General Magic / Re: Games you've enjoyed
« am: August 02, 2023, 12:25:10 Nachmittag »
I had a game last weekend, that turned into a nightmare, cause the regular mtg rules were so altered, thanks to a certain deck in the table - whenever you tapped a land for mana, you had to tap all your lands, when you tapped mana not on your turn, you'd lose that land, whenever you got mana, you got triple that mana, whenever you had unspent mana on pool, you lost life and so on, so on. Basically, whenever you did something, it had dozen triggers happening and causing a lot of headache keeping track of things. The game was about one and a half hours long, and in the end, thanks to my Disenchant in hand, we managed to all lose the game at the same time, sorry, don't remember the exact interaction... I'm not sure, if it qualifyes as a "game I've enjoyed" but it was very unique experience still - There were no winners in that game, literally.

Commander Discussion / Re: Goad as Pillowfort

I used to have Xantcha, Sleeper Agent EDH deck, the whole idea revolved around Goading opponents and also letting them sink mana into Xantcha, while using undying effects to keep her around. The idea was fun I think, but gameplay-wise maybe I just wasn't the right pilot for the deck, even if you do end up taking down 2 opponents, was hard to finish off the last player.

I preffer regular pillowfort over goading.

Commander Deck Reviews / Looking for EDH deck suggestions
« am: Juli 24, 2023, 04:07:33 Nachmittag »
Hi, so, the title.

Basically I am looking for easy to pilot/easy gameplan commander suggestions or decklists.
I downscaled my EDH deck collection quite a bit (owning 5 decks as of now) cause I came to the conclusion that I'm still more of a 1v1 format player, EDH is fine but I'll always pick constructed over EDH.

I've tried to branch out my decks gameplay/strategy, so no deck is doing the same as the previous.
My current deck's are:

- Kwain, Itinerant Meddler Hug
- Teysa Karlov Aristocrats
- Queen Marchesa Political
- the Gitrog Monster cEDH
- Sythis, Harvest's Hand Enchantress

I'm hoping to find my sixth deck for those one-more-last-game moments where brain is fried, or just to teach/lend a newer player who joins our group - have few friends returning to MTG.

Teysa Karlov: 6
Kwain, Itinerant Meddler: 7
Queen Marchesa: 7
Sythis, Harvest's Hand: 7
the Gitrog Monster: 9

Guess I'm the average my-deck-is-a-7 person I see in reddit and everywhere I play all the time lol.

I fancy x2 battles for my EDH decks.
Invasion of Fiora - Straight into my Queen Marchesa deck.
Invasion of Tolvada - Teysa Karlov's aristocrats.

Other than that I might use something I open during drafts etc, but not really looking specifically at something in particular.

Firstly, not a specific card, but I would recommend adding become a monarch into the deck; by far my most favorite mechanic that just introduces this whole new layer/minigame to the table.

And maybe some cards for consideration:

Temple Bell
Mass Hysteria/Concordant Crossroads
Crescendo of War
Bitter Feud
Crown of Doom
Braids, Conjurer Adept
Karona, False God
Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis
Folio of Fancies
Hypergenesis
Collective Voyage
Tempt with Discovery
Plea for Power

Maybe something will tickle your fancy.

First of all, a sidenote - In out playgroup, we don't break deals. At least nobody has broke one before, but I immagine if it would happen, I would probably just not make deals with said person in the future. You can, however, carefully word your deal. So, when making one, you should carefully listen the terms you agree to.

Scheming Symmetry:
Pretty easy one - You can offer a tutor in exchange for, lets say being not a target for a turn or 2, or if somebody wants to blow something of yours up, you can maybe sweet talk your way out of it with this - I've also been able to use it to deal with problematic card on board (let somebody else tutor for removal, while I search for something for my future set up, and still walk out of it like I helped the table) I am currently running this in my Queen Marchesa deck, prefer it over regular tutors in that specific deck.

Orzhov Advokist:
I used to run it in the same Queen Marchesa deck, but sadly, while I still enjoy the card, it didn't make the cut. I listed in here just so maybe somebody didnt know about it, cause it's still a sweet card.

Loran of the Third Path:
Pretty much the same use as Scheming Symmetry. Not a direct tutor but what do MTG players value above all? Yes, drawing cards, so you can form some sweet alliances (to stab them in the back later on, when the time is right) Again, running this in my Queen Marchesa and also in my Kwain, Itinerant Meddler deck.

Humble Defector:
Only running it in my Marchesa deck. Basic set up is "If I let you have it, will you give it back after activation"

Duelist's Heritage:
Encourages people to attack others cause you can pump up the dmg. If they attack you - they do less dmg, if they attack somebody else, they will do more. Ofcourse you can just pump your own creature while attacking as well, but I mostly play it to start feuds on the field and encourage people to attack each other, not me.

Spurnmage Advocate:
This is probably one of my all time favourites. It discourages people to attack you with value creatures, and at the same time you have access to all graveyards for cards that are dealing with problems on the board. Need to remove a problematic artifact? Sure, hey, player B attack me with your weakest creature, I will remove it so player C can get his Disenchant back from the graveyard etc. The possibilities are almost endless for this card to politic your way around the board.

Exchange of Words:
I am running this in my Kwain deck only, cause it matches the goofy vibe of the commander and said deck. It's a pretty recent addition. I've just found it fun to mess up the board state. You can, of course exchange the texts so that you get a strong ability for yourself, but just "Hey, thats a pretty strong creature player D is having, you want it?" is viable as well if you need somekind of immunity for future turns or need to get some kind of a deal.

It's very situational, right (as is everything else in life lol). I tend to lean more towards all the political decks (Queen Marchesa or Kwain, with a political group hug etc) so generally I am not the one trying to make enemies on the board, but rather let other people take care of themselves while I hang in the backline, maybe fire of a Scheming Symmetry with hints of "remove this piece" etc, but with that being said - I think the Grand Abolisher has to go ASAP. I feel like my decks usually have answer for most things I can think of (ofcourse not concidering actually drawing everything I need all the time) I feel like that ability is way to powerful to stay.

I think it's a sub-game for me - I want to see the lowest possible number I can achieve while making a budget deck, and at the same time to drag it out, I make sub budget change options as well. I have like 10's of decklists for people wanting to start in EDH and most of them I can just gift out as a "Welcome to commander" decks cause they are 15-20€ tops. If they like it they can make my suggested upgrades to rise the power of the deck. I started doing this because in my town, there is no LGS, nearest one is one hour drive away - we do visit it during pre-releases and some other game nights, but I've kinda made a MTG hometown hub at my place and we try to get together to play each Sunday. So, if somebody brings a new friend etc, they can easily get into commander right away without having to order and wait on things. Same goes for drafts etc - I have this "MTG mini shop shelf" that has a shop-like display of boosters, sleeves, deckboxes etc and people can just buy them from me and I will use the money I get to restock the MTG shelf.

Commander Deck Reviews / Re: Touch-Ups on Budget Kumena Merfolk (EDH)

Heya!

I have a Kumena list as well! (It was my first EDH deck, I don't play it as much anymore, cause I'm not that into creature win strategy, I do bust it out when we are doing tribal table or creature heavy games, cause I still love merfolk in general) maybe you can find something of interest.
