Crew question
« on: July 06, 2017, 12:06:21 pm »
I feel pretty stupid to ask that, but is it possible to prevent a creature from crewing, by giving it protection from artifacts?
Like when I have a tower of the magistrate out and my opponent trys to Crew his Skysovereign, Consul Flagship.

I don't think so. I'm not a judge, and nowhere near an expert on the rules, but here is why I think it won't work: tower of the magistrate offers protection from an artifact. Crewing doesn't cause damage. Also, crewing doesn't specifically target the crew-creature, so one cannot argue that the 'protection' from the tower stops targeting.

If you want to stop a crew, you have easier options: tap em. Creatures with summoning sickness can crew because it doesn't specify the "tap" symbol, and that is what summining sickness cares about. But you do need to turn the creature sideways to crew. So just tap the creature instead of giving it protection :) lots of cheap ways to do that

Thank you  :) ,
I know that there are better options to prevent crewing, but I run the tower anyway and wanted to use it to its full potential^^

It is a pretty versitile card, i get screwed by artifacts plenty of times and I could use this type of effect. I don't blame you at all for trying to maximize it :) Apologies if I seemed preachy about the other options, I really didn't intend it that way - tone is so hard to communicate over the internet, and I answered more than you asked. I suppose you need a blocking creature for you to use the tower on yourself against the ship, and sometimes we find ourselves short a creature at hand for blocking.

Once a player announces that he or she is activating a crew ability, no player may take other actions until the ability’s been paid for. Notably, players can’t try to stop the ability by changing a creature’s power or by removing or tapping a creature

Yep. One would have to tap an opponent's creature prior to them using the creature to crew.

Of course, tapping is a cost, so if you used sonethinglike disallow to prevent a vehicle from becoming a creature, those creatures would still be tapped.

Yes one would have to but depending on what vehicle an opponent has he could crew it anyway because an opponent could respond to your tapping his creature by crewing his vehicle. Smuggler's Copter for example could be crewed in response to you tapping the creature
