If you're gonna break the budget in half and use a list banned in every format, may as well optimize the mana base with underground rivers and fetches and watery graves and the like.

UB Rat Colony

Rat Colony plus Tetsuko Umezawa equals scary amounts of unblockable damage.

I'm looking to optimize this build (minus Scarab God and Vraska's Contempt) and it feels like a slow tempo deck. Any recommendations for sideboard or mainboard adjustments that are probably glaringly obvious and I'm missing them completely?

Something of note is that you can't actually go infinite with Celebrated Combatant. it prevents itself from using its ability more than once each turn.

General Magic / Homicidal Seclusion creatures?
« on: February 08, 2018, 09:16:00 am »
I'm trying to develop a casual deck that's centered around controlling exactly one creature at a time and making it powerful via Homicidal Seclusion and Deadly Wanderings (and maybe Demonic Rising). However, I'm drawing a blank of creatures that'd be good for the deck. The only one I've found so far is Skittering Horror.

Would it be reasonable to splash other colors for the deck, or better to stay mono black?

In either situation, what are some creatures that are good at running solo?

Your current issue is that you depend on a lot of things going right and on a slow win condition in a fast format. To turn on Gate to the Afterlife faster, some cards like Thought Scour may prove useful, and is also a cantrip. Any way you can dump cards into your own grave fast enough, if you want to have a chance of winning.

You also seem to be a bit too all-in on the infect plan. Some basic utility like Fatal Push and Remand (Or alternatives if you're planning to play on a budget) would be helpful and up interaction, so your opponent can't just do their thing and suddenly win, like Ad Nauseam or Scapeshift. Also, basic sideboard tech might also prove useful for you.

Torment of Tron-fire

"If X is big enough, I guess it doesn't really matter what the spell does."
-Local FNM player

BG Tron, with Torment of Hailfire as a finisher.

This list is far from optimal. I was wondering what suggestions might be made to streamline it or make it more effective while keeping Torment of Hailfire. I'm not a regular Tron player, so the list probably seems clunky. Any suggestions for adjustments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

General Magic / Re: Mitotic Manipulation?

First off, thanks for responding! I have begun construction of your proposed blue/white control deck, and it's looking like it'll be plenty of fun to pilot.

The fact that Mitotic Manipulation is a sorcery is something that I will admit I had not considered, largely due to the fact that my playgroup generally plays slower than most modern tournaments. Since my playgroup plays a bit slower, hopefully it'll get a bit more of a chance for traction, and end up being able to get going.

Sorry this response doesn't have very many words, especially compared to how much you've contributed, (which I am extremely grateful for) but I want to thank you again for being a good help.

General Magic / Mitotic Manipulation?
« on: October 15, 2016, 04:35:35 am »
So I'm considering making a mono blue list that includes Mitotic Manipulation as a four of. I'm the only person I know who thinks it's an absolutely amazing card. But I am dry on ideas. Naturally, I want to squeeze value out of it, but I know that isn't always the case. So I have a few questions.

1. What's cards are out there that can manipulate card names besides their own?

2. What are good targets for Mitotic Manipulation?

3. Why is this not used more?

An answer to the questions would be much appreciated. Even if you don't answer, thanks for looking. Any suggestions on cards would obviously be appreciated as well.

Hive Mind

Ramp into Hive Mind as quickly as possible, and cast a pact for the game.

My question is pretty much this: What can I do in order to make sure that I can combo off? Whether it's consistency or speed, what can be done? (The pact choices are largely based on my local meta.)

HUGS

Make everyone draw tons of cards and love you, while you likely have about 15 cards in your hand. Play big creatures or deck out with Laboratory Maniac to win.

This is definitely a work in progress, and I was rather curious what kinds of cards I could put in for a multiplayer game of at least three people in order to make this deck even more ridiculous. I wanted to make this deck purely because of the ridiculousness of a game where there were three Rites of Flourishing in play. Any suggestions for consistency?

Mirror Production

The plan is to force the deck into Mirror-Mad phantasm and Laboratory Maniac as soon as possible, create a token/copy of Mirror-Mad, and mill yourself out for game the next turn.

So the question is this: How can I improve consistency and efficiency? Even if I can't seal the game until turn six at the earliest, I would rather the ability to guarantee the game's end, rather than depend on blind luck.

In that case, what would you suggest I change? The majority of my creatures are already high cost and/or are legendaries, so it's hard to want to add more copies.

It's not Relentless Rats, but Marrow-Gnawer may be a card to consider. Sack a rat, then put out a bunch of tokens. Seems like a legitimate trade-off to me.

Deck Reviews / Budget Esper Dragon Control

Esper Dragon Control

I'll briefly list each card

Setup-
Anticipate, Dig through Time, Dragonlord Ojutai, Monastery Siege.
Running Ojutai is counterproductive to building a budget deck, but let's face it; it's a flying tank that triggers a free Anticipate.

Counterspells-
Cancel, Silumgar's Scorn
Counterspells that shut down things quickly. What's not to like?

Field control-
Foul-Tongue Invocation, Murderous Cut, Revoke existence, Crux of Fate, Ojutai, Soul of Winter, Icefall Regent, Silumgar, the Drifting Death.
This is where a number of my cards are, to ensure that once the field is set, it stays that way.

Other-
Dragonlord's Perogative
Draw power and I'll likely have a dragon.

What cards would make better fill ins or contribute to the deck? Again, i'm building on a budget, so no Thoughtsieze, please. Thanks for taking the time to look at this!
