast decks that you have some answers for but I feel like you'll get overrun most times. Which is why I say it looks like this will end up the strategy since it's definitely not what you're trying to do. It also feels a little heavy on the four drops.

If there's anything I could suggest, it would be to drop a Revel or two and at least one Plunderer as well as Conclave Cavelier all together. Add a Ritual of Soot and see if you can work in Legion's Landing. The token it spawns is a turn one lifelinker and it flips later to become a token spawning land. It also may help to have another cheap pirate for the early game to synergize with Fathom Flert Captain. Dire Fleet Poisoner could be a good choice, or Grasping Scoundrel, but I almost thing Dire Fleet Hoarder would work best in this particular deck. These are just thoughts though, that I hope are in line with the strategy you're trying to make work. An alternative is to just go a more control-based route of running a lot of hand-hate and removal to disrupt the opponent's game plan in preparation of dropping your win conditions.

My little brother saw this and wanted to build it.

One thought, why not drop a couple of the Inspiring Roar for a play set of Oath of Ajani? It's the same effect but much cheaper. It could help bring your mana requirements down. Just a thought, unless I'm missing something.

Using board wipes as a part of the strategy...it's been awhile since I've seen something like this for Standard. I like it. Have you played it? How's it fair in playtesting or games?

No doubt about leaving yourself defenseless, but isn't so much of brewing finding ways around weaknesses to abuse strengths? I watched a guy play a control deck a little bit ago that was built around Ghirapur Orrey and Gitrog Monsters. I don't know who beat him finally but once that went off he just dominated the poor guy I watched him play. Point is: he built the deck to abuse those strengths. If it works to give those exert creatures vigilance then Always Watching will do the trick. Blessed Alliance comes to mind as well. It may even be best to build exert in U/R or Jeskai. I think there's a lot of potential there and blue and white are great at suppressing the other guy's board while red goes all in.

And by all means, leave a link to that R/G deck. I'd like to see what you come up with. I may throw one together as well.

Honestly, I think Mardu Vehicles is going to continue to be a severe pain. Especially if players implement some of those blasted exert creatures into the deck. As far as new decks though... Hapatra does show a lot of promise really, as do the two new zombie builds. I'd seen good zombie builds before this set and would not be surprised at these additions really pushing them over the top. I personally really like B/W aristocrats though, built around Bontu. I also can't help but feel there is a very strong R/G aggro deck just waiting to be built. All that said though, I have to believe that R/W exert is going to be the big thing though. At least from what I've experienced. I was trashed pretty hard by Glorybringers at Pre-release. Card is savage.

Also, I want to see someone actually try Gideon tribal... For real.

Ha! Agreed on the Bant Company thing. If there is one reason to be happy with the pending rotation, I think, it's seeing that build go away. So sick of CoCo... I've only ever lost to the build once, but I'm still sick of seeing it.

Anyways, I like the thoughts here. Tenacity is one I was considering for the sideboard, as well as Grotesque Mutation. I was also debating picking up another Brutality or two as it is a versatile card. Admittedly I missed Alliance and Linvala. Whenever I begin playtesting I will have to try it with those two in it.

I was looking to build this and use it post-rotation, but wanted to hear thoughts and opinions on it first. I'm not 100% sure about it so I'm open to making changes. That said though, I do play budget. So for as good as Ishkanah and Lily are...they probably won't be happening..

Avaricious Dragon. It was the first truly double-edged(madness wasn't quite a thing yet) card I found that I wanted to build a deck around. Since then I've become a huge fan of Master of the Feasts, Abyssal Persecutor, Desecration Demon, Sire of Insanity.. Sin Prodder.. powerful cards that fuck with everyone, except YOU planned for it :)

Ha! Yes! These are all wonderful and terrible things.

Confusion looks like it would be a lot of fun to play with. Even in multiplayer.

Also, to ladof, Ajani is a great card. My main deck is an Abzan and I've always wanted him in it. I got to borrow him once from a friend and use him in it, and it was wonderful.

I like that you worked in Talent. I feel the card can be quite the powerhouse under the right circumstances (like in a deck like this) and it gets overlooked a lot at this point.

I actually built a deck with the same premise as your original build, the other day. Admittedly though, I feel yours may be a little more competitive than the one I built. The only thought I have is to essentially add an additional vote to dropping in the Void Winnower. The card's ability breaks the game for your opponent and demolishes a vast array of strategies. Tokens, white weeny, Collected Company, dragons and even a lot of control is effectively brought to a screeching halt due to their spell's even converted mana costs. I play one in an Eldrazi deck I built and it both shuts down and wins a lot of games. If I was to suggest a card to drop for it, I would suggest Kozilek as though a great card and a great bomb it's effect is lacking if not cast. Just my thought though. The deck looks really good either way.

General Magic / Re: Favorite 2 or 3 Card Combos
« on: June 18, 2016, 01:30:42 am »
I'm a simple man. I like to combine a Managorger Hydra and/or a Sunscorch Regent alongside at least one Enduring Scalelord. I also like the combination of a Cunning Breezedancer with Great Teacher's Decree. Also, a Ruthless Deathfang alongside From Beyond and a Zulaport Cutthroat or two. Just some of my most favored combos that I play.

General Magic / Favorite Cards

So, something I've been wondering about amongst the community here, is just the question of favorite cards. I think we all have them. Occasionally building decks around them or throwing them into decks whenever we can. Not combos per sé or anything like that, but more the ones you like best or have used the most. Sometimes it's a card or cards that have an effect you just end up loving or maybe it's one of those ones that ends up growing on you because it pops up a lot in a deck you play and wins you games. Maybe it's nothing like that and you just really like the art or something. Either way, I thought I'd ask and see. What are some of your favorite cards? And if you care to share, why?

Three of my personal favorites are the Managorger Hydra, Dragonlord Dromoka and (of course) the Acid-spewer Dragon. The Hydra is a beast of a card that has been a workhorse for me whenever I've run them. Dromoka shuts down a lot of control strategies, which I really appreciate as control games can become a bit tedious. And the Acid-spewer has effectively been my card since the very first game of Magic I played. I won with it then and have won many games since with this card being central to that. Either beefing up other dragons at the right time, drawing removal, death-touching something obnoxious, or just beating down the other guy...among many other things.
