Hi dear fellow goblin,

Glad to see some are still interested playing the deck. You belong to the resistance trying to keep Death Rite Shaman in check throwing stones at him. Be proud of it!

I had a look on your list and it looks good. I wouldn't run this sideboard, but that's not your question.

Goblin Tinkerer is very good in Vintage, but he is sadly a bad choice in Legacy. He can shatter any Mox, Lotus Petal, Null Rod or Black Lotus without taking any damages. In Legacy, artifacts that really hurt goblins are Jitte, Batterskull or Sword of "anything". Their CMC are all 2 or more and it kills Goblin Tinkerer. Hence, there are 3 prerequisites for Tinkerer to be active:

  • having 1 red mana open
  • having haste OR
  • survive the next turn to activate his ability

If there is Chieftain in play, you will shatter only Jitte, not the others, otherwise, Tinkerer dies. That's not very efficient for 3 manas. For 1 more, you get Tuktuk, with is considered garbage, because he is so expansive. But hey, we are goblins and can't ask Wizards too much.

In comparison, TSH or Tuktuk have a multitude of pros:

  • their ETB effect if immediate,
  • they don't die after the job is done, they strengthen you team, one more goblin is still important in a grindy meta.
  • they strengthen your team. One more goblin is still important in a grindy meta.

There is even a well-known trick with 2 Tuktuks. You surely already know it. If a 2nd Tuktuk enters the battlefield, while the 1st one is still online, 1st Tuktuk triggered ability activates again. That's 2 artifacts to shatter. Same goes for the damages. Once the 2nd Tuktuk comes, they are 2 allies and each one of them deals 2 damages to opponent's face, namely 4 damages this turn.

Unfortunately, most of the time, Tuktuk CMC is a lot of mana to pay and that's why I splash green for Tin Street. With 4 mana, we can cast Tin Street to stop a Jitte bleeding and still cast a Piledriver to put pressure, or a Mogg War Marshal to block a Gurmag or enable a Gempalm for Delver or DRS. But having 1 taiga needs to fetch at the right moment and sequence our mana accordingly. Otherwise we are punished by Stifle, Wasteland or Back to basics.

Another reason why I run TSH over Tuktuk is that sometimes, his low CMC helps to shatter a Chrome Mox in Reanimator/Storm MUs in T2. Keeping their mana low is very relevant if we don't have any disruption or graveyard hate in the early turns.

For other discussions, I suggest you to join the MTGTheSource forum. There is goblin group. I have the same alias.

I hope to see you in a tournament one day.

Keep throwing stones,
