While we're discussing these things, what's everyone's thoughts on Clever Concealment? If it didn't have convoke I'd say it's not worth it as a protection piece, but this is a maybe now.

Same for Monumental Corruption. In the right deck you can draw a lot of cards, but is it worth it at 5 mana and 1 life per card?

I suspect Clever Concealment will find a home in aggro decks that tap out each turn.  Like a selesnya tokens deck.  Clever Concealment becomes a free Teferi's Protection. 


Monumental Corruption looks more like a win con to me.  Especially in a mill deck.  Make a bunch of treasure; cast a large Monumental Corruption pointed at an opponent.  You'll hit their library and their life total.

You would be correct.  Thran Portal will gain any basic land type upon entering the battlefield.  Its name is still Thran Portal.

It gains the basic land type, but it’s not actually a basic land (the same as e.g. Tundra), and it looks like only basic lands count. Otherwise Urborg, Tomb to Yawgmoth could turn this on by itself.

I stand corrected.  Upon closer read of Monument to Perfection ... Thran Portal will not assist.

A card is only actually worth what someone is willing to pay you for it.


If your LGS doesn't want it, your only options are to sell directly to someone, or to sell online.


I have bought and sold on ebay.  Recently, there are a lot more counterfeit cards on ebay.  But the risk is with buying.  When you're selling a legitimate card, there is no problem.  For high value cards (>$250) ebay does now require that your cards get shipped to their authentification service first.  Then they ship to the buyer.  This could be easier for you.  Ebay will take a percentage of the sale as a fee.  This can be a good option if you ultimately want cash in your bank account.


I have also sold cards to TCGplayer.com as a trade-in.  They are currently buying Kaladesh Masterpiece Mana Crypt for about $650.  There won't be any fees taken out; you will get that entire amount.  This can be a good option if you want money (store credit) to buy more Magic cards.

You know you don't need to ping yourself with the Vulshok Sorcerer?  Same result, except you don't lose life.


Cast Commander.  Dino trigger; you take 1 damage and Auntie gets 1 counter.
Ping opponent with the sorcerer.  Opponent at 7 life.
Equip Auntie with boots.
Swing with Auntie (3/3) and dino.  Opponent at 1 life.
Slap down Sulfuric Vortex post combat.
Win in opponent's upkeep.  You still have 6 life just in case opponent can gain life during upkeep.

Not frequently.  A lot of the holiday promos have cost me more than $50.

Yuriko wants Big CMC spells alongside a bunch of unblockable weenies.


Narset wants all the big non-creature spells.  I once had a Narset deck with zero creatures.

ApothecaryGeist, with every new set and supplemental product, I feel more and more for your complete collection endeavour. How are you finding it? Is it still something you're excited for and passionate about? Or are you feeling it is more of a chore these days?

It is still a fun hobby.  I enjoy the escapism.  I have a stack of cards from the new set, checking off my checklist. 


It used to be that once I obtained the latest expansion set,  I would have a month or so to build decks with the cards and get to know the mechanics.


What I find now is that there is less time between releases.  I don't have as much time to build decks.  I used to build at least one new deck with each set.  And then update most of my existing decks.  Now I'm only building two or three new decks per year.  Never more than one with any given set release.  And I'm not updating decks anymore.  I play one as-originally-built until I tire of it, then disassemble for parts.


I actually kinda like the not updating decks.  I really get to know a decks strengths and weaknesses when it hasn't changed in over a year.


I don't like that I don't have time to really absorb one set before the next one comes out ... set on an entirely new plane ... with entirely new mechanics.  I still have to ask "How is blitz different from dash?"  And I never fully got the semantics of mutate ... Is the top the one with all the abilities?  Bottom?  I miss spending a whole year on one plane.


I do still have one of everything.  Uncertain how much longer that will maintain.  Going to go through at least Brothers War and Phyrexia United buying mostly singles and see how that goes.  I would periodically over the years assess my desire to continue collecting entire sets.  At one point I recall thinking that I might stop if they ever did to Magic like they do with Monopoly - having different versions of the same game with just different IPs as the skin.  We seem to be getting there.

I am definitely experiencing product fatigue.  Have been for a couple years now.  It's a lot more work to keep up with product releases and cards that I need.


Sealed product prices continue to increase, thanks to the removal of MSRP.  With Brothers War, I plan to buy a lot less sealed product.  This past year I have also noticed a decline in singles prices.   I will simultaneously begin buying more singles with Brothers War.


My LGS still holds weekly Commander Night on Mondays.  I attend frequently.  There's a new (smaller) store that holds Commander Night on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  I attend that one occasionally.


My LGS is currently remodeling.  They will be installing kiosks where you can browse their entire singles library digitally.  No more price checking at the checkout counter with staff.  I'm excited to see how that goes.


Edit:  P.S.  I do NOT like the sticker mechanic.  But I am enjoying asking the folks at my LGS if they have "Sassy Gremlin Blood"

The answer is that it depends on the precise timing.   It can be done.


Seek the Horizons is on the stack.  Opposition Agent is cast in response.  You need to let Opposition Agent resolve.  Then, with Seek the Horizons still on the stack, cast Sudden Spoiling.  This will erase Opposition Agent's abilities.


The reason for this timing is that the wording of Sudden Spoiling is that it affects only the creatures that the player has on field at the time Sudden Spoiling resolves.  If you cast Sudden Spoiling while Opposition Agent is still on the stack, Spoiling will resolve first, then the agent with all abilities intact.

Nearby Planet has no ability to make more mana.

It has all of the basic land types. It can tap for any colour of mana.

Correct.  But it can only make ONE mana.  With a 'tron land out, the tron land will make more than one man.  Nearby Planet intself will still only make one mana.
