Good one, but I prefer to use the card naming template of the elder dragons: Nicol Bolas, the Ravager => Nicol Bolas, the Brawler. And I don't like touching names, I mean that's personal stuff, he must have thought real hard before deciding what shall be his second name. ^^

you may have trouble drawing cards, maybe more effects like vance'blasting cannons, stolen strategy, outpost siege, Avaricious dragon is a tough call but fun if you dump your hand on the battlefield. Oh and IMO territorial hellkite is a fun card and maybe more powerfull than a dragon egg that triggers lathliss only once anyways, or archwing dragon for that matter, and since you are mono red you should definitely keep spawn  of thraxes, it's just rare immediate CA in these decks. furnace of rath/dictate of the twin gods can just win you games more effectively than anything else if you just have a bunch of dragons, insane with dragon tempest oc. Or berseker's onslaught works wonders too! Happy brewing and playing with that! ^^

General Magic / Re: How did I win? Why did I win?

Exactly as you said, Core set is a by nature a weird limited and sealed environement, and this one has two major flaws being aggro/tempo strategies being super strong due to lack of removal and a lot of random totally useless rares/myhtic accompanied by mythic level bomb rares/uncommons like the warleader you mentionned, sleep, herald of faith and skyrider patrol, so yeah flyers are even more kings than usual and white is probably the best color because of better removal, good flyers, star-crowned stag and the dreadfull pegasus courser. Finally I found WB aggro to be one of the best archetypes at prerelease, and all these facts may differ when it comes to draft but we need to keep them in mind for limited which can be faster than sealed.

When I look at your list I see clearly why you won: you had a right combination of all white and black bombs I mentioned before, plus vampire sovereign, and rogue's gloves which is the fuel of such decks, with enough lifegain shenanigans to make the archetype. GG

Indeed you are right, just re-read the announcement here: https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/future-brawl-2018-05-10
Updated the mana to only basics of one type, thanks for the reminder.

Well this is my optimized version of the deck with the cards I already have, but apart from the removal, the mimic and lands it's pretty budget, and there a good options for replacement in the case of removal, you can switch the fatal push for fungal infection/more vicious offering/moment of craving, and vraska's contempt can either become a settle the score or a doomfall(i actually like that card a lot in the maindeck) and hour of glory, the mimic is optional too, can be replaced with arguel's blood fast or blossoming defense and even fungal plots! The sideboard is partly maindeckable and offers tons of those options in fact. Hope that helps you get it at an affordable price ^^

Deck Reviews / [Standard] Is Burn Control possible in standard now?
« il: Aprile 23, 2018, 03:49:19 pm »
Here is a first brush of a different take on mono red in standard, trying to focus more on non-creature source of burn with a slower, harder to deal with, controlling side. There is a lot of room for improvement, and I deliberately left aside more expensive options in the sideboard so budget players may try the main deck without the chandras and hazoreth(but they became cheaper thanks to the challenger deck now). Anyways I think this is worth the try but I would also appreciate it if you have some suggestions/feedback/advice on this, thanks! ^^

You could easily swap the aetherborn in the 2 drop slot with the winding constrictor, synergise better with rishkar and explore anyways, easier to cast than double black also. ^^

why not sphinx of the final word or any other big dumb flyer other than maelstrom djinn which apart from being a 5/6 for 6 mana over two turns and possibly last only 2 turns as well? just wondering this card seems weird to me

maybe you should revise your mana base to complement this perfect mana distribution, I understand that most early drop are green and you want to start with green but with this particular build especially if you want to end the game with tempest caller and play 6 non merfolk blue spells a better spread of 12 green/10 blue source would be more adapted, btw I tried this mana base and got screwed often with blue sources for spells(since unclaimed territory doesn't work) so I strongly reccommend it. Nice brewing to everyone, merfolk is pretty hard to polish imo.

Cut hazoret, you are playing midrange not aggro and you need more card advantage like the raptor provides, plus your 4 CMC curve is already filled to the brim. Instead of the 2 hazoret you can add consistency by playing the 4th regisaur and 4th drover of the mighty, if you are concerned about having a mana sink, I think you two rhonas will do the job, more often than not you will be happier to cast your tyrants if you are flooding anyway.
You don't need the energy cubs, since you want to go higher with ramping 2 drops.
Carnage tyrant and Nissa play a similar role, as they are excellent cards against control, so it's up to you if you want to add a 3rd tyrant to cut the nissa or not(which is not that usefull for what you are trying to do anyways).
I'm surprised you did not include savage stomp, a better choice than the ballista in a dinosaur deck, and since you are short on removals you might need a playset

In the end I suggest that you just cut the energy from the deck, for the simple reason that dinosaur tribal doesn't need energy since it's already a block constructed deck and energy is parasitic as a mechanic, the only real upside you get of the energy here is harnessed lightning and bristling hydra, but do you really need that when you can just savage stomp for 5 damage when you have a dino in play with 4 power or cast an uncounterrable trampling hexproof threat instead?

Deck Reviews / Re: [Standard] Grixis God Control

Chandra is simply insane in this deck most of the time I played it on turn 4 or 5 and use her +1 to cast a burn spell on the only creature I allowed my opponent to play, which leaves her at 5 loyalty on an empty board, then she slowly gives me sweet ramp or card advantage with either one of her +1, if I have 2/3 answers in my hand she gets to seven and ultimate to death my opponent, which happened quite often really, especially against midrange. So definitely an early game play but only if the situation looks clean of course, but it depends on the kind of deck you are facing oc. Against mono red aggro and combo you don't want to cast her though. ^^'

Invasive surgery is actually very situational but it has a lot of utility in my meta: against mill oc to exile the startled awake since thanks to their mill I'll have delirium; against ramp deck sometimes I'll have delirium with some cycling lands by turn 5 or 4 when they cast their hour of promise, and even without it a one mana counter to hour of promise is worth the opportunity cost; lastly ALL black decks side in discard like transgress the mind against me, which I hate, so it can spare me some excruciable pain.

Lastly the nimble obstructionist is as you said very good in any control matchup since if it resolves it will eat away their life more quicly than ours, and for cards like this you don't need to look at what it can counter specifically, although westvale abbey comes to mind, but rather the flexibility of the card makes it just awesome on its own, but yeah only against slow control or combo decks, monument decks and ramp decks.

Thanks for your output. :)

Again. One commit // memory in the sideboard can ruin the mill deck plan in a fun and easy way if they milled it themselves. ^^ Control has it tough these days in standard, which is the sign of the diversity of the unstable format right now, even though the aggressive decks'dominance may be part of it, it is still a healthier format than before, aggro being a thing at the beginning is nothing new. Hopefully the main deck is already rotationproof, the side will be in constant change afterwards though. X)
