General Magic / Re: Good cameras/stands for webcam mtg?
« on: February 21, 2024, 10:42:50 am »
On a windows computer you can use your phone as a webcam via an app like Iriun. I have used it during quarantine. And it worked well. Most phones have quite good camera's, so it's worth a try.

If you have access to a webcam (or you can use your phone as a webcam, on windows it's possible with an app called Iriun) you can play with paper cards via: https://spelltable.wizards.com/. I have used it during quarantine and I it worked very well.

Deck Reviews / Re: [Standard] Hydra
« on: November 16, 2023, 11:30:56 am »
I don't think that cards from the commander decks that are not in the main set are standaard legal. Scryfall.com has It marked as not legal. You can check by searching cards on that site.

Most of the hydra's are not standard legal as wel. If you use the Advanced Search methode you can search for all hydra's that are legal in standard. Maybe you can make it an Explorer or Historic deck.

And for a +1/+1 counter deck in standard you can look at Simic for all kinds of proliferate and ozolith, the shattered spire. I have one andit'sgood enough for reaching gold on the ladder in Arena (bo1).

Looks like a fun deck to play. And I always like other people playing monowhite!

I have a few suggestions for cards to add. Tocasia's Welcome is great carddraw in a deck that makes tokens, especially if they can do so on opponent's turns.

You can make use of your tokens better if you can decide how your opponent has to block with Odric, master tacticion or if your creatures have haste with Crashing Drawbridge. Both can be (part of) your wincon.

And I also support the forementioned Knight-Captain of eos. That card is way better than it looks, especially if you can keep it safe from removal like in your deck.

Another way to learn the game is playing

Arena online. You can play a diversity of formats, but the main thing is that you can practise your timing very well, the game simply don't let you play things you aren't allowed to. And it's a way to play multiple games fast.

I know it can be hard to get a gew decks to play on the ladder, but events with 'precons' or jumpstart are easy to start with.

And another way to get to know is playing 1vs1 as suggested by others. Playing precons (preferably frontera the same set) against each other can help levelling the decks against each other and it helps finding a deck/playstyle that suits your wife.

Commander Deck Reviews / Re: Giada Lifegain tribal - Need a few cuts
« on: July 05, 2023, 07:34:23 pm »
I'm considering building a Giada deck as well (in stead of my Linvala angel deck: https://deckstats.net/decks/104951/2447066-linvalas-flying-friends#show__spoiler). I don't have the more expensive angels so I would take a slightly different take on angel-tribal. I would focus more on the cheap (in mana-cost) angels and less on the big ones. And without a pearl medallion I use Oketra's monument. It's one mana more and only for creatures, but because I will be playing a creature heavy deck it's quite good (and the card is less expensive in €'s). And the it gives out 1/1 warrior tokens on top of the manadiscount. And it also triggers my Tocasia's Welcome. That's another card I would recommend. It triggers of all tokens each turn (The book of exalted deed, Valkyrie Harbinger). A bigger angel I would recommend is Emeria Shepherd, it works great with landtax and uses the recursion from white.

And for your cuts you could look at the cards that aren't angels. You have lots of cards that give lifelink to your creatures. Many angels have lifelink already or give life for playing angels (Bishop of Wings, Lyra Dawnbringer, Rightous Valkyrie), so you don't need Abzan Battlepriest, Heliod and such. The same goes for the planeswalkers, they can make angels, but you have better ways to do that (The Book of Exalted deeds, Valkyrie Harbinger).

And you could consider cutting the 'stax and tax' pieces. You could beat face with big flying angels and gain life in the proces, i don't know your meta, but is it really that necessary to prevent your opponent from attacking you if you gain enough life to live trough that. Especially when playing 1vs1 commander.

Commander Discussion / Re: Mostly one-sided boardwipes
« on: December 06, 2022, 07:26:13 am »
I like Single Combat for a (kind of) one-sided boardwipe if i'm playing voltron. It's also ideal if you're playing a lot against decks with many indestructible creatures, because the creatures have to be sacrificed. And i like Slaughter the Strong as well, it's als not exactly one-sided, but in the right deck (low power commander) it can be very good. It's very nice in Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle decks.

