The Deckstats Deck Tools
« on: May 27, 2020, 02:35:12 am »
So, you just built a deck. If haven't built a deck, check this thread out first.

The deck tools are one of the big appeals of using Deckstats. Once you've saved a deck, or if you're viewing someone else's deck, the deck tools let you learn so much more about the deck. There is a visual spoiler for seeing all the cards at once. There is a probability calculator. There are options to sort the cards by price so you can figure out which ones you can afford. Or you can group the cards based on CMC to help decide what cards to cut if your mana curve is too high. There are a lot of useful tools that Deckstats has to offer, if you know how to use them. So let's dive in.

Overview

This tab shows the deck in it's simplest form. Your decklist is written out by name, you can see the mana cost of the cards, and any notes the cards might have. If you're viewing a Commander deck or one of it's derivatives (Oathbreaker, Brawl), then your commander(s) will have it's card displayed in this section. If your deck has a Companion in its Sideboard, it will be highlighted here as well.

Below the decklist is the deck description, any private notes you may have, and the deck tags. All of these can be edited directly from this page, so that's nice. Just click on whichever section you want to edit. Note: Unlike the rest of Deckstats, the deck description uses Markdown Code instead of BBCode.

To the right of the decklist is a smaller section that displays the deck price, with links to buy the deck on other sites. Below that is some useful information including how much of this deck is listed in your collection tracker, the average converted mana cost (CMC) of the deck, and links to share this deck to social media.

Details

The first thing you'll see is four different graphs displaying the mana curve, the distribution of card types, the distribution of mana symbols, and the distribution of mana sources. That last graph might seem a little off sometimes. After all, why does a mono-red deck have lands that tap for green? In reality, these are just the off-color fetch-lands (Wooded Foothills). In a multicolored deck where you'll be using both mountains and forests, Wooded Foothills is effectively both a red and green source.

Below the graphs is the decklist again, but this time with details like the card types (including subtypes), mana cost, color identity, set, prices from up to 5 different sources, and if the card is in your collection. You can adjust which columns you see here by clicking the "Display" button above. If you live in the UK you probably don't care about the TCGPlayer price, but you do care about the Card Market price. Note that a lot of these columns don't appear on mobile devices but you can click the "Toggle Details" button at the bottom of the decklist to display them.

Speaking of which, on a mobile device, this section is actually split in two; the "Details" tab shows the decklist and the "Charts" tab shows the graphs.

Visual Spoiler

Gives a layout of the entire deck in it's visual form. Includes cards in the command zone and sideboard but not the maybeboard.

Starting Hand

Before you commit to building/buying a deck, you'll probably want to give it a test run. This is like playing an imaginary game. Clicking new hand will clear all cards and give a new 7, picked at random. Add new card will... give you another card from the deck, and add a number in the bottom left corner (to help keep track of how many cards you've drawn). The mulligan button will give you a new hand -1 card for each time you've clicked "mulligan". It resets back to 7 once you click "new hand". There is also an icon near the top right corner of each card that toggles whether the card is faded or not. Useful if you want to keep track of what cards you've played.

Probabilities

Do you know what my favorite thing about Deckstats is? The stats.

I could talk about the probability section and all the cool things you can do with it for a really long time. I'll try to make it simple. The bottom half of this section is a table showing the probability of getting a card at least once on a given turn. Note that the chart assumes that you're on the draw for 1 vs 1 formats.

Above it you have a graph giving you a visual representation of the probabilities. Next to the graph is the probability calculator, which lets you make more advanced calculations.

Combined Probability

This section is for calculating the probability of getting a specific card and another specific card. Useful for combo decks if you're trying to calculate the probability of getting Saheeli Rai and Felidar Guardian by turn 4.

