Commander Discussion / Re: Fix mono white in EDH
« em: Fevereiro 12, 2021, 08:36:11 pm »
I understand that Stax, or other game lengthening effects, is considered "unfair" or against the Social Contracts a lot of people have. But here's the way I look at it, replace your normal ramp slots with efficient rocks/Smothering Tithe, and you should be golden. And slowing down/preventing other players from doing as much each turn buys you turns. This is a very powerful thing, same as Cyclonic Rift a Table where you have been trailing or your opponents have been going off faster, it buys you turns. Which is an incredibly undervalued tactic.

Not saying anyone on this forum is like this, but going by Social Contracts, which a lot of Mono-White's Strengths primarily fall under, isn't a reason to say White needs to be Fixed. It works, just a lot of people don't like it when it does. And what I was also trying to point out is that with all of the very powerful cards at Mono-Whites disposal, imagine how much the color could become broken with "Fixes" like more consistent, nonrestrictive, ramp and draw. It would be the same kind of broken as giving Mono-Green the kind of Board Control as White has, or Mono-Blue for that matter...

I have to say, I have been a Mono-White Fan for as long as I can remember, and I've been playing for going on almost 24 years. I will concede that White does have some weaknesses in the ramp and draw departments, without the help of artifacts/lands of course, and is yet to be a cEDH color. But White is probably one of the strongest when it comes to passive, and sometimes active, board control. Plus the support to back it up via creatures/indestructible. Yes, White can be built as an aggro color, but it truly shines when built to control.

I have three Mono-White decks, that when I any of them out, I get unanimous groans from the table:
- Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite (Stax)
- Darien, King of Kjeldor (Self Pain, Combat Control, Tokens)
- Rune-Tail, Kitsune Ascendant (Pillowfort, Passive/Active Damage Reduction, Lifegain)

Ill end with, I don't think that White needs to be fixed. On that same note, nor is it currently all that weak. I think that if Mono-White got a lot more Draw and Ramp, it would very quickly become one of the top colors in magic. I think WotC might understand this, actively or subconsciously, and don't want to break the color.

Deck Comments / Re: Muldrotha - Reanimator & Card Draw - Comments

Looking over the deck, It looks fairly solid. There are a few things I notice that might be improved upon. The one that pops out is your lands that hurt you to use. With my experience with Muldrotha, the Gravetide, unless you have some lifegain to offset the damage your dealing to yourself, the deck could run slow enough where you could just be quickening your own loss.  And though you have an ok amount of ramp/rocks, not many sac themselves or others for further benefit, which can be useful if you find yourself with a slow/crappy turn. There are a few more things, but your playgroup and playstyle might filter some of it out.
I have a Muldrotha deck that has an 80% win rate at my LGS and playgroups that you can use, if you want, for inspiration...

Goblin War Strike and Mob Justice? Both are good alternate Win cons if someone plays a pillow-fort style deck.

If I may suggest Ugin, the Ineffable. It'll help with casting your morph spells.

If I may, I have a similar deck based on Damage prevention and Life Gain. I love the deck and the Budget aspect of it. I have some ideas for edits for my deck. You get a LIKE from me.

I'll be honest, I had no idea that "Legendary" wasn't a type that was effected by Semblance Anvil...
I appreciate the knowledge, and will keep it in mind. The card is a smidgen less useful now, but still useful enough to keep.

I appreciate the suggestions. And the Lands I do like, I just need to get ahold of them first.  And though I only run 34 Lands, I have found that getting creatures out hasn't been a problem. With the combination of Mana rocks, and lands like Temple of the False God and Orzhov Basilica, and Mana reduction, my avg CMC in most games drops to closer to 2.7 - 3.0 (my fav example is imprinting Athreos, God of Passage onto Semblance Anvil reducing Legendary, Enchantment, and Creature spells by 2)

The Chromatic Lantern is in there to speed up the Mana fixing, I also have a personal preference not to run "Pain" Mana producers, as I call them.

