Hmmm I don't think you've got enough removal / counters in here; better fix that.

Oop my bad, I'll have to add more in later iterations.

I've had an interesting thought. A couple, actually.

Lorewise, Elesh Norn is the surpreme Praetor - that is, she has taken over New Phyrexia by force. Her exact means are unknown, but it is seen in the latest story ("A Garden of Flesh", https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/magic-story/garden-flesh-2022-05-03) that she holds a sort of divine right over an army of Phyrexians on New Phyrexia as head of the Machine Orthodoxy, the "church" of Yawgmoth.

The most interesting development in this story was that SPOILER ALERT the nightmare Planeswalker Ashiok was manipulating her mind into a state of dreaming where she created Elesh's nightmare. I'm not going to narrate the story here, but the long and short of it is that now it can be reasonably concluded that under the influence of Ashiok's nightmares, Elesh has developed a paranoia that stems from a foreign sliver of doubt in her own church.

So what do we know about Elesh Norn so far?
  • She is the most powerful Phyrexian Praetor with the greatest influence.
  • She has a semi-hive-mind connection with the other Phyrexians who preside in New Phyrexia.
  • A seed of doubt and paranoia has been planted in her mind.
  • She is white-aligned and must (at least partly) occupy that design space.

So what can we extrapolate from this? Well, we can take these properties and convert them into card design aspects.
Elesh Norn's old old character leans into the design area of going wide with her +2/+2 anthem and heavily focuses on her oppressive presence with the more destructive -2/-2. The theme of oppression is a good one - it perfectly represents the weight of her influence, control, and corrupted religion. This theme is seen elsewhere with tax effects (Mana Tithe, Smothering Tithe), spell restriction effects (Deafening Silence, Rule of Law) and -X/-X effects, which are outside of the white color pie. I would also be very surprised if her recent character development didn't make it into the card frame.

So here are my ideas for some lines of text we might see on the new Elesh Norn:

1: Similar style to old Elesh - buff/debuff, focused on amassing a devoted army.
  • At the beginning of combat on your turn, up to one target creature you control gets +1/+1 for each creature you control and gains vigilance until end of turn.
  • At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep, up to one target creature that player controls gets -1/-1 until end of turn for each creature you control. Tap it.

2: Lean into taxation! Similar to the new Jin-Gitaxias though.
  • The first spell you cast each turn costs {4} less to cast.
  • The first spell your opponents cast each turn costs {4} more to cast.

3: A different take on taxes (static effect):
  • Creature spells your opponents cast cost {2} more to cast.
  • Creature spells you cast cost {2} less to cast.

4: Something a little spicier. Tokens.
  • Whenever you cast a creature spell, create a 1/1 colorless Phyrexian Construct artifact creature token and you gain 1 life. This ability triggers only once each turn.
  • Whenever a Phyrexian token you control dies, return up to one target creature card from your graveyard to your hand and each opponent loses one life. This ability triggers only once each turn.

And if anyone wants to tell me that reanimation/disentombing is out of the color pie, go ahead. I'm waiting.

Oh, and one more thought:

5: Combat-centric buffs and debuffs.
  • Whenever you attack, each attacking creature gets +X/+X until end of turn, where X is the number of attacking creatures.
  • Whenever a creature an opponent controls attacks, it gets -X/-X until end of turn, where X is the number of attacking creatures.

Have fun pointing out all the holes and problems in these concepts. Have a good rest of your day wherever you are.

Deck Reviews / Re: Combodeck: Unicorn Stampede

I think people are missing the point that this is a combo deck, not a tribal deck... Profane Tutor is vital to find the pieces, so you should definitely keep black to support it.

Here's a real suggestion: Corpse Knight triggers for life loss on your creatures' ETBs, so it skips the need for the second card that Cliffhaven Vampire needs! I would suggest replacing your 4x Knight of Cliffhaven, which doesn't directly relate to the combo (that I can see :o) with 4 copies of Corpse Knight to increase your chances of assembling a lethal board! Completing that playset of Profane Tutor would also be really useful in guaranteeing that you find the Blessed Sanctuary or one of the blinkers.

And if you wanted to get extra combo-centric, you could even swap in a playset of Flickerwisp to further increase your chances of assembling that combo. It does the job of either of the other two blinkers. These could potentially replace Consulate Skygate, since that 3 power is good for deterring attacks. Decent chump blocker in addition to being a combo piece.

My final note would be that you could probably cut down to 22 lands, as Elan said. It's a pretty low-to-the-ground deck, so having a higher concentration of draws that affect the table would be welcome. Also a higher ratio of white:black in the manabase would be good. If you have a little bit of budget, Shineshadow Snarl would be a good replacement for your guildgates.

Overall, the deck looks cool, if a tiny bit slow to assemble. But I'm betting the reason it isn't optimal is because of budget - if you had unlimited cash, you would have Marsh Flats instead of guildgates. This is a fun idea for a budget kitchen-table build, so good on you!

I built this deck as is. I told my playgroup I was testing a "Dungeon and Dragon" deck, because it had a lot of dice rolling and coin flips. We have seen commanders going around the table, illicit auction bets of 39 lives for a commander. And just last night we built a monster with Eye of the Storm that stalled the game for about an hour. One player eventually quit and another milled himself. This has been a fun few games, but I have to put that deck on the bench for a bit now.

Overall 10/10, eager to play this again

WOW, that is awesome! I am so happy to hear about this chaotic brew out in the wild doing what it was built for.

Thanks for the feedback, and I hope you have even more fun with the deck in the future!

Try switching the deck's format to "Historic" and removing the card "Deck" :D

Deckstats Feedback / Feature Request: Advanced Playtester
« le: Mai 17, 2022, 01:47:40 pm »
Now correct me if this has already been mentioned, but it's a fairly common feature that I've seen on other deckbuilding websites to have a playtester - one where you can lay out the board, draw cards from a library, inspect zones, all that pizazz.

Now, I am religiously loyal to Deckstats. Its deckbuilder is the best out there, and the statistics are so neatly lined up and beautiful, thank you Nils, you're a legend. My only quip is that I grow tired of having to export my decklists to Moxfield to playtest them.

I know it's a big ask and time-consuming as far as design and programming goes, but it would be an absolute godsend (pun intended) to have a playtester that goes beyond the sample hand generator we have now.

Thoughts, anyone?

Sol Ring is a must have in any commander deck.

I mean you're absolutely right, but since Raffine costs triple colored and I'm keeping on a (very) slim budget, I had to leave it out. Most likely, it'll work its way back in in later iterations. Thanks for the input!
