Abzan Blue Pilgrim

Rhino, Anafenza, Kalitas, Advocate, Ayle, Seeker of the Way. 4 Charm, 4 Counter spells, 2 Truths, 2 D Command, 2 Gideon, Cut, Ruinous,

Any suggestions to this deck?  The mama is not perfect, but it is the best I could do with the money I had available.  I've played this deck or something very similar for the past 3 weeks and got mixed results until last night when I added 2 seekers that really stabilized my life enough to give me time to get the 6 lands Advocate needs before he and the man lands can take over and close it out.  I would probably replace the Hissing Q with another Vent, but there are also plenty of situations in which I would be willing to attack into a board full of creatures with a 2/2 or 4/4 death touch creature and see if they call my bluff.

Any feedback is welcome!

Abzan Blue Eldrazi

Abzan splashing blue for counter magic and colorless for Thought Knot Seer and Reality Smasher.

Traditional Abzan Creatures such as Warden of the First Tree, Anafenza the Foremost and Siege Rhino are, of course, still as good as ever allowing you to hit fast, hard and early.  Anafenza keeps your opponent's graveyard from becoming a delve/rally engine and with Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet the deck now has another creature with the same ability, but better.  When a non token creature you opponent controls dies it is exiled AND you get a 2/2 Zombie token.  For 2B: Sacrifice a Zombie or Vampire to put 2 +1/+1 counters on Kalitas...Oh, and he has lifelink.. Abzan gets another HUGE value creature from Oath of the Gate watch in Sylvan Advocate the 2/3 Elf Ally with Vigilance for only 1G, but that's not all.  Once you have 6 lands Sylvan Advocate AND land creatures all get +2/+2.  If you have 2 Sylvan Advocates in play your land creatures get +4/+4 etc.  He is also an Elf and an Ally so he fits in both tribal decks perfectly.

There were two Eldrazi creatures that stood out above all the rest in Thought Knot Seer and Reality Smasher.  We are already in four colors and getting the colorless mana needed by turn 4 can be a little tricky, but after a lot of testing, tweaking and testing again I you can consistently get green, white and black/blue by turn 3 for your Abzan spells and counter magic.  The colorless mana comes from the 3 Caves of Koilos and 3 Llanowar Wastes.  These pain lands makeup 25% of the mana base though they can't be fetched.  The odds of getting one of the 6 colorless producers by turn 4 are pretty good.  I play 9 fetch lands which increases the likely hood of drawing into a colorless land slightly higher each time you fetch a basic or battle land.  Really, without at least 6-8 fetch lands and 2-4 battle lands it would be hard to play a 4 color deck let alone a 4 color + Colorless deck. I have found 10 fetch lands to be around the maximum you can run without running out of lands to fetch for or taking away a place for one of our colorless mana producers.  Though it is not in this deck list 2-4 shambling vents should be incorporated to take full advantage of the Advocate's ability.  I took them out to make the deck faster and to get the colorless mana I needed more reliably, but the vents need to be in the deck plain and simple.

Gideon, Ally of Zendikar is such a great planes walker I don't think I need to go into detail about why he is so good.

Sorin, Solemn Visitor is awesome with his +1 ability, but when you pair his Vampire token generating ability with Kalitas' +1/+1 counter ability Sorin becomes better than ever.

I added Narset because she lets you draw cards for free much of the time, cast spells with rebound and an obtainable ultimate that shuts off your opponent from casting non-creature spells for the rest of the game pretty much locks it up for you.  There is still a lot of testing to be done, but it feels like she is nothing but good things can come from playing her at 4 mana and entering with 6 loyalty.

This deck likes the early game, loves the mid game, but if you don't close out a game against a control deck or ramp deck you are in for an uphill battle.  Another copy of Painful Truths and/or Treasure Cruise can be added to help keep you hand full.  After turn 6 you start casting spells faster than you can draw them.

