Commander Discussion / Re: Krenko Royale
« le: Octobre 08, 2021, 01:10:06 am »
Oh wait I forgot to mention an important detail. One of the people in this game exclusively films his games. Not sure if he posts them online or not. Either way, it means my reputation is a stake, so I need to make sure I at least put up a good show.

MustaKotka has already promised to abandon me if I fail so this is serious.
New mission: find Krenko Royale VODs online ASAP; I need to see Morg choking away Krenko games. I would die laughing watching Morg drop Goblin King thinking it's asymmetrical just to pass the turn and get slapped by 60 goblin tokens

General Magic / Re: If you could create any one card, what would it be?
« le: Octobre 08, 2021, 12:43:12 am »

I'll try to guess some hidden themes for my card:

  • Like I said, I find activated abilities to be super cool; 4 of the 5 commanders I've built have activated abilities
  • It gives very familiar vibes to Meren in terms of the mana cost & reanimation, to Ezuri in terms of being a 2/2 elf, and to Osgir in terms of the mana cost & exile clause
  • The flavor text between Red_Wyrm and I vaguely reminds me of a thread where someone asked for suggestions regarding their next deck to build, but I can't find it. I may just be imagining things lol
I couldn't think of any hidden meaning in the image, though.

There are admittedly more secrets here than for the other cards, because I designed both of these cards at the same time. Two cards, two users, twice as many secrets. Here's my thought process behind these two cards.

  • First, I had to partner you two. The running joke that you two are a couple was just too perfect to not include.
  • Red_Wyrm has expressed several times how much he hates slivers, so I made a commander that hates on a specific creature type. It's also why the flavor text says "Choose Slivers".
  • Conversly, I know how much you like tribal themes, so I made a commander that loves a specific tribe. I also know how much you really like elves, so that's why the flavor text says "choose elves".
  • The image for Red_Wyrm is a crop of his profile pic. Your image is of a spartan from the Halo franchise that is casting a spell. Hence, Wizard-Spartan. The bolas horns are a nice coincidence.
  • You like elves so I knew elves had to be a creature type. Wizard was also obvious and soldier is the closest thing to a spartan.
  • Green-black was chosen partially because a lot of elves are in those colours, but chosen mostly to pay homage to your previous username, GolgariFTW.
  • Fun little tidbit, the two commanders don't have to choose the same creature type. Gives a little more room for designing a deck. You can pick the same type to destroy and then reanimate your opponents things, or you can hate on ine type and reanimate your own things.
Wow, there's a lot I missed. That's really, really neat. I don't play Halo, but that connection makes sense

You've made my day month, Morg. Thanks :D

Congrats, you're all my inspiration for cards that I would like to see (while knowing that these will never be printed). There are a bunch of hidden jokes and references so let's see if you can catch them all. I'd like to get an apology out to the users that didn't get a card featured here, as there were others that I wanted to make a card for. I tried real hard, but couldn't come up with anything in time for the deadline I had set.
I'm so touched you made a card for me, it's so cool!!! It's crazy that we've never met irl and have only played together once but your card is exactly the commander I would want to build. I would probably tear both Ezuri and Meren apart to build that, not even kidding.

And boy, is it perfect, especially when paired with Red_Wyrm's. It combines the 2 themes I love playing most (tribal + graveyard). In addition (and I don't know if this was intentional) it even pairs well with some more hidden/subthemes push some commanders over the edge for me (mainly activated abilities because I can reduce their cost & copy them). The partner is an incredible touch, and flavor text

Anyways, all of these cards are super cool and I'm honored you made one for me. (and an insanely awesome one at that!)

I love this community.

Commander Deck Reviews / Re: Touch-Ups on Budget Kumena Merfolk (EDH)
« le: Septembre 23, 2021, 05:03:26 pm »
I'm taking a break from updating it, but I can give you a rundown of new cards I might include.

+1 Svyelun of Sea and Sky: an auto-include for obvious reasons
+1 Wizard Class: all 3 levels are very good (put the +1/+1 counters on Kumena and start killing people with commander damage)
+1 Triskaidekaphile: this is a spicier win condition, but fun nonetheless; I personally might not include it, but it's cool
+1 Dress Down: meta-dependent, you can activate Kumena and then flash it in; it replaces itself, which is nice

I'd personally probably swap out Kopala, Warden of Waves for Svyelun of Sea and Sky and Imprisoned in the Moon for Wizard Class.

