Deck Reviews / [Modern] Infinite Goblins
« em: Julho 22, 2022, 08:47:55 pm »
https://deckstats.net/decks/160540/2643322-infinite-goblins

Looking for two-card combos featuring Intruder Alert, I found both Krenko, Mob Boss and Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker to be great fits. Both being goblins and Krenko being a staple of most goblin decks I decided to build izzet goblins with that combo element.

I was not sure at all about the goblin tribal part of this combo deck, so feedback is much appreciated as always ^^

PS - Absolute dream curve with a ton of luck:

T1: Any of our 1-drop goblins
T2: Conspicuous Snoop
T3: Intruder Alarm + Kiki-Jiki or Krenko on top of the library, combo off and swing for lethal

I don't play modern so i don't know if this would be good enough, but Ravenous Squirrel would grow big from your game plan (could be a finisher, but dies to removal)and can draw cards(for 3 mana and a sacrifice of an artifact or creature) to dig for your combo.

I don't know modern enough, but the card might fit your deck.

Yeah it was in my first version of the list. But I removed it while streamlining and adding more control cards.

Thanks for the feedback ^^

I swapped out some stuff for a playset of Inquisition of Kozilek and Vessel of Nascency. I also added two copies of Trail of Crumbs, for more food interaction and card draw.

Chatterfang, Squirrel General was a really great call, so I had to add that, too, just like Gravecrawler, which really is a better fit than Animation Module in the current iteration of the list.

With the changes I made combo 1 is still intact, as well as combo 2 (with only two Academy Manufactor in the deck it's going to be even harder to assemble it, though). The Cat/Oven interaction also managed to survive the restructuring.

With all those token generating effects (and me keeping Desecrated Tomb for now) in the deck I wonder if Woodland Champion would be a good idea. It would be very large very fast, once an engine is assembled, however I don't really know what to swap out for it. I could remove Desecrated Tomb for it but I think I'd pick tomb over champion, as many small bodies are less prone to removal than one large hitter.

Another option that I am not quite sure about is Zulaport Cutthroat / Disciple of the Vault. They would turn the infinite loops into OTKs and the cat/oven combo into a much faster clock. But again; I've got no clue what to cut for that.

And I changed Desecrated Tomb to Zulaport Cutthroat, for direct damage, turning combo 1 into an insta-kill and buffing the cat/oven combo.

So this is my first attempt at a budget sacrifice-engine-value list, and my first attempt at building a deck in a long time so I wanted to try to get some feedback.

I tried building around two infinite combos I happened to find:

Combo 1:
Carrion Feeder + Animation Module + Pitiless Plunderer for an infinite loop, as Pitiless Plunderer allows us to always pay for Animation Module s trigger, so we always get a servo token to sacrifice.

Combo 2:
Carrion Feeder / Woe Strider + Cauldron Familiar + Pitiless Plunderer + Academy Manufactor for an infinite loop resulting in infinite damage; Pitiless Plunderer will trigger, but also get us a food token, because of Academy Manufactor, which we can use to get Cauldron Familiar back.

Another interaction I built around is the Cat/Oven combo with Cauldron Familiar and Witch's Oven.

What are your thoughts on this list? Do you think there is anything I should/could improve? Any obvious oversights from my side?

Any feedback would be much appreciated :D

Edit: Found a third combo in the deck

Woe Strider + Ravenous Squirrel + Animation Module + Pitiless Plunderer

General Magic / Returning from a break
« em: Julho 17, 2022, 04:37:54 pm »
Hello people of the internet,

I'm planning on returning to playing again when I'm back from holidays, after a break that started right around the release of strixhaven/modern horizons 2. And I wondered if anything noteworthy happened in the year I was gone. Any major format that broke again? Metagame shifts in modern that happened while I was gone? Has the power- /complexity creep stopped? Any more secret lairs as controversial as the Walking Dead one?

I just wondered if anybody was in a mood to wrap up what I missed, of course I'm aware this forum isn't my personal newsletter, but I thought asking wouldn't do any harm ^^

Edit: Does anybody know what happened to Prowess and the Heliod Combo Decks in modern? They totally dominated in modern when I left, now I cant even find them on goldfishs metagame site.

I have to agree with Lusunu with most of their arguments.
Although this one I don't feel is correct.

right-first thing I thought to myself when I look at this deck is "what the hell is this".
A deck with all 5 colors in 60 card format is not a good idea. It is occasionally tolerable in commander because there it's slow enough that you can afford to burn a couple turns looking for the right colors of mana, but in any other format, sheesh. Not the play.

There's good 5-color decks in modern right now (Niv to Light and the Scapeshift variants) , but with the difference that they have a streamlined gameplan and run an extremely tight manabase of shocks, fetches etc. which isn't to be found here, which makes a 5-color deck very inconsistent.

But as mentioned I have to agree with Lunsunu, you need to get an idea of what your deck is trying to win with, as this seems a lot like just a pile of cards.

General Magic / Re: Unmarked Grave in Budget Modern Reanimator

This is definitely an interesting quandry.

I guess the most important question is: How often do you find yourself without an appropriate card in your graveyard?

