Mardu Mentor

I love dreadhorde arcanist and monastery mentor and they kinda work together well. Thoughts?

mardu kroxa

Modern Kroxa hand hate. Splashed white for path and lingering souls. seemed like a small concession in mana for best removal in the format

Deflecting Swat is a solid 'oops, it's my spell now' card. Also, I'd run something like Thassa, Deep Dwelling so you can flicker cards like Agent of Treachery and Gonti, Lord of Luxury. Plus she's a pain to remove, so does some good work on her own.

General Magic / Re: What could a new viable cycle of Lands look like?
« on: June 23, 2020, 12:27:25 am »
Let's see them finish the cycles they've already started. The rest of the battle lands would be nice, the rest of the canopy lands, while I don't care for them, would be useful. The other half of the triome lands would be fantastic, as would the other five BBD lands. There are a bunch of solid land cycles they've just never gotten around to finishing that I'd love to see completed.

There are too many factors that go into these games to have an episode like this, imo.

How many times on average is a commander cast? I dunno, how many times was it removed? If I cast it once and it never left the battlefield, that might skew my numbers a bit, especially if I have a commander-centric deck.

How many 7+ cmc cards were cast? I'm sure red decks cast considerably fewer than green decks. You can build decks that abuse expensive cards or ignore them.

How many times do players attack? They kind of addressed this, it depends on what the deck wants to do. I've lost games where the winner never attacked (thanks proliferate and poison). I've lost games where the t2 'send the elf, show him you mean business' mattered.

How many board wipes per game? This made me laugh. I had just finished a game where I cast the same board wipe three times in 5 turns and they're saying less than 2. Please.

Overall, these are the kinds of episodes that make me despise pod casters. They want to act like experts or analysts but fail to recognize several key items that would skew their data. Play what you want, don't listen to the 'experts'. It's a game. Have fun.

Went 3-1 last night before these changes. Realized I never wanted to draw cryptbreaker and blood fast, but having a ballista for some late game reach might be a good idea.

Revision 6

Added/removed cards:
-1 Arguel's Blood Fast
-1 Cryptbreaker
+2 Walking Ballista

Deck Reviews / Re: [Pioneer] Teferi Control (Esper)

I would consider adding a torrential gearhulk or two. mana shouldn't be the issue and gearhulk puts a much faster clock on the board than 'tuck teferi'.

I think they're fine. A lot of even the uncommons are playable in certain situations but not to be overpowering. Narset being the best uncommon for most formats is pretty clear, imo.

What I find curious about your initial statement is that you compared the uncommon walkers to uncommons of other sets, saying only narset is worth a couple bucks, with Ashiok and Saheeli being worth a buck, then mentioned, Fatal Push, Curious Obsession and Light up the Stage. Why I find that curious is that you listed three uncommons from WAR worth over a dollar, but only one from each of Aether Revolt, Ixalan and one of the Ravs (I always get them mixed up in my head). Usually a set might have one uncommon worth anything while it's in standard, and if it stays up its a really good uncommon (looking at you, fatal push). This set currently has three planeswalkers at uncommon worth more than a dollar and I can think of one more that will be there (Liliana's Triumph - who doesn't like Diabolic Edict?) So potentially 4, and all 4 of those I can see retaining that roughly dollar to three dollar value even post rotation, since Narset is basically a god in all formats, saheeli has places and mill is fun to some people (and again, who doesn't like Diabolic Edict, now available in modern!) So yes, I feel like WotC did a good job with these walkers. They're unique, they, in general, fit the power level of their respective rarities and they have decent value (I actually expect a handful of the rare walkers to go up significantly in price as the years progress. They're good, but it's too early and the set was so heavily opened at the start that prices are low as people try to recoup their investment.)
