Hi

I'm also building a Vilis deck, and I think it will be somewhat similar to yours. Have you gotten to playtest it much? Have you gotten any indications of MVP cards, strengths and weaknesses and so on?

I have tested this quite a bit I've had the deck since just after Vilis first released and it's one that my playgroup fears and is one of my personal favorites.

If you build a Vilis deck, be prepared to fend off a lot of early attacks, your opponents will learn very quickly to get their attacks in before Vilis hits the field. This is one of my favorite decks to play, when it works, it works amazingly, when it doesn't its still a blast to draw as much of my deck as I can.

MVP cards are definitely the ramp cards the faster Vilis hits the field the faster you can get your game plan going. Aside from that cards like Ashes to Ashes, Reckless Spite and Wicked Pact that kill two things and draw you five cards are really useful as well as cards to help get your life back to keep spending it such as Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Kokuso, the Evening Star, and Exquisite Blood. Not of this World is a necessity as no one who goes to spot remove Vilis is going to expect a free counter from mono black.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. All of those cards are on my WIP list. I always end up starting with too many cards and whittling away until I find the right balance. I'm waiting for some important cards to arrive, and then I'll see what I end up with.

I'm really looking forward to testing it, as this will be a quite different deck from my others  :)

Hi again :)

This is what I ended up with, so far, if you're interested:

I've only gotten to play it once, but in that game I followed up the casting of Vilis with a Reanimate targeting a Ghalta in an opponent's graveyard, so that's not a bad start. Eager to test further.

You've got a lot of interesting innovations in your list. It never occurred to me to run any "gain life equal to the number of cards in hand" effects, but I may consider a few in the future. Also, reanimating a Ghalta is a pretty epic play. The biggest limitation on that for me is my playgroup doesn't really run too many huge creatures. I mostly have to rely on my own yard for that.

Also, 100% consider running the new black enchantment kill from Zendikar Rising.

I hadn't really checked out much of the spoilers yet, but that's a good shout. Will definitely put that card in the deck. Not really sure how I feel about them making mono black enchantment removal, even though I know it's been teased. It does mess with the whole color identity thing, so it'll be interesting to see what this means for future releases, if it's "just one card" or if they're gonna let all colors have access to everything in time...
