I'm looking for a way to build an EDH deck that makes sure my opponents have fun while playing against me. In other words I'm less concerned with winning than with doing fun/creative/interesting things with my deck. I want the group to say "Wow, that's cool". I've never tried to build a non-competitive deck that focuses on something other than winning. So what are some mechanics that would be considered fun by the opponents?

Well, nobody likes to lose. XD But you can build a very fun deck if you play with randomness and trickery. Blue and Red are the most tricky colors, so you can pick up some fun spells from it:
- Dragonshift
- Electrolyze
- Swerve
- Inside Out
- Odds/Ends
- Unnerving assault

In Black you can get some tricks like that, but more sinister
- Imp's mischief
- Dash Hopes
- Perplex
- Rise / Fall
- Showstopper
- Rakdos Augermage

Blue/Red and Black/Red are the most "funny effects" color combinations to play.
Hope that helps!

I'm. It sure if it's "fun" but I have a modern deck, multiplayer only, that's designed to JUST screw with the game. The main cards are:

Forced fruition
Hive mind
Confusion in the ranks
Conjured currency

Those 4 cards lead to some very interesting scenarios.

For additional fun, throw in assault suit.

I know a certified method to make a funny deck:
1) make your budget tiny (20-30$ o less)
2) struggle to make a deck that can win a single battle
3) if you win your opponent is surprised because cheap cards have crushed him, if you lose your opponent is surprised for how far you are in the match.

Maybe try to make a deck that using mostly the coin flipping and clash features, and more important, don't forget to include the Knight of the Hokey Pokey !

Make a deck that lets your opponents make choices with cards like:

Angel of Strife
Fatespinner
Grenzo's Rebuttal
Order of Succession
Raging River
Scrambleverse
Theives Auction

I also chose this cards because they make the game go differently than you would expect, so that your opponent gets to do things they've probably never done in a game of magic before.
For my opponents, a healthy diet of counterspells, artifacts, and crazy combos.

Planeschase is always a way to spice things up though that's not so much you building a deck as it is adding something to the game you're already playing.

Try building the best decks that you can using only commons and uncommon cards. Then add rares and legendary cards when you need to. This way the decks don't seem to overpowered. Also you'll really want to look at the color schemes of the decks that you play since different colors yield different play styles (ex. R/B is usually aggressive while U/B is typically evasive and spell oriented). Build each of the decks to the best of your ability, this way no one deck gets all the favoritism. When everyone is playing at their best and trying out new things, regardless of who wins, everyone is gonna have a good time. A well made deck will lead to much enjoyment, that's just m opinion on that one.

Mixing up the format can cause a lot of interesting things.
1) pauper - 60 cards common only
Pauper is a pretty fun format for most players although a player with deep pockets or tons of cards may do better.
2) Star - 60 card, mono-color deck; requires 5 players
This is my preferred "fun format"
3) Block - make a deck restricting cards to that set block
can be fun to do this sealed if you all can agree to the block

One shop I frequented had some really fun ideas for changing things up. One of the most fun was a five week tournament where each week a different one of the colors was "banned". There was a weekly tournament winner as well as each week you earned points for the overall tournament (16 for 1st, 14 for 2nd, etc. on down to 2 for 8th).

It was a lot of fun, especially the week that your favorite color was "banned".
