To play your deck at an official ("DCI-sanctioned") tournament you need a deck registration sheet. Here you can download such a sheet pre-filled with the cards in this deck!
Please note: This is not an official DCI service. So please always make extra sure that the sheet contains all the cards in your deck and fulfils all DCI requirements. If you notice anything wrong, please let us know. DCI is a trademark of of Wizards of the Coast LLC.
So I finally finished my Nicol Bolas Deck! Here are my thoughts and explanations:
The first thing you wanna do with it is not a mystery: Try to ramp mana with artifacts like the good ol' Sol Ring, Gilded Lotus or Izzet Signet. It looks like there's not much Mana-Cheating in here but it happens surprisingly often and fast that you overwhelm your opponent with Mana sources. To ensure you can enlarge your mana pool asap, Brainstorm combined with fetchlands is a good way to plan your next turns and to get you what you need. I have to admit here that I'm not 100% happy with my lands (obviously 4 copies of Crumbling Necropolis are way better than the Vivid Creeks 'n Crags) but these were the ones I could find easily and didn't need to order. In the end they do pretty much the same and I never was in trouble of not being able to fix my colors and couldn't do it.
Nicol Bolas loves to totally crush his Opponents, and one way to bring them pain and despair is with heavy single-target removal and the ability to keep it going for ages. Cut // Ribbons is an excellent Card from Amonkhet who gets both sides: 4 Dmg to a creature for only 2 Mana (sad it's sorcery speed though) is an efficient way to clean out the early and midrangy threads your opponent wants to establish. But the fact that it can smash right into your opponents face with all the mana you can afford for it makes it even more painful for them to deal with it. And imagine you got 4 of these, jeez they will cry for sure. And if you can't find any new after the first one, just bring them back with Charmbreaker Devils, Bloodwater Entity or Kess, Dissident Mage. If you're unlucky enough that you can't get a single Cut // Ribbons there is hope: Spellseeker! Spellseeker would make sense to run another few copies of it, but, you know, i just pulled one and was happy to include it. So if your Bolas wants to take a nap in your library and even wouldn't show up even after a several Brainstorms, just cut them to ribbons and you have your win condition right in your graveyards.
But let's talk about the drawing. To draw cards is a beloved mechanic in all TCGs, and it's not hard to understand why: Filling your hand with resources gives you immediate pressure on your opponents because they have much more stuff to face. But we play Bolas, and Bolas wants to maximize the value! So let's get even more upsides for drawing, maybe like hitting the face of your enemies with a simple draw. Bolas' bro from the college, Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind, is so nice to make the most out of your draws. Oh, and don't forget his own creation, The Locust God. What could be a prettier thing to watch as the God-Pharaoh than seeing your loyals swarm the board with tons of 1/1 red/blue flyers with haste or poking them with damage for every card you'll draw. And while we're talking about smashing and value-gain, Sentinel Tower shoots them harder and harder with every spell you've cast in a turn, and we sure get some cheap spells in here.
This should be the main thing your Deck should do: Establish Mana -> Play fast answers like Cut // Ribbons and plan your turns with a combination of Brainstorm + Evolving Wilds -> Establish your artifacts like Mind's Eye and Sentinel Tower -> Go for your bigger stuff like Niv-Mizzet, Unesh, Charmbreaker Devils and so on -> Draw a Bolas, play a Bolas, make them curse the day they printed it.
Just a few notifications in the end: Torment of Scarabs is surprisingly great in this Deck, you deny them life, a card from their hands or a permanent they control. Every single turn. Sometimes x2. THAT is ridiculous. And Torment of Hailfire is this effect on steroids. Wow, what a card! And here is the rest: Sleep slows the swarm, Marchesa, the Black Rose is just good by itself, and Patient Rebuilding is good for you and bad for them, especially when you can abuse the draws you take. And you run blue, you run Counterspells.
I know this Deck is far from being perfect or super-hardcore competitivly good, but that's why I like playing the casual way. Use the cards you really like, don't think of a current meta and just have fun with people you wanna duel with.
So I hope I could explain to you what I was thinking while making this Deck and maybe you want to check it out and get a taste how it feels to spread fear and despair as the Multiverses most evil being: Nicol Bolas.
If you got some interesting ideas for changes and/or ways to change it's style, don't be shy and tell me! :)
