Tier list: mana ramp
« on: June 01, 2023, 05:13:02 am »
Today's theme is ramp! I find that the biggest factor for me is how low-cost the ramp is compared to how much mana you get. Ramping is especially important in the early turns. Probably why I rank mana dorks so high even if they are susceptible to removal. The trade-off is worth it.

Whereas yeasterday I was mostly confident about the lands' placements, there are a few more here that I'm not sure about.

S Tier
Repeatable fast mana

Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Ancient Tomb

A Tier
Restrictive fast mana

Chrome Mox, Mox Opal, Mana Vault, Jeska's Will, Dockside Extortionist

B Tier
1-mana dorks

Birds of Paradise, Avacyn's Pilgrim, Elvish Mystic, Noble Hierarch.

C Tier
2-mana rocks, 2-mana land ramp

Arcane Signet, Fellwar Stone, talismans, signets, Nature's Lore

D Tier
3-mana land ramp, 2-mana dorks

Cultivate, Paradise Druid, Harrow

E Tier
3-mana rocks, 3-mana dorks, 4+ ramp

Solemn Simulacrum, Commander's Sphere, Darksteel Ingot, Skyshroud Claim

Other ramp and their positions:
Carpet of Flowers: A
Metalworker: A
Smothering Tithe: A
Bloom Tender: B
Curse of Opulence: B
Jeweled Lotus: B
Orcish Lumberjack: B
Wild Growth: B
Crypt Ghast: C
Karametra's Acolyte: C
Liquimetal Torque: C
Medallion cycle: C
Somberwald Sage: C
Chromatic Lantern: D
Coalition Relic: D
Diamond cycle: D
Gilded Lotus: D
Sakura-Tribe Elder: D
Everflowing Chalice: E
Sword of the Animist: E
Wayfarer's Bauble: F

Next tier list: targeted removal

Personally, the only thing I'd question is Wayfarer's Bauble at F. I'd put in D, since it's just a glorified 3 mana land ramp that could be done turn 2 with no other ramping.

That's a land, not ramp. Looking at that list though, it was set at be B, likely for the extreme conditions on it being more than just colorless mana

Things to consider out of sequence: Cursed Mirror and Machine God's Effigy. I know Cursed Mirror is a slam dunk in any deck I play it in. I haven't gotten much chance to play Machine God's Effigy. Thoughts?

Gemstone Caverns?

I'd put this at A tier leaning towards B. It's phenomenal if you get it in your opening hand, but pretty garbage otherwise.

E. The ramp funtion of these cards is secondary and not great. I've tried Cursed Mirror a few times and didn't like it.

I agree.  Wayfarer's Bauble is much better than F.  Especially if you're not in green.

Things like Black Market and Caged Sun seem like E tier.

Where do you feel rituals fall on this list?

Happy Brewing!

They're tricky to use, but they do fall under the definition of "Restrictive fast mana". So A tier pushing B, as they are more restrictive than the other examples. There are still a lot of times where I'd rather use ramp that's not one-shot though.

I would rank the 1 mana dorks C, and the 2 mana land ramp and arcane signet at B.  Other 2 mana rocks would stay at C.  Where would you put bonus land drop per turn ie Exploration.  Edit: I would also put Sakura-Tribe Elder at the same Tier as 2 mana land ramp, you can sac him at instant speed, so you will always be able to get that land off him.  Hell I might even place him higher cause you can declare him as a blocker then sac him to get added benefit on top of the land.

Nature's Lore is much better than the Elder. The land entering tapped vs untapped is a massive difference!
