Commander Deck Reviews / Re: Prismatic Bridge
« am: September 13, 2023, 09:03:32 Nachmittag »
I figured you might be new, you still did a pretty decent job though, esp factoring in your plan with Maswood Nexus

there are tons of ways to help fix your mana. you already have Chromatic Lantern and Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, but there's also Prismatic Omen. if you're looking at dorks, I'd recommend looking up 1-drops and 2-drops that can tap for any color, there are tons. you've also got Bloom Tender, which would tap for all colors if you have The Prismatic Bridge. for lands, you've got the Bond lands (Vault of Champions), Slow lands (Overgrown Farmland), and Pathways (Brightclimb Pathway), and can throw in the fetch lands from Streets of New Capenna (Brokers Hideout), which can help you tutor and proc more triggers off of Tireless Provisioner

The Reaver Cleaver is not the way to go for treasures in my opinion. 6 mana just for the chance of making treasures is a lot, and that method is super vulnerable, you've got some other solid ways. Glóin, Dwarf Emissary wouldn't be a bad idea to include

another idea is to run some of the effects where you can copy the trigger from The Prismatic Bridge (like Strionic Resonator). Sphinx of the Second Sun would give you a second trigger per turn, not to mention more mana and an extra card

Ratadrabik of Urborg would help with protecting your stuff. Storm of Saruman can give you nonlegendary copies, and Yenna, Redtooth Regent can give you a second Prismatic Bridge too. most other clone effects can't hit your enchantment and/or wouldn't be nonlegendary

Worldly Tutor, Insidious Dreams, Congregation at Dawn, and Bringer of the Black Dawn would be more ways to stack your library in addition to Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire that you already have in the deck

Commander Deck Reviews / Re: Miirym, Clone War HP/cEDH
« am: September 13, 2023, 02:12:18 Vormittag »
I put together a Miirym decklist last month. definitely wasn't trying to make mine cEDH (not my style), but there are some comparisons to note

if Curiosity is only in the deck to combo with Niv-Mizzet, Parun, I would probably gut it. by that point, you've probably already won. Aggrevated Assault is a neat card with the way you have this deck set up, maybe include Helm of the Host?

you're currently only running a few clones, Glasspool Mimic, Phantasmal Image, and Sakashima of a Thousand Faces. if you ran more, you'd be able to get a lot more of your dragons, and can sub them out for some of the less synergistic creatures (Shimmer Dragon and Changeling Berserker to name a couple)

we both went in the direction of Treasures (mmmmmm, delicious extra mana) but it seems like you're also trying to utilize them for draw (Shimmer Dragon) and damage (Reckless Fireweaver). the first idea will put you back the mana, and you can get better draw via other means. as far as the damage goes, I feel like you'll already be getting enough damage from combat, I'm not sure that Fireweaver will be needed, or you can get better damage through other means (Underworld Breach, Impact Tremors, etc). and speaking of mana, you could save some by running ways to cheat creatures into play (other than Sneak Attack), and there's a decent amount of cards that provide cost reduction that would synergize well with the deck

in line with the clones, flicker effects can help you get an extra proc off of your ETBs, and there are some of them that fit the colors that trigger at end step, meaning you can use Sneak Attack to cheat a creature into play, and then flicker it at end step to get an extra trigger off of it and also keep it around. you could also run things that double your ETBs (like Panharmonicon, which would also help if you're sticking with the ETBs from your treasures, but you honestly have enough ETBs on your creatures alone to warrant it without keeping Fireweaver)

you've got a pretty solid land base too, esp with the old dual-lands, but 10 of your lands are fetches while only 9 of your lands have a basic land type, meaning you'll have at least 1 fetch that ends up not being worth it, especially without any other manafixing like from Chromatic Lantern. might be better to just run more lands that will enter untapped. you've got the Bond lands (Vault of Champions), the Slow lands (Overgrown Farmland), the Pathways (Brightclimb Pathway), and then you could free up some of your fetch lands as well

last note: non-dragons. you've got Maskwood Nexus to make all of your creatures into dragons, but only 7 non-dragons (excluding the Spirit Guides). I've already mentioned Fireweaver. I've hit on flicker effects (you're running Deadeye Navigator). Magda is a solid include. Ragavan and Kinnan are both good cards, I feel like you can find ones that are more syngersitic, but those are up to you. the last 2 non-dragons are Dockside Extortionist and Imperial Recruiter (which is presumably used to tutor Dockside). I know Dockside is a really good card, but it's super dependent on what your opponents are playing, and there are lots of ways to make that mana (and more) from stuff that works better with the deck. that's 6 non-dragon creatures you could change, plus Maskwood Nexus at that point.

