Commander Discussion / Re: Thoughts on Phyrexia AWB1, Toxic & commander
« on: February 05, 2023, 05:19:52 am »
I honestly don't think it's a big issue, considering how many commanders can one-shot someone if they get through with one pump spell or one really efficient equipment. That's before delving into how many decks can combo off early turns, even in a casual setting.

There is always going to be a clock at the end of the day, just depends on what everyone is playing.

I do think Toxic adds more options to play Poison in a control shell versus the pure aggro Infect usually wants. Toxic (and Corrupted once active) allows for getting a few counters on each opponent and then shift into a defensive position and proliferate, whereas Infect (from what I've seen) tends to focus one person and the other players stabilize to beat the Infect player down.

Of course, a person can't sit down and NOT expect to get some hate for playing Toxic or Infect before the game even starts. This problem, however, isn't limited to this archetype. Most popular commanders probably get a response out of people before a game even starts, even if the person is playing a way lower power level version or goofy jank build. Though I understand why people act that way, even if I don't agree on it. Though that could simply be from playing with people the odd time that play more competitive and just assume my deck is cEDH because I happened to pick "insert commander here".

I guess an odd opinion would be whether or not a person only ever plays in 4 player games? My friend group is pretty laid back and casual when it comes to EDH, and we often have games (EDH or otherwise) with more than 4 players. Many strategies become harder to pull off as you increase your number of opponents past 3, but I still feel like I'm going to give Toxic a try.

So if my math is right, and to be honest those skills are questionable at times, previews start this coming Thursday. What are we hoping for?

A full cycle of 13 cards. We know we're getting Triskaidekaphile and Triskaidekaphobia exists. Even if not super competitive or strong, I think a cycle would be neat to see.

Looks like a decent amount of spoilers today (so far, only 11AM here).

Was kind of hoping if they did a named and/or legendary beholder it would at least have an ability for each colour plus colourless to represent their various eye beams.

Flavourwise I like what I see. Various cards with multiple choices, rolling a d20 to see what you get, etc.

I think it also triggers anything that specifies "casting noncreature spells", no? Such as Kykar, Wind's Fury .

The cycle of 2 colour artifact indestructible lands is interesting.

So happy to see Chatterfang, Squirrel General . I already had cards set aside for Acornelia, Fashionable Filcher and Toski, Bearer Of Secrets deck. Guess I'll just be combining them and also waiting to see how many other Squirrel cards they reprint or introduce in the set.

Maybe I'm just not in a deck building mood, but beyond Krark + Sakashima coin flip value town..... there aren't too many new commanders I'm interested in. That or I feel they're too obvious, but I also dislike the notion that using an obvious general or partner duo somehow takes away from the deck you make.

- Ardenn + Rograkh could be fun in a casual setting and throw in that new lizard to try and put the hurt on everyone.
- Still don't have a zombie deck in any form of how my group plays, so Nevinyrral could be an option.
- Yurlok could be fun too with a high risk strategy. Krosan Grip on your own Upwelling after filling everyones pool and casting an X spell for example.

Otherwise I see some potential for upgrades. We'll see, though, as it might change once I draft a box with some friends and actually have some of the cards.

*Edit*
I guess pairing Sakashima with a lot of partners is neat as you can really do a bunch with a clone theme that ignores legendary rule. Like having multiple vial smashers out with some damage multipliers and cast an X spell for first spell of turn, etc.

Charix, the Raging Isle gets Commander's Plate

My day, now ruined, when I realize this only makes it a 3/20 and not a 4/20.

Krark, the Thumbless + Sakashima of a Thousand Faces.

I will be taking apart my Rakdos, the Showstopper coin flip chaos deck. Due to the nature of most coin flip cards it will still be chaotic, but I want to make a value deck based on my understanding of how Krark and his coin flip for returning / copying a spell works. Maybe someone can correct me now? Due to the fact Krark doesn't target the spell, if Krark and Sakashima (as a copy pf Krark) are both in play, would I be able to both win a flip and lose a flip to cast and return a spell to my hand? Then throw in Krark's Thumb for making favourable odds, etc.

Yes.  This does work.  My playgoup was discussing this exact thing earlier this week.

In this scenario, you'll get two coin flips with each spell you cast.  If you win both, you'll end up with three of the spell, the original plus two copies.  If you win one and lose one, you'll end up with a copy of the spell on the stack and the original spell returned to your hand.  It doesn't matter whether you win the first flip or the second flip; the result is the same.  If you lose both, you'll end up with the spell returned to your hand and no copies.

It makes sense, but good to know my understanding of cards when first seeing them is getting better over time.  :)

Still looking over other new cards and trying to get past that "honeymoon" phase as I feel now that the whole set is revealed I'm falling into my typical "I only really want to buy like 5 cards total for the odd upgrade to existing decks".

court of cunning, if you can stay monarch, sounds like a very powerful card. it only needs 3 or 4 turns to win a game (assuming 60 cards and you have some more mill spells)

Sped up even further if you have Bruvac the Grandiloquent out to mill people 20 per turn. Or a Paradox Haze. Or both.

And/Or Sphinx of the Second Sun in the mix to take another upkeep later in your turn.

Well, Rabbit Wizard got spoiled and wasn't Boros to match the Sultai nature of the Turtle Shaman. It also doesn't have haste and not sure what the flavour text say until translated.

Truly the darkest timeline.

The new Sakashima looks like it would go nice with Krark. Coin flip is mainly in red anyways, but having that blue to support is nice.

That is also assuming I am thinking of how Krark works correctly. With him + Sakashima out copying him, that's two coin flips per spell. Seeing as Krark's ability doesn't target the spell, in theory you can both win and lose a flip meaning the spell returns to hand plus gets cast copied. This sounds like value town with cheap draw spells, counterspells to protect your board state, etc.
Add Krark's Thumb to that and you get to choose your flips, too.

Sakashima also allows for multiple Krark Thumbs due to Mirror Gallery ability. For all the confusion that can also cause due to a single event not being able to be modified multiple times. Probably not worth it for the headache.

I love that Hex got a huge upgrade with Necrotic Hex. All for the low cost of 1 extra mana.
