Deck Reviews / [Standard] Boros Atletico
« em: Outubro 11, 2018, 11:19:36 pm »
Boros Atletico

Tried to keep all creatures red+white, like the Atletico de Madrid football team, just for flavor. Finally added a white manager.

Plays cheap and quick creatures (bigger with Guildmages' Forum) and reinforces them with Mentor.

Still testing (and no sideboard yet)

Revision 12

Added/removed cards:
+1 Woolly Razorback
-1 (SB) Ixalan's Binding
+1 (SB) Nevermore

Changed amounts:
+1 Mangara of Corondor
-1 Plains
-1 Wakestone Gargoyle

Added one Woolly Razorback, for serious life gain and discouraging land attackers (took out one Wakestone Gargoyle).

Trying to decide between a second Mangara of Corondor for extra removal or one Masako the Humorless, for blocking with our mana dudes (and flashing it for one surprise blocking)... or a second Wurmcalling.

Revision 26

Added/removed cards:
-1 Trostani's Summoner
+1 Grove of the Guardian
+1 Mangara of Corondor

Changed amounts:
-1 Acidic Slime
+1 Eerie Interlude
-1 Temple of Silence

Substituted one Acidic Slime with one Mangara of Corondor, for cheaper and more flexible removal. It can only be abused with Angel of Condemnation and not Conjurer's Closet, though

Took out Trostani's Summoner - too costly - and replaced it with a third Eerie Interlude.

Added Grove of the Guardian to benefit from Trostani, Selesnya's Voice token copy ability.

Revision 11

Added/removed cards:
-3 Crib Swap
+1 Angel of Condemnation
+1 Mangara of Corondor
+1 Thousand-Year Elixir
+1 (SB) Spear of Heliod

Changed amounts:
+1 (Main) -1 (SB) Archetype of Endurance
-1 Wakestone Gargoyle

Took out Crib Swap as removal and substituted it with Mangara of Corondor.

Added Thousand-Year Elixir to immediately use mana dorks and abuse Mangara of Corondor, and replaced one Wakestone Gargoyle with an Angel of Condemnation for repeatable removal.

Promoted Archetype of Endurance from sideboard to main, allowing Angel of Condemnation to remove creatures on its own.

Revision 25

Added/removed cards:
-2 Cultivate
-1 Kodama's Reach
+3 Sakura-Tribe Elder
-1 (SB) Summoning Trap
+1 (SB) Leyline of Lifeforce

Changed amounts:
+1 Swamp
-1 Treetop Village

Replaced Cultivate with Sakura-Tribe Elder.

Main goal for Cultivate & Sakura-Tribe Elder is ramp, and chump blocking on initial turns is more relevant than the extra land.

Revision 9

Added/removed cards:

Revision 5

Added/removed cards:
-4 Perimeter Captain
-3 Tower Defense
-3 Wall of Tanglecord
+1 Arch of Orazca
+4 Axebane Guardian
+1 Saltcrusted Steppe
+1 Zetalpa, Primal Dawn
-1 (SB) Gelatinous Genesis
-1 (SB) No-Dachi
-1 (SB) Silklash Spider
+1 (SB) Soul of New Phyrexia
+1 (SB) Summoning Trap

Changed amounts:
-1 Assault Formation
+1 Genesis Wave
-1 Plains
+1 Primal Command
+1 Stalwart Shield-Bearers
+1 Wakestone Gargoyle
+1 Wall of Reverence
+1 (SB) Ratchet Bomb

Added huge emphasis on ramp, through Axebane Guardian. And added Zetalpa, Primal Dawn as extra wincon.

Deck is now much less dependent on Assault Formation, instead quickly reaching enough mana for Zetalpa, Primal Dawn, Artisan of Kozilek, Wurmcalling or Genesis Wave.

Zetalpa, Primal Dawn works better than Artisan of Kozilek and is also reinforced by Assault Formation, hitting with 16 each turn (2x8). It's legendary, so I'm just including one.

