Improving mizzix
« on: March 26, 2024, 09:40:32 am »
Hi everyone,

I've built a mizzix storm deck (intended high power, not cEDH) and was wondering what you think and how I could improve it !
Hope you enjoy the deck and thanks for the comments  :)

I feel that a deck like this will sink or swim depending on what else sits down at the table with it.  In my playgroup, the guys would recognize the threat this deck poses and aggro me out long before I got going.  I would maybe add in another mass damage spell or two against them.  I see chain reaction and blasphemous act in your maybe board.  I haven't done storm much, but I would think you would want to gater a fair number of cards in hand to prepare to do it, so I would prob slot in Thought Vessel and Reliquary Tower.  Decks that draw a lot of cards and cast a lot of spells see huge benefits from graveyard shuffle.  I would put in Time Spiral at least, especially since a few Reiterate copies will generate a huge amount of mana if you have enough experience.  Consecrated Sphinx is an awesome card.  It always gets removed quickly, but that is removal that isn't hitting Mizzix.
Edit: I forgot to talk about Capsize.  It is a very powerful card in Mizzix, but it tends to create games no one enjoys.

Have you tried it out yet? About what turn do you start storming off?

yes, I have tried it many times. It usually storms off on turn 5/6 (one ramp, mizzix + 2/3 mana open turn 5/6). Sometimes I wait a bit longer I there is no rush to have more counters in hand to secure my turn.

Hi, thanks for all your suggestions. I used to run three board wipe, but my playgroup is not very aggro so two is usually enough. At worse I can use a tutor, but yeah if they aggro me more I'd consider it.
I don't really know about reliquary tower. I usually have a lot of cards on the turn I win, and with cards that allow me to play cards from my graveyard I don't mind discarding.  Th problem is that it produces colourless mana which is really bad, I struggle a bit to produce coloured mana...
Time spiral would be really good but it is a bit out of my budget...

Yeah if you are storming off on turn 5/6 reliquary tower isn't really needed, that was my lack of experience with storm showing.

Would any of these cards help?

Aetherflux Reservoir
Dockside Extortionist
Echo of Eons
Jeweled Amulet
Mystic Remora
Reforge the Soul
Wheel of Misfortune

Echo of eons and reforge the soul are interesting. The first thanks to the flashback cost and the second because it is red (and i usualy have a lot of red many compared to blue mana). But if I don't mess up I dont like to shuffle my graveyard (with past in flame, underworld breach and mizzix mastery.

Eatherflux reservoir is 4 mana which is a lot, and it is a bit overkill (a high enough storm can kill easily with the wincons).

Dockside Extortionist is really good but expensive too... Tha fact that it is not sorcery or instant pulls me back. But I'll consider it

Thanks!
