[Modern] Squirrel Deck
« on: November 08, 2020, 05:40:09 pm »
Hi everyone, this is my second post here, so I'm sorry if it will be a bad one.

I was always a fun of the Squirrel deck, so I'm looking to use them in Modern. I'm not searching a tier-1 deck to win big events, but only a decent deck to win some rounds in a local tournament with a strange and particular deck.

This is the actual list, but I think it's too slow. Any suggestions?

I think you all know the combo, but I repeated it here for sure:
Enchant a Forest (or a Dryad Arbor) with Squirrel Nest and thanks to Intruder Alarm build a Squirrel Army! To do this, I need to untap the enchanted land with an Arbor Elf, a Kiora's Follower or a Voyaging Satyr.

Altar of the Brood is there as an alternative win condition, thanks to its enter the battlefield trigger.

Utopia Sprawl is a way to be more fast with mana, like Growing Rites of Itlimoc (the flip part: Itlimoc, Cradle of the Sun).
Opt, Serum Visions and Growing Rites of Itlimoc are here to faster draw the combo pieces.

Heroic Intervention and Remand are the main "defence" pieces.

The post-side idea is to change in a more aggro deck and/or use the Walking Ballista with a ton of mana.

Deck: Squirrel

//Main
3 Breeding Pool
4 Dryad Arbor
3 Forest
3 Island
4 Misty Rainforest
2 Windswept Heath
2 Waterlogged Grove
3 Altar of the Brood
2 Growing Rites of Itlimoc // Itlimoc, Cradle of the Sun
3 Intruder Alarm
3 Squirrel Nest
4 Utopia Sprawl
3 Heroic Intervention
4 Remand
4 Serum Visions
4 Arbor Elf
3 Kiora's Follower
2 Voyaging Satyr
4 Opt

//Sideboard
4 Adaptive Automaton
2 Beastmaster Ascension
2 Deep Forest Hermit
4 Echoing Courage
2 Garruk Wildspeaker
1 Walking Ballista

Yes. Squirrels. I'm kind of a sucker for squirrels, so I would suggest specifying the Unsanction squirrel lands. Definitely would give the deck some flavor.

Yes, it's a good idea for the basic land slots.

But has someone got any idea to improve the deck's performance?

I am not sure how well this would work as I have never tried it but I wonder what would happen if you added white for cards like idyllic tutor, open the armory, etc so you could reliably search for your combo.

I'm not a modern player, I play EDH so I won't be much help.

I would try Commune with the Gods to dig deeper for combo pieces instead of adding a third colour.