Abzan for Zendikar

Abzan with some personal flavor.  Play set of Siege Rhino for obvious reasons.  Seeker of the way to gain life and is commonly the center of combat tricks such as the become immense.  One addition that is not commonly found is the 2 copies of Mighty Leap to give your Rhinos or other big creatures flying and +2/+2 to get over a wide board of blockers to end the game.  2 each of undergrowth champion and woodland wanderer.  The champion is an exceptional blocker as it doesn't take damage so long as it has counters from landfall triggers.  It also can become a huge threat especially with a fetch land triggering landfall twice in one turn.  Woodland Wanderer is very easy to cast with 3 color to make a 5/5 trample and vigilance creature that some would argue is better than Siege Rhino as a creature not taking into account the 6 point life swing that the Rhino brings upon entering the battle field.  Still, nice to attack without tapping and trample on a 5/5 is great for 4 mana.  1 copy of Dragonlord Dromoka to strike fear in the control players.  It must be dealt with immediately or a 10 point life swing will be the result on the next turn.  I considered adding Surrak the Hunt Caller to give it haste, but this deck is already a little heavy on the 4 drop spot.  2 Knight of the White Orchid allows you to get a Canopy Vista as it is a "Plains" card if you have less lands that your opponent when it is cast.  A 2/2 first striker for 2 mana is pretty decent on its own.  Ob Nixilis is the planes walker that is perfect for this deck.  2 copies allow you to draw cards, which is critical for Abzan decks.  After 5 turns without a Read the Bones or Abzan Charm you will likely be down to 1 or 2 cards in hand. Ob Noxious also lets you destroy a creature.  You can look at him as an Abzan Charm that stays on the board.  Lastly, there is utter end.  I have not yet decided if 1, 2 or 3 copies is the magic number.  This build has 1 copy, but I commonly play 2 with 1 more in the sideboard.  It is not hero's downfall, but for one more mana it also deals with enchantments, hanger back walkers in addition to all creatures and planes walkers.

Abzan Sneak Attack

Aggro Abzan value creatures early.  Rhino and Anafenza in the mid game.  Plenty of removal.  Seeker and Rhino combined with Become Immense can put the game away quickly with Seeker's life gain and Rhino's trample.  Even if they have blockers Rhinos are going to hit for a ton regardless and seeker will gain 9 life and take out a blocker if there is one.

Abzan Harsh Mid-Range

This version of Abzan I haven't fully tested, but in theory the goal is to beat you opponents with the traditional Abzan value creatures early in Fleecemane Lion and seeker of the waySeeker's lifelink trigger is very important as it keeps you afloat against aggressive aggro decks until they run out of steam and you can get your Rhinos and other 4 and 5 CMC out on the battle field.

Where this deck is a little different from the norm is the 2 Become Immense and 1 Titanic Growth I added.  This deck doesn't utilize the graveyard except for the Delve mechanic used to cast Become ImmenseTitanic Growth is only 2 CMC for +4/+4 until end of turn so both of these are easy to cast and won't strain your mana that you will need to cast more creatures.  Rhinos and seekers are extremely good to pump for because the Rhino is going to crash through blockers for big damage and wipe out opponents creatures at the same time.  Seekers would gain at minimum 9 life after the prowess and lifelink triggers.

Another twist I added was hangarback walker, Abzan Ascendancy and Harsh Sustenance.  Hangarback and Abzan Ascendancy both create flying tokens and can accumulate very quickly.  Harsh Sustenance takes what is hopefully a very full board of creatures and deals damage to you opponent for every creature you control.  Even if the number of creatures is not super high when the walker dies you are still getting that much more damage with Harsh Sustenance.

Plains walkers: Sorin and Ajani, Mentor of Heros (Elspeth also makes some appearances, but I only run 2 of the three in the main board.) Sorkin and Ajani are my first choices because they are cheaper than Elspeth and aid in life gain or adding +1/+1 counters.  Elspeth is a perfect fit too if you aren't playing against an aggressive aggo deck in that Elspeth creates 3 new creatures each turn making Harsh Sustenance that much more HARSH.

Abzan Life Gain Counter aggro midrange

Use life link and life gain cards such as seeker of the way, courser of kruphix, dragon lord dromoka and palace siege while at the same time building those small creatures into monsters with counters from citadel siege, hardened scales, Abzan Charm, Dromoka's Command and top it off with two creatures that make the whole thing come together.. Siege Rhino's life gain and trample make blocking them nearly pointless with more than 2 counters and Avatar of the resolute with reach and trample who only costs GG to be a 3/2, but with the added bonus of a counter for each creature with a counter it doesn't matter when they are put in play.  Late in the game they can be 8/7 trampling reachers for just GG, or 3/2 trampling reachers on turn 2 that you will build on.  Hero's downfall, Ultimate Price, Bile Blight and an utter end will keep you safe from most of the monsters you will see and Dromoka's Command and Abzan Charms will give you what you need no matter what your situation (Removal, more cards, more counters, prevent damage.. I have 4 Abzan Charms and 2 Dromoka's Command, but a 3rd Dromoka's command would be nice to have even at the expense of one of your charms..
