A deck may not generate mana outside its colours. If an effect would generate mana of an illegal colour, it generates colourless mana instead.

This was actually changed after Oath of the Gatewatch, so that using the colorless mana eldrazi would be harder. Now you can generate every color of mana even if you play monocolored deck. But you still cannot use, say tranquil cove or talisman of progress, that specifies the mana it's making, having to rely on things like rupture spire or manalith that create any color.