I do have an Isamaru, Hound of Konda, and he was in initially, but found that he kinda fell short after only 2-3 other creatures are played. Most of the Legendaries in the deck (aside of a couple of spot holders) hold onto their usefulness going into mid-late game.
The spot removal was chosen to take out almost any threat, not just creatures and don't hold much necessity in the deck and may later be removed all together.

And lastly, Urza's Ruinous Blast was defiantly a card I wanted to keep when first building the deck, but was eventually cut due to these ideas:
- It wont get rid of Plainswalkers.
- It wont effect Commanders, which most decks run around.
- If someone follows up with their own board wipe, I've lost all my support enchantments and artifacts for the rest of the game, and that will slow the deck considerably.  I'd rather keep my supporting cards on the field even with a board wipe, because I can get a lot of it back with the deck's grave recursion (even if someone runs artifact/enchantment destruction).
And on that note, I have found that I can allow my creatures to die as long as they can kill other creatures (ie Deathtouch) and easily bring them back.

Again, I do appreciate the suggestions and you've given me things to think about.

Deck Comments / Re: Friend's deck: Gain and Drain Contenders - Comments
« em: Outubro 11, 2019, 08:39:25 pm »
I appreciate the feedback, this deck is a friend's that ive been editing with their cards in mind and a total budget in mind. The deck started out with 300-ish cards not including the basic lands and Ive edited it down to this. My friend enjoys the bounce lands and though it's Oloro, they still do not like shocks (says that you shouldn't need to sacrifice life for mana). We are still going over the mana base so I'll suggest the Isolated Chapel, Drowned Catacomb, and the Glacial Fortress to them and see what they think (I made a basic land package I would start with, with the intention of editing after the bulk of the deck was finished). Norn's Annex is preferable to my friend as it hurts non-white players and still requires mana for white players. Plus, being an artifact, its harder to destroy than a creature (our playgroup plays with plenty of spot creature removal).

Hey, its your buddy. I like the deck. I see only 2 real win cons other than swinging big. There are some issues in our playgroup i can see. But overall ill give it a 7/10.

General Magic / A question about Superfriends EDH
« em: Julho 11, 2019, 03:17:03 pm »
Ok, so I have a few people in my playgroup and LGS regulars that like and have built Superfriends. But almost none of them play Honor-Worn Shaku.

Now I think it's a wonderful card in decks that run a lot of Legendary permanents. Am I wrong in assuming this?

I want to hear your opinions on this...is it a Mana rock in those types of decks? Or am I just crazy?

Knight of the Reliquary is outside Oloro's color identity.

When I stopped, I was still trying to figure out a good combo with the third ability. It could just be an infinite mana sink, but I wanted something different. But Urza's strength comes from the stax part. I'll try to finish it up, just for you.

If I may, Training Grounds + Pili-Pala goes Infinite Mana through Urza, Lord High Artificer second ability. And though its a slower play, Conjurer's Closet will provide a steady stream of ever growing Constructs that could be used for Mana.

More times then not I love playing more then Building. But from time to time, just sitting down with just an idea, flipping through my giant collection, and building an EDH deck from scratch is the perfect thing to de-stress. That and modifying decks when a new set hits is always fun.

General Magic / Re: which is better ?
« em: Junho 11, 2019, 06:52:24 am »
And though Nevermore is defiantly a better card, if your playing against someone who runs Enchantment/Artifact destruction, it does relatively nothing to slow them down once its gone.

Neither does Declaration of Naught.

Unless (I hate repeating myself) you choose an opponent's Commander. Commander Tax can be crippling and most times is a deterrent for most people to cast their Commander until they draw into a destruction spell, which STILL slows them down for several Turns (same desired effect as Nevermore, but for 2 CMC instead of 3).  I mean, it makes the most sense in a format where 90% of the decks out there revolve around a card you can see on Turn 0.

And again (I hate repeating myself) it depends on the format, I agree that Pithing Needle is far better in Formats like Modern, etc. and that Nevermore defiantly has its uses and is better in than both in some circumstances. I just prefer Declaration of Naught.