When evaluating new sets for this deck, I focus on any new Merfolk, then new interaction, then minor themes like card draw, untapping, etc. When figuring what to swap out for new cards, I try to swap out similar cards (if possible). For example, Svyelun gives Merfolk Ward 1 plus has indestructible and can draw cards, and Kopala only gives Ward 2, so Kopala would be good to take out.

Starting here "I’ll ask those players to look beyond their own enjoyment and attempt to see the bigger picture."
That alone is enough for me to lose any respect for Sheldon's decision-making process. EDH = casual format = fun is top priority ≠ ignore fun "for the bigger picture."

The way I interpreted that sentence, personally, is that one has to also look at the enjoyment of the other people in the pod. Which is something I totally agree with.
Then he needed to rephrase if he meant that. I can see that side, but my initial interpretation was look beyond how much fun the card was to play and look at how "good" it is for the format/how it fits into the RC's idea of EDH.

Commander Discussion / Re: Your controversial opinion

The alphabet one is this quick thing. I think the letters should be ordered by their frequency in the english language. You do the six vowels first (including "Y") and then all the consonants, and they're ordered by how often they show up. The current order of the alphabet is completely arbitrary. The new order should be:

E A O I U Y T N S R H D L C M F W G P B V K X Q J Z
That's a cool idea. Only problem is that the frequency of letters would change over time, right? Certain words fall out of use, new words are introduced, etc. so the ordering of letters would have to change, which would be a major pain for alphabetizing, learning the language, etc.

I never really thought Sheldon was as bad as people said, but I am more and more coming around on the whole "Sheldon bad" thing.

Even worse, where's the reasoning to unban Worldfire? I don't see how it fits into into individual fun (nobody playing against Worldfire is having fun) or "the bigger picture" (I don't even know what the metric is for that, but I don't see how Worldfire fits into it and Golos doesn't). This makes me think most of the process is just anecdotal/personal experience instead of a rubric-style decision-making process, as there seems to be little consistency in terms of goals of the RC.

I'm not personally against the ban/unban, but I am vehemently against the reasoning behind the ban/unban.

Most of my controversial takes are very heavy stuff that could be entire discussions on their own. If you're really interested... I'll think about it. For now, some of the lighter stuff.

...

I also think the alphabet is in the wrong order, but that's this whole other thing.
I'd like to hear more about both of these.

Also, the people downvoting people for giving their unpopular opinions (as OP requested) should really do some critical thinking and understand that the purpose of this whole thing is to get opinions people disagree with.

My unpopular opinion: This game is slowly dying due to oversaturation (it's not irreversable, though). When too much s*** is being added, it's less likely new players will stay with the game (too daunting for them) and veteran players will get exhausted trying to keep up. Combined, the audience should start shrinking if the game continues the way it's going.

Holy $#!+.  It wasn't enough to make the now-ubiquitous "everything gets this set's mechanic" card, but they had to make everything UNCOUNTERABLE too?  Seriously?  Snapcaster Mage is already banned in at least one format; they had to make one that's THAT MUCH better?

What's that?  People ONLY cast Counterspells with Snapcaster, and the effect is symmetrical so it's bad?  As if.  I'm just about done with the powercreep in Standard.  Other formats and I MIGHT not care, but this will be IN STANDARD.  WTF WOTC.
It's also 5 mana and doesn't do anything by itself. It's been awhile since I've played Standard, but creatures that cost 5-6+ mana should either give you guaranteed value or be difficult to remove. This is neither. At best, you wait until you have 6-7 mana so you can play it and replay a cantrip. Also, it does turn off some of blue's most powerful instants, which means there's a serious opportunity cost to including him.

One could even say it's unbearable.

I'm here all night

Instead of trying to find bigger deckboxes, have you considered reusable tokens?

InfiniTokens are really cool because you can use a dry-erase marker to write out the specific token you need, then erase once you're done. You'll only need like 5-10 in each deckbox, and you won't need to buy/keep track of what tokens you need.

I know this isn't exactly what you asked for, but they've been really helpful for me.