Revision 20

Added/removed cards:
-3 Atzocan Archer
-2 Caves of Koilos
-2 Death Frenzy
-1 Garruk's Packleader
-2 Llanowar Wastes
+1 Sunblast Angel
+2 Temple of Plenty
+2 Temple of Silence
-1 (SB) Tormod's Crypt
+1 (SB) Aura of Silence
+1 (SB) Ixalan's Binding
+1 (SB) Nihil Spellbomb

Changed amounts:
+1 Angel of Condemnation
+2 (Main) -1 (SB) Consume the Meek
+1 Cultivate
-1 Forest
+1 Ravenous Chupacabra
+1 Treetop Village
-1 (SB) Hex Parasite

Big change to creatures to make the deck more consistent. All main drops are now 3-ofs.

Deck starts now dropping creatures only at 4-mana.

Ramp and number of lands increased to cover for that, and 2 Treetop Village added for initial turns survival.

This allows us to use Consume the Meek as an instant one-sided boardwipe.

Mana base moved again towards scry, to help getting our lands and ramp. We don't have 1-drops and we may be short of lives when we get to 4-mana.

Revision 4

Added/removed cards:
-3 Angelic Wall
-1 Dusk // Dawn
-1 Ulamog's Crusher
+1 Artisan of Kozilek
+3 Wakestone Gargoyle
+1 Wall of Reverence
+1 (SB) No-Dachi

Changed amounts:
-1 (SB) Ratchet Bomb

Wakestone Gargoyle instead of Angelic Wall makes the deck much less dependent on hitting an Assault Formation (and makes attacking much cheaper)

On second thought, I might give a chance to Wakestone Gargoyle instead of Angelic Wall, and taking out then Dusk // Dawn.

I'll play test it and see how it goes.

Dusk // Dawn is sometimes a dead card against aggro small creatures, and being able to block & kill before Assault Formation can be nice... and to attack with a 3/4 flyer once you have stablished your defense, without the need for Assault Formation. It also makes payment cheaper for alpha strikes.

Thanks !

Thanks a lot for the suggestions.

First of all, you are right. I have a tendency to "EDH" my decks, though the main cards are 3s or 4s:

4 Perimeter Captain
3 Wall of Tanglecord
3 Angelic Wall
4 Overgrown Battlement

and of course

4 Assault Formation

Regarding your suggestions, I already have 2 Stalwart Shield Bearers. Order of the Stars is too weak to attack later and Wall of Shards too costly.

Regarding Wall of Swords & Wakestone Gargoyle, I wanted to keep defenders under 3 power, so they won't be hit by Dusk // Dawn. The idea is to hit with toughness, not power. This also renders Wakestone Gargoyle ability almost useless.

Wall of Omens would be great, probably substituting the Perimeter Captains, but in my group play we have a rule to enhance homebrewing - only cards less than a certain price are allowed (2 euro, around $2,5 - shop prices). It limits your options, but encourages you to find alternatives. That's why the deck is so cheap.

And this rules out Wall of Omens, all your planeswalkers suggestions, and Shalai, Voice of Plenty.

And also a great card for a GWB version of the deck: Doran, the Siege Tower. It could be great with Treefolk Harbinger as tutor (but then, you would need a non-defender, high-toughness version of the cards):

Nyx-Fleece Ram

Lingering Souls + Tower Defense

In fact, if you are thinking about an EDH version, it should definitely be your commander.

Thanks for the feedback !

Walls can't attack

Selesnya Defender deck

Defender deck with Assault Formation as main wincon.

Deck tries to fill the board with big & cheap defender creatures until it can cast an Assault Formation and swing with huge creatures for the win. Assault Formation effect is reinforced by Brave the Sands and Primal Rage.

Perimeter Captain & Angelic Wall / Wall of Tanglecord for initial blocking and life gain. Overgrown Battlement for huge ramp.

Tower Defense doubles as extra defense and wincon once Assault Formation is on the battlefield.

Stirring Wildwood & Treetop Village for hitting on initial turns and after board wipes.

Once you are able to generate serious mana, you can use Wurmcalling & Gelatinous Genesis (sideboard) as alternate win conditions, together with Grove of the Guardian. Or cast Genesis Wave to fill the board with creatures and maybe hit an Assault Formation.

Removal with Crib Swap & Declaration in Stone.

Dusk // Dawn for one-sided boardwipe (and graveyard recursion).

(all cards kept under $3)

Comments & suggestions are more than welcome.
