Deck Comments / Re: Mono Black Vampire - Comments
« on: October 16, 2020, 02:36:00 pm »
thanks to all for the feeback
i played vampire a lot (really a lot ) and this is what i have learned and i m glad to share with you

1) 6-8 1 cmc creatures drops is great ,we have always something to do on the first turn and we don't lose tempo/mana.
Vampire of the dire moon is a awesome card on early/mid game vs fast aggro deck
knight of the ebon legion is a really threats on the mid late game

2)we are a creature deck so we win with creatures, not with spells, and in mainboard we only need 4 spells aka fatal push ( better black removal )

3)vial is a really bad topdeck but on tun 1 can give us a lot of strong play, allow us to play creatures at instant speed, and allow us to keep hand with a low number of lands

4) i tried orzhov and rakdos variants of vampires ( with legion lieutenant and stromkirk captain ) but the mono black version is more solid

5) some creatures are a must x4 on each vampire deck: cordial vampire / 6-8 1cmc ( i think the better optin are Vampire of the dire moon and knight of the ebon legion )
dusk legion zeloat and a final treaths vampire nocturnus or nighthawck scavenger

6) sorin is a great pw but he do nothing on an empty board/hand so i think x3 is a reasonable choise

7) chapter bloodghast:
i know a lot consider he a super strong vampire, but after a lot of  tries i drop him out of the deck and i have never been so happy, bloodghast is useless against aggro/fast deck and aginst midrange is true i can come back but is just a 2/1 and he can't block (big drawback).
i konw there is a good combo with the new sorin but we can still just sacrifice other vampires if we need

8) lately i have tried nighthawck scavenger instead of vampire nocturnus and the results are mediocre sometimes id good sometimes i wish i have a big bomb in hand like nocturnus instead of him

9) if we dont' play with gatekeeper of malakir mutavault are ok (x2) other creaturea are flex spots

10) 20/21 lands are ok with nocturnus maybe 21

2
Deafening Silence is strong against combo deck for sure but maybe not against U control or R burn/prowess deck
for control we need more creatures and/or discarding cards like inquisition of kozilek or Thoughtseize ( remove from deck fatal push )
Against red deck wins we have already a good match up due lifelink creatures we have and sorin ability, maybe we can put on the sideboard more lifelink creatures but i think that with discarding cards we are ok
against midrange deck, grind match up we need cards like gatekeeper of malakir to kill creatures and kalastria highborn to gain advantage over the time imho
against combo maybe Deafening Silence is not the best solution, maybe collective brutality,Surgical Extraction
against tron deck and other combo Ashiok, Dream Render

note: i didn't make already a sideboard list, so those cards are just idea

Ok , sorry for the delay, i had some issue those days.

On the deck , ok i admit now i'm quite sold on Vampire nocturnus, sometimes is awful, true, because he die without give any advantage BUT when the card on top is black is something crazy, he broke the field and with a bit of luck you can minimize the "non-black card on top" effect. to increase the chance to play nocturnus often i added a land (21 total now )

Bloodghast have a great synergy with stromkirk condemned  and Sorin and a part some situation where you need to block is great, i will test it more but for now it passed the first wall

stromkirk condemned : maybe the card that shined less, not bad but many times your hand is empty or you totally don't want to discard your precious card even for a trade on the battlefield ( if the opponent don' fall on your bluff ) so maybe at the beginning was overrated but is not that bad, discarding a bloodghast/ second aether vial / land in excess to give our creature a lord effect is very strong.

murderous rider: i will still try to use this card , 3 mana are a lot but destroy pw and creature at instant speed and then have a creature to cast is an huge bonus, maybe a cheaper removal would be better i don't know, for now i cut them to 2 ( maybe a collective brutality main? )

martyr of dusk: i cut them for 2 reason :1, is white and with vampire nocturnus in this deck want just black card (aether vial is an exception ) and 2; maybe is not strong enough, the 1/1 that comes after she dies is often a chump blocker and not a proactive creature

Mishra's Bauble.: i don't like cut some creature or removal to put card that dilute our creature tribal deck, how do you feel about this card?

4
Yes, we mostly agree on everything and that make me happy, i made some test and i'd like to show you my impression and change i wanna try on the main :

4 gifted aetherborn ---> 4 bloodghast ( or 4 other vampires )
Why?
I noticed that in my deck list there are 2 cards quite similar, one is gifted aetherborn and the other is vampire of the dire moon, what change from them is the mana cost and the power/toughness, eight of them are too many. I (we?) just need four of them  imho, and i prefer put in the deck a true alternative in the 2cmc shell instead of a replacement card i don't like on the 1 cmc . The bloodghast is a test maybe other cards feet better or maybe is just better change the 1 cmc , i don't know,is a guess here.i will test

2 captivating vampire ---> 2 stromkirk condemned
Why ?
They are essentially a 3 cmc lord with a bonus that triggers not very often, and  a 2 cmc lord when i discard a card ( or fake a discard ) on instant speed: again with the x4 bloodghast a great synergy, and only two because i don't want see too many of them ( in that case we should discard too many cards) , i noticed how can be strong the stromkirk condemned ability, if he get killed we can discard a card and for the current turn we have the lord bonus even he is not long on the battlefield, again with the discard ability he pump himself so is basically a 3/3 2 cmc, anyway  for my experience as long we have a card in and for the opponent is a lord.

