Need Help - Not Sure What to do With Alesha
« on: April 07, 2020, 01:14:45 am »
Alrighty bois, it's me, Mr. Wishy-Washy again.

With the Mardu deck being spoiled (https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/ruthless-regiment-full-decklist-reveal-exclusive-commander-2020-preview), I am faced with the decision in terms of what to do with Alesha (link in my sig is my current list). I've been tinkering with a list built around the mardu partner commanders, Silvar, Devourer of the Free and Trynn, Champion of Freedom, but it's just not clicking.
https://deckstats.net/decks/120669/1602319-silvar-devourer-of-the-free-tr/en

I think I like being able to constantly sacrifice and recur creatures (which Alesha is obviously good at) more than the slow trickle of human tokens generated by Trynn. While Silvar's sacrifice ability is potent, I think Humans as a tribe is still too weak as an Aristocrats deck in particular (CleanBelwas, you're the resident Aristocrats expert, what's your take on this?)

So I may not be building a dedicated Human Aristocrats deck, but there are still cards that can go into Alesha, maybe giving the deck an eensy bit of Human synergies. I'm looking at these cards that have been reprinted in the Mardu deck:
General's Enforcer
Thalia's Lieutenant
Xathrid Necromancer
Species Specialist (can choose Goblin if I have Sling-Gang Lieutenant, etc.)
Flawless Maneuver
Sanctuary Blade
Bastion of Remembrance
Molten Echoes (just like Species Specialist, can choose goblin if I so desire)
Path of Ancestry (for another of my decks)

I won't outright buy Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Command Tower, and Skullclamp but will welcome them if I do grab the precon deck.

With these cards in mind, do y'all think I should just buy these cards individually, buy the deck for them, or what? I'm really worried about wasting $10-20 because I want to pick up Ravos, Soultender; Recruiter of the Guard; Goblin Bombardment; etc. and I'm a pretty cheap player, so $20 is a lot to me.

Playtest the deck a bit first. Use Deckstats' built-in starting hand simulator to see if you like the deck (or for something more interactive you can use Untap.in). If you like it, it's worth the money to buy these cards. If they all come in the Mardu deck then it is worth buying, especially considering that both Silvar and Trynn are $15 USD each. Better to buy the sealed product in this case.

I have been using Untap and have been goldfishing a bunch (don't really have the time to play actual Commander matches) at honestly, they feel underwhelming. I'm not even sure if they would go in the 99 of Alesha. I would love to hear the opinions of others who have played them.

If there's any card I'm worried about skyrocketing, it's Flawless Maneuver (also Fierce Guardianship will most definitely be omega expensive) simply because of how good free spells are. There are plenty of other options if that card gets too ridiculous. Besides, these are just prerelease prices.

This. All of this. They're good, but they're just too clunky.

Trynn doesn't generate tokens fast enough and needs to attack. Humans is too narrow to make Silvar truly effective. It limits you too much in what you can do. If it was like Falkenrath Aristocrat and you could sac anything but only humans gave you the benefit, it'd be fine, but having to be a human just makes it so much worse.

I wont be switching from Yahenni or Marchesa any time soon.

Oh yea, I made a Marchesa aristocrats deck. Thought I'd try it out again while in quarantine. It's OK. The card draw offered from the monarch makes it quite consistent. Also, the monarch is fun as hell. Forgot how much I liked Marchesa. It's currently 4-1.

Okay, with the reassurance from CleanBelwas, I'm scrapping those 2. Sort of sad that they made them that weak. There definitely was something there. If they increased the token count by 1 or made Silvar's ability more potent (damage or card advantage of some sort) then I would be a lot more excited. As is, there just isn't enough payoffs specifically for humans.

With that, I think I'll probably just wait it out and hope stuff drops in price. All the cards except Species Specialist, Flawless Maneuver (which isn't even an absolute need), and Path of Ancestry are commons/uncommons and won't be commanding a high price tag, so I don't think the box is worth.

Also, side note. the Mardu deck got the definite shaft in terms of reprints. The other decks had at least 1 big reprint (Propaganda in Sultai, Karametra, God of Harvests in Abzan, The Locust God & Fluctuator in Jeskai, and Lightning Greaves, Solemn Simulacrum, and Etali, Primal Storm in Temur). Maybe Temur isn't quite on the level of the first 3, but Mardu's best reprints are Path of Ancestry, Knight of the White Orchid, and Skullclamp (which got reprinted down to $3 in the Mystery Booster). Anybody else seeing what I'm seeing, or am I just cynical because I already own the Clamp?

Nah you're right. Mardu (and Temur to an extent) got the crap end of the reprints.

Might not be the worst thing ever though. Anje didn't get very good reprints, but it did get K'rrik. Sometimes the new cards make up for it. I'm going Jeskai cycling this time around so haven't really looked at the others all that much, but some of the new stuff I've seen kicking about is pretty strong.

Yea it did pretty well. That Locust God is real nice.

Not to mention a kick ass flying bird shark. That's what really sold it for me. Ordered it as soon as he was spoiled.