General Magic / Re: MTG Showcase 2021 to announce 2022 set schedule
« le: Août 26, 2021, 02:51:45 pm »
I recently decided to sell my collection, and the new announcement actually made me feel better about the decision. Magic just doesn't feel the same anymore, to me at least. Too many pushed cards, too much stress on value, too many random cash grabs.

I didn't even check the last few sets for new elves.

Oh wow. I got rid of a lot of my extra bulk a few months ago and have been debating downsizing even more. I’m thinking down to just my trade binders and decks. I use to feel the need to have a play set of every card ever printed but I just don’t feel that anymore.
I guess I'm lucky in that my collection is very small as a relatively new player (I don't really buy many boosters, most of my money has gone into singles for my decks).

It's really unfortunate to see more established players being exhausted by the onslaught of product, but I can't even imagine how exhausted you all must feel, considering I am much less established and still don't feel like buying anything recently.

I don't know what the turning point for me was, though. It was like a light switch. I went from excited to see new spoilers to barely paying attention to AFR and MH2. I mean, they printed Circle of Dreams Druid, which is, like, exactly what I want for Ezuri, but I feel nothing about it.

We still like the game a lot, but not the effort to keep up!
That's a great way to put it for me. I still love playing Magic with friends, but purchasing cards? Not so much.

Does that include your EDH decks, or just singles you aren't using? If it's everything, do you plan to play magic in any capacity?

If you're just catching up—or want to skip to read about your favorite part—here's a rundown of the biggest moments from Magic Showcase 2021:

Secret Lair's Out of Time Superdrop is live now! Get the details and order now before the time stream takes it away.
Innistrad: Midnight Hunt and Innistrad: Crimson Vow arrive later this year, with the debut moment full of previews for Midnight Hunt coming on Thursday, September 2.
There's exciting Magic events and releases coming to game stores soon! Learn about Store Championships and Commander Party, as well as Innistrad: Double Feature, Pioneer Challenger Decks, and Commander Collection: Black to see what's coming to your local game store.
2022 will be a big year for Magic's major releases. Check out the first details about Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, Streets of New Capenna, Dominaria United, and The Brothers' War.
But those four sets aren't all: Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate, Jumpstart 2022, Double Masters 2022, and Unfinity add even more Magic to enjoy next year.
Magic's Universes Beyond keeps expanding. See how Warhammer 40,000, Fortnite, and Street Fighter will arrive in 2022, with The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth™ following in 2023.
MTG Arena drops one of its biggest updates this week with Jumpstart: Historic Horizons arriving on August 26. Here's what comes next for MTG Arena.
Get your TV ready. We also shared a sneak peek as Magic comes to Netflix next year.
Ok but I'm already experiencing wallet fatigue (I literally just didn't buy any cards from the two most recent sets because I just couldn't bother), and they are supposedly releasing 8 sets (4 of which are standard-legal) + external IP Secret Lairs (oh boy Fortnite :P) next year?

I hope this game is still going strong this time next year, I truly do, but I can't see how a lot of players like me keep up their level of engagement with such an onslaught of product. It's kind of ridiculous and unsustainable, imo.

Commander Discussion / Re: Tips for introducing a new player
« le: Août 23, 2021, 03:41:29 pm »
I was shown by a friend using the intro decks, moved up to a few of their super casual 60 card decks, and played a lot with the Elves v Inventors & Merfolk v Goblins dual decks. I then used the dual decks to teach several other of my friends.

I'd be careful starting them out with Commander. If you can, get the intro decks to teach them basic game mechanics. Once they understand those, then you can probably move onto an EDH precon. I just don't like starting with a Commander precon because it's overwhelming for a new player to learn the rules of the game as a whole plus EDH-specific rules (I don't think someone who is just learning how all the different types of cards work would understand how commanders work or how multiplayer formats play). Also, even precons introduce new, complicated mechanics, and there can be a lot more nuance regarding how a player wins (vs in casual 60 card, it's pretty much always play creatures and beat your opponent down asap). Oh, make sure they win. Don't make it extremely obvious, but my friend made sure we had very simple decks (so there wasn't much they could do to outplay me) and would make less than optimal attacks. Winning a couple games early on was a major ego boost and made me want to play again.
