Definitely an issue I'm aware of, hence why I'm looking for a line to casting him without dying. Maybe Temur Ramp actually would be better because it would leave the combo playable  (and Amulet playable on turn 3) while still having a board presence and some fat Green creatures as alternate finishers. Just looking to explore whether this control shell can be improved first

Deck: Locust Swarm

I love the Locust God and would like to use it in Standard. Control may not be the only way to enable him, but the best way to use him I think is to explode out a huge swarm to guarantee a kill in 1-2 turns. This requires playing some expensive spells, and so I turned to control as the best method. Going Temur Ramp is another option but I'm not sure it's doable without getting run over by Longtusk Cubs and Bristling Hydras. I have a very competitive FNM and would like to at least nab 2-1's semi-consistently.

One of the central weaknesses of the deck is that Locust God is the only win condition and until I get him out I'm just playing a gimped form of UR control. I'm looking for ways to shore this up or change the style to make the deck more consistent so I can survive and hit the Locust God + Primal Amulet + Commit // Memory combo.

Here are some notes on choices and strategies (copied from deck deck description on the site):
  • Mainboard is tuned for Temur Energy game 1.
  • Metallic Mimic, name insects. 28 flying power on the board.
  • Star of Extinction really only costs 6 with Primal Amulet, breaks the board state of Temur Energy no matter how many counters they put on Bristling Hydra or Longtusk Cub. Be careful using it game 2 if they have mana up as they will likely have Negate.
  • Scarab God package is in the side because I own one and it's good, etc. Also it gives you something to put on board if they are likely to Ixalan's Binding your Locust God (;_;) If you tapped out and they Ixalan's Binding you, your only chance otherwise is to cast Commit.
  • If you copy Memory, it goes on the stack twice. If you have open mana, be sure to Shock and Opt from your refilled hand before the second trigger goes off for free damage or extra locusts.