I'm not at all saying your decklist isn't good, it really is, there are just some aspects/mechanics that you might be playing too much/little into. let me know what your thoughts are, I can make my Miirym deck public if you want so that you can see how I have mine set up and compare. I might end up making mine more competitive in the future and take some notes from your deck :P

a few things:

why did you choose the lands that you did? not really seeing any reason to run the tap lands that have the two basic land types, or Path of Ancestry (you only have one other god)

not really seeing much synergy for The Reaver Cleaver, Worldslayer, Exquisite Blood (yeah, it combos with Vito, but), Morgul-Knife Wound, Spectral Grasp, or the Wizard Class, Deathbloom Gardener, Gateway Shade. there are better ways to tutor/manafix, are there specific reasons why you're running the ones you are?

I wish WotC had made it to where the backside gets cast by whomever removes the last counter, unless it gets removed by the protector, in which case it just gets put into the graveyard. Would make them way more prominent in multiplayer formats

Filigree Familiar (despite how much I love it. Foxes are the absolute best, and I have so much nostalgia for this card) can be replaced by Circuit Mender from the new Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty set. Unless you care about the creature subtype being Fox or the toughness being 2 instead of 3, Circuit Mender is inherently better.

Would also recommend running Forsaken Monument. Increases the {C} that you're tapping for, and even a little bit of lifegain is going to be helping you out.

Aeon Engine can help cheat you an "extra turn" by reversing the turn order after you pass.

Heirophant's Chalice has a decent ETB and taps for {C}, but if you're running artifact sac outlets (Rusted Slasher, Piston Sledge, etc) you can get more value from it, and if you're running recursion (eg: Myr retriever), you can form some nice loops, especially with the other ETBs that you have in there (Meteor Golem, Skyscanner, etc).

I'd recommend checking out my Sharuum deck (https://deckstats.net/decks/157837/2096111-sharuum-the-hegemon/en) or other decks that run artifact-based effects. I know that a colorless deck isn't necessarily artifacts, and I don't want to pull you too far from what you're wanting to do, but you've got a decent amount of artifacts already (I think I counted 40?)

Literally any of my decks, all of which are in my "Active Decks" folder. Going by Morganator 2.0's scale, I'd say all of my decks range from E Rank to C Rank.

Though, to be fair, none of them are optimized, only functional. The "sideboards" are the cards I plan on eventually adding to help optimize, so feel free to factor those in and tell me how they'd be rated!

Did the bird deck get your wife into the game, though?

Unfortunately not so much. She loved the effort and appreciated it, but it's just not for her. She used to like playing kitchen table 60 card on occasion, but EDH is just not her thing at all. She's not into all the extra rules and complications, higher starting life totals, longer games, multiplayer and political aspects etc. She only really used to play because she knew I liked it, but it was a lot easier for her to stomach in small doses and game of EDH is too long.

That's understandable. Shout out to you for trying!

I don't care if that's bird tribal (you still around Belwas?)

Hey guys.

Picked a good day to log back in it seems. Hope you're all doing alright.

I can safely say that I don't have single deck that would be considered a 7. Or, I don't think so at least. Truth is I don't have a clue what any of my decks would register on a power scale. All I know is if they're doing too well in my meta, I take them apart (or just stop playing them if I don't have the heart to take them apart. Sorry Yuriko). I don't know what turn any of my decks are supposed to win on, if they even have a dedicated way to win other than "eh, I might get lucky".

I mostly just play shit with a dumb theme or a weird plan. My most recent deck that I've just built now I have a little more time for hobbies again revolves around repeatedly casting Polymorph on Kefnet the Mindful. It's stupid.

Slyvester12 wants decks that aren't 7s. Ask and ye shall receive.

=====

The aforementioned bird deck:

The eventual idea is to only have cards that are birds, bird themed or have birds in the art. My wife loves birds and I was hoping this would get her into Magic.

General Magic / Re: If you could create any one card, what would it be?

If we're being serious, I think it'd be cool to see a card that causes special actions to use the stack. You want to morph? Use the stack. You want to play a land? Use the stack. Companion? Foretell? USE. THE. STACK.
Why, though? Special actions are cool in my opinion specifically because they don't use the stack.

Mana abilities are cool as well, once played against a deck that used infinite mana abilities to attempt to pay for a random spell and it won that way. The deck is based around Selvala, Explorer Returned, Skirge Familiar and Blightsteel Colossus forcing everyone else except the player to draw their deck and lose the game. Can't be responded to since it's all mana abilities, it was really cool to play against it.

I would love to see more cards with special mana abilities, i.e. they do something other than add mana at the same time as they produce mana.

Magic has long history of making cards with effects of "you can now do this thing that you normally can't do" and "you can't do this thing that you normally could do", so it'd be neat to see them make an effect like I said. It'd really only affect land playing to get the needed Mana, and I think it'd make players think about plays a lot more, akin to how they do when a blue player has Mana up on others' turns.
