I wonder if Honored Crop-Captain could find a home in some 8-whack variants.

RW
Human warrior

Whenever it attacks, other attacking creatures get +1/+0 until end of turn.

Now that Modern Masters is out I could finally grab 4 of Goblin Guide :-) Love the new Artwork.
Goblin Burrows is out, it was too weak.

And instead of Colorless Signal Pest I went for Goblin Wardriver. Counts for all spells that check for Goblins, like the Goblin Grenade. Also triggers the Foundry Street Denizen.

Finally I added a functional 15-card sideboard and tweaked here and there :-)

Wow, I had Pithing needle a LOT more expensive in mind.

So:

1) Ratchet Bomb
2) Pithing Needle
3) Tormod's Crypt
4) Ghost Quarter

is what I consider the most useful and budget friendly cards so far :-)

Keep the ideas coming :-)

Thanks for your first suggestions :-)

I actually have some spare Basilisk Collar, and at 1 Mana it's easy to integrate, good idea :-)
Pithing needle seems a good idea, I have to check the pricing on that. Had in mind that it was expensive.
Loxodon Warhammer might also be nice, it's a card I remember from our early time in magic around 8th edition :-)

Hey guys! In my playgroup we almost never use actual 15-card sideboards.

But I got the idea of making at least an universal Sideboard to use alongside my decks if possible. At least it's more flexible than having no sideboard at all ;-)
So the cards would preferably colorless to be flexible as it gets.

What started my thoughts was Ratchet Bomb to get rid of Token armys.
To keep it casual and budget friendly I don't want to buy things like Ensnaring Bridge, Chalice of the Void and co.

My personal non-pauper, non-EDH decks at the moment: 8-Whack Goblins, Mono B Reanimator, U/B Rogues, Mono G Overrun, Mono B Sacrifice and soon again Soul Sisters.

What would be your ideas for some basic, flexible, allround sideboard cards?
Again my first thought:
1) Ratchet Bomb

Not being a modern specific Player, what I like most are reprints of expensive cards I lack, especially Goblin Guide.
But what sets the brain gears in motion are the rarity downshifts.

Burning-tree Emissary in pauper? Yesssss!

What format are we talking about?  I ask because it matters greatly about what cards/strategies we can recommend.

Edit: I see you are talking casual but does that mean we can use any card like Vintage? or do you guys restrict yourselves to Modern?

None of us own any power nine cards for example. We ask each other if it's okay to play cards that are banned or restricted in Legacy, like my Necropotence deck. So most likely Legacy applies to our casual pool.

From the mentioned cards defense grid looks sweet. That makes a fog effect cost at least 4, Batwing Brume 5... Plow Under would be better the more I focus on Beastmaster Ascension and Garruk Wildspeaker instead of Overrun.

Good ideas so far, thank you already :-)

From time to time I enjoy playing a kind of "timmy" mono G Overrun deck against my friends.
As sideboards aren't used that much in our casual kitchen-table playgroup very often my friends didn't respond much to a cast Overrun.

That's until I ran blind into a lethal Batwing Brume.

Now I'm thinking about options to protect any kind of Overrun, Overwhelming Stampede or Garruk Wildspeaker pump effect that's at sorcery speed.
Xantid Swarm and Hope of Ghirapur both don't seem to work.

Only card that would fit in for mono G that I found so far would be Pact of Negation to swing for lethal. But moneywise it's kind of expensive.

Do you have any other ideas to play around those fog effects? They would also harm the strategy if I go for Craterhoof Behemoth or Beastmaster Ascension.

EDIT:
Probably cheapest option that could work would be using Birds of Paradise and Eldrazi Tokens for an Arcane Denial or something close.

Ah, MTGO doesn't count those old editions, mhm?
But your substitution is also good nonetheless :)

Maybe you could switch it for Goblin Grenade ? That was a common in Fallen Empires.
And 5 damage for a single Goblin and single Mana is nice :D

Sadly this only works if you play without the banlist. Empty the warrens is banned in pauper :-|

I'm going to find out when my friends arrive next time :-D
Your point is totaly valid so I started the Goblin Burrows as a one-of for testing. It's probably better if you run 12-whack in form of Signal Pest, maybe.

Some builds use Contested War Zone but I'm not a big fan of that either. Looming Spires also looks to weak to add it.
So maybe this deck will end up with 19 mountains :-D
