Mainly played it at fnm, never played against mono blue, but mono red wasn't that scary after you've gain life with hydra or lifelink creatures.
For the phoenixs you always have a bigger hydra, so thats not a problem.
Control is a bit harder but you just have to stick little threats and try to boost them for little chips of damage.
