55min game loss to Duncan (incredible game)
Match 1 v. Duncan:
Game 1 is one of the most interesting limited games I’ve played, period. It had a lot of back and forth and was clear from the off that both decks were playing a controlling game. Turn 2 saw a mind sculpt put 3 of my best cards (purphoros, tibalt and temporal mastery) and 4 lands in the graveyard. The follow up play was Hedron crab and after a second mill 3 I knew I actually had to deal with it. Duncan played Thalia’s Lancers and revealed a Dragonlord Ojutai. At this point I still had a memory lapse and Prophetic Bolt. I had fog bank out so wasn’t too worried about the 4/4 first strike. And Duncan was definitely conscious that I’d been leaving mana open. End step I prophetic bolted the crab to stem the mill. I then hit him with kicked Calico skin witch... and he discarded Ojutai and Chancellor of the Annex! Shortly afterwards I played Eater of Days and held up double memory lapse. I managed to come out of the 3 turns relatively unscathed, although my Eater was not untapping this turn. I then decided I needed to Lay Claim Duncan’s wizard that drew a card every turn for 3mana, just to try and cut off resources. I was feeling relatively good at this point, although I did give myself an emblem that meant I had to pay Grixis mana every turn or lose... until Man-o-war hit the Eater... I should have conceded at this point but I wasn’t sure we’d fit another game anyway so thought I’d just play it. Thus, the game went on... Duncan ended up making a pretty reckless attack, I believe thinking I’d block less than I did and then took an extra turn. Eater was back out by now and Duncan was 2 swings from death with no blockers but alas, Deep Analysis to make me draw 4 was enough to stop me. I’m not sure if I missed anything big The game took the entire round timer... we agreed that it was a game that could’ve gone either way - I took a huge amount of pleasure in just being able to stay in a game so long having skipped 4 turns (giving Duncan 2 3-turn sessions). Fog bank MVP just for keeping me alive.
Kev
Game 1 - Eater
Game 2 - Eater
Kev did an amazing job of ramping and got 5 colours out quickly in both games but had no way to deal with Eater- got me to 3 life game one!
Ollie
Game 1 - I took a beating and the turning point was chaos warp on Eater, getting me the witch + 2insects, dealing 6 through Purphoros and then Lay Claim on Dictate of Erebos.
Game 2 - despite mulling to 4 Ollie was super aggro with 2 1/1s attacking from turn 1, taking me to 14 or 12 before I stabilised. After resolving Seek Bolas’ Counsel and rolling 6 I felt very confident as I just had so much playable in sideboard. Felt gross!
