would aerial modification eliminate the need to have to crew ? or am I misunderstanding ?

You are correct. If you put Aerial Modification onto consulate dreadnought it would permanently be a an artifact creature and would no longer need to be crewed. The same goes for Siege Modification.
When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all.

Yed, I've gotten wrecked by this combo a couple of times in online drafts. Peacewalker Colossus can also remove the crew cost for 1W.
