Deck Reviews / Re: Commander Deck theories
« on: November 14, 2016, 05:53:26 pm »
How I determine what deck I want to build is as follows: I either find a potential commander that I want to build around or I find an idea that I want to build around. The decks I have at the moment all started like that.
Meren of Clan Nel Toth, sacrifice graveyard value -> Started because I really liked Meren.
Thraximundar (soon to be Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder -> Started because I wanted a storm EDH deck.
Borborygmos Enraged -> Really liked the idea behind the commander. It's different from any deck I had and people at my local gamestore had.

So that's how I would pick your commander. Either find a strategy (good stuff, combo, control, aggro, value) or find a legendary creature that you really like. When you don't have many cards just do something like good stuff or control since those types of decks are easier to start off with in my experience.

Hope this helps!

Yidris, the MaelStorm Wielder

This is my Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder deck. It used to be Thraximundar however with green added to the mix, it should have less mana problems and it gains access to Abundance. Abundance is very good when comboing off. No more unneeded lands! It's very light on Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder enablers, just Whispersilk Cloak and Thassa, God of the Sea, but that's not the premise of the deck. However if you can get a hit in, it should be very good. Any suggestions are much appreciated

BorBor ThrowThrow

It's the deck where you throw everything you have at your opponents! Creatures, lands, Sorceries and Instants! Everything is there to protect Borborygmos, find lands, draw cards or is otherwise used as utility.

Advice is welcome, I used several other lists as inspiration :)

Drama, Liberator of Malakir is most likely the best creaturen in the deck. It's a card that can win the game on it's own if legt unchecked. Therefore the odds of it being removed are suite high. Therefore you want to have at least 1 every game and a backup isn't too bad either. That's why you want 3-4 imho.

You're talking about Scatter to the Winds in your deck desciption, yet I don't see it in the deck it self. It seems to me that this card is the best counterspell in Standard at the moment, so I would include it over either Clash of Wills and Horrible Awry.

If you ever dare to include green you could play more mana ramp/fixing('Battle' Lands, Fetches, Nissa, Vastwood Seer, Nissa's Renewal) and include sultai ascendancy, Bring to Light and Sultai Charm.]

The deck seems very sweet, however it might have trouble winning vs control (if they counter key cards, such as Necromantic Summons or a planeswalker). I would look into either being more resilient vs control or have a strong sideboard plan vs it.

Hello there!

The deck looks like a lot of fun to play!

However I have some questions:
1) Is the deck competitive? If so, how does it fair against the combo decks in legacy (OmniShow, Infect, Storm, the tempo decks like delver/pyromancer and the control decks like miracles?

2) Is this a budget deck? Because since this is legacy you can play original duals. Those make the mana much more smooth when combined with fetches. \
I always feel like the bounce lands are super feel bad in an aggro-ish deck. Wouldn't you want to fill the deck with either shocks, fetches, battle lands or duals?

3) Do you ever have removal problems? In legacy abrupt decay and swords to plowshares are prime removal.

4) Do you ever have speed problems? Some of the 5 drop slivers seem to slow in an aggro-ish deck. You could streamline the deck do be more aggro and less combo-y.

Either way I love the fact that you have build a deck that only has one of each card in it and that it's Slivers :D

You can always go to the site and use it that way. I did that myself and it worked great :)

I really think you want 4x Hardenend Scales. It's the engine of the deck and makes the deck go into overdrive when drawn in multiples. I like the argument for Sylvan Scrying, however I think 4 is too many since it doesn't ramp and the synergy is not high enough in the deck imho. The star creatures in the deck are Undergrowth Champion and Hangarback Walker, so in my opinion you want to play the full set of both.

Even though this is a creature deck at heart it only runs 16 creatures and the awaken cards don't come online till the late game. If you ever face an aggro deck you might be dead before this happens. Therefore I would advice to up the creature count. Avatar of the Resolute, Den Protector, Managorger Hydra, Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper, Oran-Rief Hydra, Skyrider Elf, Stratus Dancer, Tajuru Stalwart and Woodland Wanderer all come to mind.

Other cards you might want to include are: Dromoka's Command, Ojutai's Command and Sheer Drop.

If you add more white cards I would advice to change the amount of white producing cards.

Hopefully this helps!

Deck Reviews / [Standard] The Leap Sac Machine.

The Leap Sac Machine.

This is my twist on a sacrifice deck for standard. The deck is quite cheap and has a good amount of removal, card selection and card draw. The objective is to stall the game until a Zulaport Cutthroat has been found. Then you can combine Nantuko Husk  with Zulaport Cutthroat and finish the game. Another way is going wide with creatures and using Drana, Liberator of Malakir to race.

This is a brew so any advice is appreciated.

Deck: The Leap Sac Machine.

//Sacrifice Outlet
2 Evolutionary Leap
4 Nantuko Husk
2 Smothering Abomination

//Synergy
3 Catacomb Sifter
3 Drana, Liberator of Malakir
4 Liliana, Heretical Healer
4 Zulaport Cutthroat

//Fuel
4 Blisterpod
4 Hangarback Walker
4 Carrier Thrall

//Removal
3 Bone Splinters
1 Murderous Cut

//Mana
4 Llanowar Wastes
7 Forest
8 Swamp
2 Blighted Fen
1 Mortuary Mire

//Sideboard
2 Display of Dominance
2 Fleshbag Marauder
2 Crux of Fate
3 Despise
2 Highland Game
2 Jaddi Offshoot
2 Self-Inflicted Wound

As a way to mess with control decks (with fliers) you could always try display of dominance. Its great VS ojutai and great in the match up. I would advice to play Drana, Liberator of Malakir -> she's great VS aggro, pumps the team and is yet another ally. Beastcaller Savant seems poor in the deck. You 'ramp' from 2 to 3 and your curve ends at 3 (as far as creatures are concerned). I would look into replacing it.

I'm wondering how many times the swords are going to be enough value. You don't run that many creatures and you're bound to getting two for oned when they remove in response to the equip. I think murder should be hero's downfall since it hits planeswalkers and creatures.

I would advice playing Darksteel Forge since it wins the game when played next to mycosynth lattice and nevinyrral's disk.

Render Silent is a great counterspell

You could look into including Collected Company even though it's not that budget friendly it's a beast in the deck (31 creatures and all 3 mana or lower).

I don't know if you are willing to add black? If you do you can add Drana, Liberator of Malakir who is great on her own and awesome with hardend scales. Abzan Ascendency, Abzan Charm, Anafenza the Foremost, Ruinous Path, Warden of the First Tree. Woodland Wanderer. For the sideboard Hooded Hydra is awesome vs Control and I would up the count of Dragonlord Dromoka to at least 2 because the card is awesome vs Control and you want to draw it every game.