2 captivating vampire ---> 2 murderous rider
Why?
One of the biggest problem i see on tribal deck is the time/fuel factor, i'll explain: a tribal deck need a critical mass or a really strong creatures combo to win a race against other meta deck, so what this deck need is a major versatility, we need spell to gain time and creatures to race( brazen borrower is an example on modern merfolk ) , cast a creature/spell and pass is not the way for winning a modern competitive match,we need creature that can race and do something to slow down the opponent,a card that is both even if not a vampire deserve a test imho , gatekeeper of malakir is unfortunately strictly worse; triple black , can't kill pw , you can't chose the target , sorcery speed, is a vampire but is not enough ( is a complicated speech, i hope i explained well :) )

4 mutavault ---> 3 mutavault 1 black/white source of mana
Why?
Mutavault is great, a land creature(vampire)! but in some games i found myself with 3 lands 2 mutavault or 4 lands 2 mutavault and i coudn't play creatures because our deck is focused on black/ white mana

4 Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord ---> 3 Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord and 1 creature card( i don't know which )
Why ?
Sorin is strong, is powerful but without creatures in an empty board/empty hand is just useless, so i prefer put more power/consistency on the other copies of sorin and add another utility creature

My change for the moment are those, i will try them and i will make you know what i think about them
What do you think about my change ?

On your comment:

1/2/3 cmc creatures spell : agree on everything you say. vampire hexmage is wonderful, captivating vampire is meh, and the protagonist of the deck  is cordial vampire.

4 cmc creatures spell : Vampire nocturnus is amazing when the card on top is black and if the ability triggered every time i put him on the battlefiled it would be x4 but the fact that sometimes is just a 3/3 ready to be bolted make me don't like him, okok i have fetchland(anyway the oppo can still kill him on the stack of fetch) to change the card on top but NOT in the same turn, for example turn 3 -> Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord : put in play vampire nocturnus -> flip a land, i have to wait the next turn to play the fatch in my hand... or maybe to crack the silent clearing, in both cases for an entire turn is a 3/3 that can be killed without bring any advantage.

1/2 mana spell like thoughtseize or inquisition of kozilek are great against some deck indeed i put them in the sideboard, in the MB there isn't enough room for those spell even in x2, we should have card (is an example, unfortunately is not a vampire) like tidehollow sculler , again, a creature / spell that put something on the battlefield and have interaction with opponent ; like murderous rider ( a time gaining )

I think i will play 4 aether vial , i want to maximize the probability to have one of them on my opening hand, the ability to play creatures at instant speed is amazing , and with the aether vial in excess i can discard them with stromkirk condemned.

Hi, i'm happy you appreciate my list !!
about your suggestion :

1 mana  drop:

Viscera Seer: yes 1/1 is terrible, with sac ability he can provide some scry bonus after block and engine cordial vampire ability of course but imho is not enough, the sac ability of sorin, our removal, opponent removal are already a good engine, otherwise you can argue:why you chose to play vampire of the dire moon?: is still a 1/1 yes but has deathtouch ( and lifelink ) and can trade with bigger creatures like eldrazi and goyf and the opponent have to deal with him.

2 mana drop:

Adanto Vanguard : i still think is not good enough for the deck, is true you can gain life but how many?, 4 life each activation are a lot. lose/lose situation imho are more common then you think but maybe i'm wrong. To answer your question, white mana for now is only for legion lieutenant and for martyr of dusk and maybe path over push but maybe is too much (in mainboard).
Cordial Vampire: is one of the best(if not the best ) vampire in the deck  and naturally is X4
Bloodghast: i don't know, as you say sometimes is awful sometimes is great, maybe with sorin and stromkirk condemned can be good.
Asylum visitor: would you play a 3/1 vanilla in your deck? his effect rarely trigger so is just a 3/1 ( and madness ok ) and in a modern format with lava dart / wrenn and six walking ballista plague engineer is not worth imho.
Cruel Celebrant and Blood Artist:ok good combo but i think an aggro version of the deck is still better, maybe kalastria highborn but maybe.
Legion Lieutenant: graet lord great card, the main reason i decided to splash white.
Vampire Hexmage:really hard to block and can kill planeswalker too!

3 mana drop :

Captivating Vampire:yes is good, but now after some test i start to doubt of his ability, yes it's a lord but for 3 mana, and his ability not often happens and when it do is a win/win situation most of the time ( you have 5 vampires)
Gatekeeper of Malakir: i tried and 3 black is REALLY pain!doesn't synergize with aether vial, i think even is not a vampire Murderous rider is just better ( and can kill planeswalker )
Stromkirk Captain: sure a strong strong lord even at 3 cmc but i don't think a mardu version is the way...
Drana, Liberator of Malakir: sound good but is not better than captivating vampire imho. yes 2/3 flying first attack but is not a lord until you attack with other creatures, and Drana have to make damage first

4 mana drop:

Even with Sorin i think they are too slow, maybe Elenda, the dusk rose : it still give us sometimes even if dies.
Vampire Nocturnus effect is amazing but if the card on top is not black (about 1/3 of the time) is just terrible and can be bolted
Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet:not bad but not good in an aggro deck

1/2 mana Spells:

everything you say is right but for the mainboard i think there are only room for x4 fatal push:

planeswalker:

liliana of the veil : one of the best pw, in the deck maybe a better gatekeeper of malakir but i don't like personally put too many pw and sorin here is a stable
Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord: just a vampire pw,perfect shell for him here

Lands:

Mutavault: maybe 4 are too many because this deck really need colored mana, i'm thinking about 3 of them
Fetchlands: i didn't put Bloodghst but if i change idea i will add at least a x4 of marsh flat
Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx: too slow, it shine only after the 3 land and we don't want more than 3/4 lands in a game, too slow