The looting / self mill available to this deck is obviously pretty formidable. Do you find that that is usually sufficient? By the time you have your reanimation spell ready, is there usually a strong target?

If the answer is yes, then I'd say it's probably not worth it.

Tutors are obviously powerful, but your looting effects also play well into your dredge cards and provide an engine.

How would you feel about splashing white and playing Unburial Rites? Unmarked grave being able to find you a bomb to reanimate or a reanimate spell might make it more worthwhile, but then you have to contend with reliably hitting a third splash colour.

I don't feel like I am confronted with not having gas in the yard too often. And even if that's the case, I am able to survive quite long until I do hit something.

I guess the upsides would now be reduced to: This is a nice toolbox card. If there's any (I didn't look) hate cards on bodies that can go for beatdown, it could be quite nice to for example get something that disables life gain, when playing against Heliod Company.
The other upside is: I can quickly recover from getting my card exiled. I got my only card in yard exiled? No worries, another one is on its way.
But I don't feel like that's worth sacrificing my looting-gameplan, as it just feels too conistent.

I also thought about including Unburial Rites, but I feel like going for 2 and a half colors would either exceed my budget or be awkward as hell with the lands I usually play (Reveal- and Checklands).

Thanks for the suggestions and thoughts :D

General Magic / Unmarked Grave in Budget Modern Reanimator
« em: Maio 21, 2021, 09:18:00 am »
Yesterday some cards were spoiled for Modern Horizons and one of them was a fixed Entomb called Unmarked Grave. It reads just as Entomb but with three major differences: It went from instant speed to sorcery speed, the mana cost went from B to 1B and it could only Entomb non-legendary creatures.

The non-legendary restriction might render this unplayable in "competetive" reanimator (for the few tier 2-3 reanimator lists played in modern) as it can't get Griselbrand and such bombs.

In my budget modern reanimator deck this is different as all my threats are non-legends anyway, but I am not sure if Unmarked Grave would add a level of clunkyness I don't want.
Normally I just draw a load of cards with Cathartic Reunion and Merchant of the Vale, find a reanimation spell with them and simultaneously I discard some dredgers, eventually milling a threat to reanimate.
These discard-and-draw spells really do everything I want at once.

So now I am asking myself: Do I even want Unmarked Graves in there and if thats true, what should I exclude for it?
Let me know if I'm talking nonsense or if I'm right to say that this might not be an automatic include.

Here's the list:

Oops you're right, Damping Sphere would shut that off. But I'm not sure if your deck really needs 4 copies of Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx anyway, as it is legendary.

In my decks I only run 1-ofs of legendary lands as it really hurts to miss a land-drop because of the legend rule.

And you also have to deliberate if shutting down their tron lands is worth disabling your Nykthos. I personally would go for that deal, but I again don't really know if your deck needs a Nykthos on board to function.

I know you didn't request suggestions for the main deck, but I think I have to say something about Didn't Say Please. I don't feel like it fits into the self-mill plan with Thassa's Oracle, something like Mana Leak or Archmage's Charm would be in a better place there.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't feel like Leyline of Anticipation serves a real purpose, I feel you could swap it out for something more useful.

And also I think you're right to say that a bit more draw spells would be a good fit.

In the sideboard I would find room for more Grafdigger's Cage to increase the likelyhood of you drawing one and some Damping Sphere against Tron.

I don't play the format in which those cards would become legal, but I would be very unhappy if I had to play a Warhammer or The Walking Dead card in my modern deck, just because the alternatives aren't as good.

On one hand I would want my deck to be as competitive as possible as long it remains executing the gameplan I first anticipated, but on the other hand I wouldn't like to be "forced" by WotC to play with a Warhammer card in my MtG deck.

I am just happy that it's not coming to the format I play (for now) so I don't have to think about making this decision of my deck either being as competitive or as "magic" as possible.

Sovereign's Bite insted of Bump in the Night  or the 1 mana difference matters?

I am not sure if I want to run those "burn" spells at all. I've now got Fauna Shaman instead of Summoner's Pact, which is why I now run Golgari Brownscale and Big Game Hunter instead of additional damage. Golgari Brownscale still burns the opponent I guess. This deck is still in the working so that could change over the course of the next week or so.

https://deckstats.net/decks/160540/2024595-turbo-vito-2-0

I'm still on my quest to find a at least slightly modern playable Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose deck. My previous attempt (Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose + Oketra's Last Mercy + a low life total) failed, so I'm thrilled to try to make this work.

The combo is, to resolve a Nourishing Shoal exiling Autochthon Wurm while we have Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose on board. I hope that this will have T4 win potential (we'll see as I test it).

I'd be very happy for suggestions and feedback :D

General Magic / Counterspell in Modern?
« em: Abril 08, 2021, 06:59:05 pm »
There's been some unconfirmed leaks about Modern Horizons 2. One of them was Counterspell. Now I was wondering: What do I want to cut for Counterspell in my control deck or do I want to run it at all?

Logic Knot seems obvious, but I really don't want to get rid of Drown in the Loch, as it also is removal, Archmage's Charm, as it also is card draw, nor do I want to cut Cryptic Command, because it's just a swiss army knive of a counterspell.

Am I too picky, or is this just a deck that doesn't need a playset of the original counterspell?