Custom Calculation

This section is to calculate how likely you are to get the same card multiple times. Note that there are ways to cheat this a little bit. For example, let's say you're playing a burn deck with 4 copies of Lightning Bolt, 4 Rift Bolt, and 4 Lava Spike. If you want to know the probability of getting these cards but you don't are about which one, just pretend like you are playing a single card 12 times. For example, for getting 3 of them in your starting hand you could use:

The answer is 13.5% in case you were curious. For Commander decks and other singleton formats you can also use this trick. If you want to know the probability of getting mana ramp in your starting hand, and you have 14 ramp cards in the deck:

EDH Suggestions

This tab will only appear if you're viewing a Commander deck. This gives you a direct link to the cards that EDHREC thinks you should use. In other words, it shows the most popular cards associated with your commander that you are not using. Just because it suggests a card, doesn't mean your wrong for not using it. My top suggestions are always taplands like Frontier Bivouac and Orzhov Basilica, which I refuse to use.

Share/Export

If you want to share your deck somewhere, this is where you'll go. If you want to post a link to your deck in the Deckstats forum you just need to copy the URL and it will automatically turn into a decklist when you post it. If you're not posting to Deckstats, you'll have to generate the code using these options.

If your deck is set to private, you can generate a share code here that will allow others to access it.

Revisions

This section lets you view an earlier version of a deck, or compare what has changed between revisions (which cards were added, which were removed). If you're the author of the deck you can also add notes to the revision (something like "added more removal") or revert the deck to a previous revision if you don't like the changes you made.

Discuss

Once someone makes a comment on the deck, a comment bot will make a new thread in the Deck Comments forum. Note that BBCode works here. And if you want to see the comments in the forum rather than in the decklist, just click on "Read all comments" below.

In addition to these tabs, there are also some helpful buttons above the deck list:

Deck Tools

Decklist
When you just want to copy->paste a deck in it's simplest form (like if you're sending it through a text message), use this option. Card comments will stay. There is also a tab here that let's you decide how you want the cards grouped.

Download
If you want to export this deck to another platform like Cockatrice, MTG Arena, or MTGO, you can download the deck as a .dec or .txt file.

Proxies
For when you want to print out the cards. This option will open a new window where you can check off which cards from the deck you want to print. You probably don't need to proxy basic lands, so they are unselected by default.

Print Deck Sheet
If you're signing up for a tournament, you'll need an official deck sheet. This will let you download it as a pdf, and you can include your DCI number if you put that into your account settings. If you're not comfortable sharing this on Deckstats, the blank sheet will have a space for you to write it out.

Compare
If two decks look very similar, you can compare them using this tool. That way you can see what differences there are between your deck and another, and decide if you should make changes based on this other list.

Missing Cards
Shows what cards from the list are not in your collection, and gives links to purchase all of these cards.

Add cards to Collection
If you made this deck, and you own all the cards but haven't gotten around to adding it to your collection, use this button. The button "only missing" is really useful here. It automatically excludes cards already in your collection, and adds ones that you don't have.

Delete
Only available if this is your deck. Be warned; once you delete the deck, there is no way to get it back. You'll have to rebuild it.

Display

Super useful tool. This will allow you to re-order the decklist in practically any way you want. It effects the order of the cards shown in overview, details, the mana curve graph, the visual spoiler, and the probabilities section. The "Group cards by:" option determines what subsections the deck is divided into and "Sort cards by:" determines the order. Note that you can also click the headers of columns in the details section to sort the cards by a given variable (like price, low->high).

You can also choose the columns of the Details table here, and turn card comments on or off.

Copy

Automatically copies every detail about the deck (including tags, card comments, and the description) and gives you the option to save it. It automatically gives a source for which deck it's based on:

Be careful with copying deck though. People will spend a really long time perfecting decks, and some will get annoyed if you blatantly copy the deck and treat it as your own. You can always set a deck as private to avoid this.

Edit

Reopen the deckbuilder to make changes to the decklist. This option is only available if you're viewing your own deck (obviously).

Update details

Make changes to deck attributes without opening the deckbuilder. Useful for if you want to move the deck to another folder.
