The story so far...After saving Kaladesh from the Machinations of Tezzeret, the Gatewatch decide to turn their attention to the greater threat the master of Tezzeret the Schemer, the last of the Elder Dragons of Dominaria, Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker.
Ajani warns the Gatewatch of Nicol Bolas's power, urging caution when confronting him. He leaves Kaladesh, suggesting that the only way to defeat him is to gather allies. Having fought the elder dragon once before, despite winning he fears him.
Despite this, Liliana persuades the Gatewatch to confront Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker on Amonkhet, a plane she believes he created before the Mending. She, however, fails to mention that her motives aren't entirely altruistic, as she plans on using the Gatewatch to combat her contract demon Razaketh.NowThe Gatewatch arrive on Amonkhet by following
Liliana, Death's Majesty, who had previously visited the plane, when
Nicol Bolas brokered her contract.
Upon arriving on this hostile plane of twin suns and seemingly endless
desert, they are attacked by undead, who emerge from the sands pulling and clawing the planeswalkers as they stand on the ever-shifting dunes.
The Gatewatch desperately try to
fend off the waves of desiccated undead that shamble from the sun-scorched sands, attempting to retreat as they do. Liliana, albeit in her element, does not have the ability to control such vast numbers of undead.
It is then that things become worse, the ground tremors and the sands shift violently, a Sandwurm emerges swallowing Liliana in its colossal maw. Witnessing this the Gatewatch being to
panic, Gideon manages to
rally the beleaguered planeswalkers, striking a killing blow on one of the Sandwurms, piercing its throat with his surals. Not one but five Sandwurms remain, the
odds of their survival look less certain when the recently deceased Sandwurm, killed by Gideon becomes animated in death, and strikes again at the Gatewatch. It is then that Liliana emerges from the stomach of a Sandwurm, glistening with the necrotic light of
The Chain Veil, as the Sandwurm wretches and convulses, spilling its entrails upon the sands.
Liliana collapses to the ground, severely weakened, as the Sandwurm reanimates and strikes again at Liliana. Just as the end seems certain
Hazoret the Fervent strikes at the undead wurm with her spear, disintegrating the wurm, just as an arrow whistles past and strikes another to dust. The remaining wurms
disperse,
burrowing into the sand.
Gideon, seems startled by the presence of Gods on Amonkhet, as the Gatewatch proceeds to follow them to the edge of the Hekma, a permanent magical barrier that protects the verdant city of Naktamun, from the undead hordes of the
desert wastes.
