I love making and playing Guildmage decks for Pauper EDH/Commander. My previous deck featured the Korozda Guildmage, and I had an absolute blast playing it at my weekly gaming session. Now I want to focus on a guildmage that I believe is even more powerful- the Vizkopa Guildmage.
Vizkopa Guildmage can do two things for the cost of 1BW - they can either give a target creature Lifelink, or they can create a triggered effect whereby anytime you gain life, each opponent suffers that much damage. At first, I thought this was a pretty good ability on its own. But when I read the rulings on Vizkopa Guildmage, and realized you can stack the lifegain/opponent damage triggered effects multiple times, the real potential of this Pauper Commander stood out.
The theme is pretty straightforward here; look for cheap sources to gain life and burn opponents out. Many creatures in this deck either have Lifelink or, even better, Extort, which is an ability where you can pay either B or W mana when you cast a spell to deal one damage to each opponent and you gain life equal to the total damage dealt. If you are playing a four-player game, then each Extort use (when you have activated Vizkopa's ability) will deal four damage; one for the Extort, and then another three for the fact that you gained three life via Extort.
I also prioritized creatures with Flying, as evasion in Pauper is very important.
There are plenty of removal spells to deal with troublesome creatures/artifacts/enchantments. I added only a few creature buffs, mainly because Lifelink is the most relevant buff and Vizkopa Guildmage can already provide that when needed.
Some lifegain cards are worth specifically mentioning for their potential blowout potential. Crypt Incursion can easily win you the game after a handful of turns have gone by, as it only takes a few creatures in anyone's graveyard to do massive damage via Vizkopa's ability. Same for Congregate. Pauper Commander, at least in my experience, tends to develop clogged boards full of creatures after only a few turns. Having ten or more creatures on the board between a few players after a few turns is not out of the question, and Congregate (at instant speed!) can be absolutely devastating.
Any suggestions are welcomed and appreciated. I suspect I have a bit too much removal, and not enough added card draw, but I like the structure of the deck and look forward to getting it on the table.
