Underrated Commander/how to improve Vannifar's deck
« on: May 26, 2023, 09:35:13 am »
Hello everybody,
I was searching for fun commander mechanic that change the way you play Magic. I've found some pretty fun commander like Kotori, pilot prodigy or Zada, hedron grinder but there is already some guide for how to build them.
Then, I've found Prime Speaker Vannifar. She is not a popular one but she got some pretty good moves like OTK with some combo. It's a bit complicated with 40 moves to do it in one turn in worst cases. However I think she could be a good competitive commander (of course not a top tier). I've built a deck and I think there is an optimised creature ratio. If you know how I can improve it or if you have other fun commander to recommend let's just discuss about it ! (In the Vannifar's deck list there is some expensive card I have excluded like su-chi or palinchron).

The combo is based on 3 main cards :
- Caller of the pack (the killer one)
- God-Eternal Rhonas (the boost one, can be replace by breat oak guardian if God-Eternal Rhonas isn't in your library)
- Surrak, the Hunt caller (for haste and OTK)

There is an infinite combo with loaming shaman and Nantuko tracer (each other replace creature in your library). Barishi has same effect but work only one time.

There is some protection against counter artifact / enchantement with reclamation sage or cleanup crew.

Some creatures can replace creature from your hand to your library like whirlpool rider, riverwise augur or cavalier of gales.

The list of the combo (I didn't found other way to depicte it)

3 mana minimum at the start of the turn
the carriage return symbolize the Vannifar's ability.
the "!!!" symbolize key card of the combo.
In this combo God-eternal Rhonas triggered 3 times but you can do it infinitelly, and you can sacrifice wonder at the last sacrifice cycle to give flying.

start with llanowar elves
corridor monitor
deceiver exarch
breachning hippocamp
shrine steward -> aura of dominion -> cost 3 mana to enchant Vannifar.
woodland bellower -> hyrax tower scout
sacrifice Hyrax for eyeless watcher (rest 1 scion)
peregrine drake (1 scion 3 mana)
brood monitor(4 scion 2 mana)
sacrifice a scion for myr moonvessel (3 scion 1 mana)
cloud of fearies (3 scion 3 mana)
bounding krasis (3 scion 2 mana)
Tidal Barracuda (or saryth, the viper's fang if Tidal barracuda isn't in your library) (3 scion 2 mana)  !!!
sacrifice woodland bellower for call of the pack (3 scion 1 mana) !!!
sacrifice scion for blisterpod (2 scion 0 mana)
oracle of tragedy (2 scion 0 mana) -> deceiver exarch, eyeless watcher, peregrine drake
deceiver exarch (1 scion 0 mana)
peregrine drake (1 scion 3 mana)
brood monitor (4 scion 2 mana)
zopandrel, hunger dominus (4 scion 1 mana) !!!
sacrifice a scion for tukatongue thallid (3 scion 0 mana)
gleaming barrier (2 scion 0 mana 1 token)
loaming shaman (1 scion 1 mana 1 token)
eyeless watcher (3 scion 0 mana 1 token)
God-Eternal Rhonas (2 scion 0 mana 1 token)   1st time
woodland bellower (1 scion 0 mana 1 token) -> hyrax tower scout
sacrifice hyrax tower scout for surrak the hunt caller (1 scion 0 mana 1 token) !!!
sacrifice woodland bellower for brood monitor (3 scion 0 mana 1 token)
birthing hulk (4 scion 0 mana 1 token)
sacrifice token for blisterpod (3 scion 0 mana)
cloud of faeries (3 scion 2 mana)
bounding krasis (3 scion 2 mana)
barishi (3 scion 2 mana)
God->Eternal Rhonas (3 scion 1 mana)     2nd time
brood monitor (5 scion 1 mana)
sacrifice a scion for myr moonvessel (3 scion 1 mana)
corridor monitor (2 scion 2 mana)
deceiver exrarch (2 scion 2 mana)
wonder (2scion 2 mana)
God-Eternal Rhonas (2 scion 2 mana)      3rd time

Here we go... Vannifar is often seen as a mid-tier (I think) CEDH commander with far faster and consistent combos. While your combo might work, the ultimate goal of Vannifar is to hit Protean Hulk, which allows you to grab combo pieces. The most common is probably Ezuri, Claw of Progress, Sage of Hours, and 4 0-drop creatures that can trigger Ezuri. Infinite turns can find you the stuff to loop Beast Within, destroy all of your opponents permanents, then Cyclonic Rift them away. I'm not a Vannifar expert, but there are some pretty good guides online involving her combo lines and interaction.

I totally agree with you I know there is also a combo with gilded goose and urza, lord high artificer. The idea here is also to have a low cost deck (around 70€ with shipping fees).

yeah, some of the combo lines can be pricy, but basic ones aren't too expensive, and Protean Hulk isn't obnoxiously expensive. The Spellseeker/Crop rotation/Wirewood lodge/Minamo, school at water's edge lines are more expensive. And if you need just one card, Intruder Alarm wins the game on the spot with Vannifar.

My 2 cents:
- Drift of Phantasms to tutor Intruder Alarm
- Riftsweeper to maybe recycle some pieces from exile

The (in my opinion) best line is to pod up to Trophy Mage, find Thousand-year elixir, cast it, then activate it, untapping Vannifar. From here, grab Fatestitcher, untap Vannifar, then find Tidewater Minion and repeat. Your 6-drop can be either Great Oak Guardian or Woodland Bellower, and either way, you're grabbing Protean Hulk. Now, unearth Fatestitcher, untap Vannifar, and find your 8-drop plus the cards from the hulk. Combo Achieved!