The problem with almost all of these as wipes is that they're a bit situational or conditional. By running these, you're almost being a bit greedy, gambling on not needing a different/better/more thorough wipe in the hopes of retaining some value yourself - which isn't why one plays wipes in the first place. Personally, I'd aim always to run at least one real wipe, ideally something that gets around indestructible or is Supreme Verdict, but perhaps run some of these too, and perhaps more wipes overall since I'm less likely to be completely wiping myself.

If it's possible to play a boardwipe that situational or conditional as you describe them, I like to do that. It's not just for the wipe, it's a piece to get in a much better position for the win. The way you describe a boardwipe is more preferable in a situation to prevent you from losing. So if you have deck that can profit from a 'precision boardwipe' i would prefer those, to prevent from wiping yourself like you say.

I think I would bring my Kethis Elf tribal deck. It's quite a different take for Kethis and while I'm not the only one that has made an elf tribal Kethis deck it's fun to play a lot of legenday elves (both literally and as a figure of speech, because for me Imperious Perfect is a favorite card that got me hooked on tribal decks).

While it's not the typical fast mana deck it's fun and can be strong in the late game, because it has a recursion package that no deck of mine has.

It's also one of my only decks that has quite a lot of expensive cards in it (for me that is at least)

Here is the deck: https://deckstats.net/decks/104951/1340073-commander-kethis-elvish-legend

Looks like a fun deck to play. A card I loved in my sokdier deck was Knight-captain of eos..... Having a fog ready all the time gets really annoying for your opponents at the end.

I already have this deck:

https://deckstats.net/decks/132604/2458875-aristo-cats-and-dogs

I'm planning on getting Jinnie Fay, Jetmir's Second so I can make ANOTHER deck that focuses on killing cats and dogs for profit.

Making an aristocats deck without the payoffs available in black will be tricky, so this one will be more of a combo based deck.

Thornbite staff on anything that taps to make a token, with blasting station and/or goblin bombardment to kill people.

Might even stick in an overrun, as a treat.

Bootlegger's stash would be superb in that deck, but I won't be going out of my way to get one. If I open one on draft night, great, but it's not a card that interests me particularly.

Things like impact tremors and heat of battle would do nicely in a red inclusive token deck as well.

I'm more of a budget player. So I have bought one card that's over € 1,- and that's Giada, font of hope, because I like angels ;).
And I bought a Reservoir Kraken, undercover operative, errant, street artist for rares.

Mage's attendant is for my Linvala, Shield of Sea gate deck as it makes two party members in one play. Rumor gatherer is nice for budget creature decks. And I picked up Inspiring overseer for my Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle deck, as it is a very good reanimation target.

I hope white will be getting more recursion, be it for (small) creatures, enchantments or artifacts. It fits it's identity and helps get the value pieces like esper sentinel, anointed procession and such back again.

But I like the way white is going right now. But they also have to stop making treasure cards for green, otherwise white & red (and even blue and black) will always stay farther behind.

Looks like a fun deck to play.

I would like to suggest to replace resistance squad with Augur of Autumn. Although it isn't a real draw it can help speed up, you can play lands from the top of the library, and you'll have a decent chance that you can play creatures from there as well. I have managed to play three cards from the top more than once. And it isn't a one time draw.

Another card that would fit the theme of humans and angels is Sigarda's Summons. It gives al your creatures with counters flying and most of the creatures also get a boost. It could replace enduring scalelord as both have the same mana value.

Looks like a fun deck to play (against). I think it is quite good, my first decks weren't this kind of good. But one of my first decks that I enjoyed playing was an abzan +1/+1 counters deck in Abzan colors like this one. Daghatar the adamant was my commander. I think it would fit in your deck as well, because you can move counters around, and trigger things with that ability.

Herd Baloth would be good to add for sure in that case as well. It goes infinite with Cathar's crusade or (if you put it in the deck too) Ivy lane denizen. Even without the combo it would be nice in you deck as well. As for the 2 Ajani's I'm not sure. I tried them in my +1/+1 elf and counters deck, but they are not that good when playing them. I think Vraska from you maybeboard would be a better fit, because of the option to use it as removal. You have a lot of counter makers already, so you don't have to use Ajani for it.

And I don't know if it will fit your budget, but The Ozolith is very strong in decks with counters in them.

I would like to see a decklist when you're (nearly) finished. I think I want a deck like this too ;).
