drafting at dueling land; you never know what your deck will be like. 2 players at my pod said after the draft that they were forcing persistent petitioner mill, so maybe that made the draft a little odd? i took condemn p1p1 and followed with compulsive research and sharktocrab. this led me down a bant pathway that felt fine. i opened teferi p2p1, which was delightful, and then dark confidant p3p1. i think the deck was probably optimal without black, but cmon, i'm not above playing for style with bob. given the cards i got, i felt pretty great about this deck. it is loaded with 2 drops, and they are all good! 4 call the conclave and 4 coiling oracle is just wild to me.
played BGr round 1, kind of a sacrifice style deck with mayhem devil and a lot of little dorks. the exact kind of deck that doesn't love 2-mana 3/3s. we played a kind of grindy game 1 (teferi drew me a card at least 3 times!), but once the board was cleared, my topdecks were just stronger than the opponents, and sharktocrab finished them. in g2 it was like that but way faster; coiling oracles let me flow through cards, and their hand was empty with a weak board while i still had 4 cards in hand.
played another BG-based deck match 2, trying to be aggro. this guy was salty and unhappy to be playing against me. he tried to be quick, but again, my low curve blunted that assault, and teferi slowed him down as well. i quickly spread out a board of four bodies, activated sky hussar to draw an extra card, and played bob. he conceded with both of us at 20 life. in g2 he played a questionable enchantment on a weak creature, and i curved utopia sprawl into call the conclave into sharktocrab. he went for a double block on the centaur next turn, and wasteland viper made it a 2-for-2, and he decided he'd had enough vs my crab and selesnya guildmage. 8-minute match against a dude who needs to chill.
losing to boros in the final round felt bad! the dude was all in on bad cheap creatures, but they all attacked pretty well, and he had a few solid uncommons that i saw as well. g1 was a close affair, and i kept playing moldervine cloak on a range of creatures to both block a little but also race. i think the final turn was pretty key; i had two 3/3s and a coiling oracle. opponent at 8 life. i played cloak on oracle and attacked all, forcing a chump and putting opponent to 1 life. i was at 10 life, and opp had 8 damage on the crackback. the haste creature felt like a bad beat, but honestly, opp had 3 cards in hand and had missed multiple land drops (on 4 lands). so by attacking all i was dead to a pump spell, or a burn spell, or a hasty creature. and he is boros aggro! as i passed the turn, i had that sinking feeling that attacking all was a bad play, and i lost and got punished for it. g2 i went t2 centaur into t3 cloak, and the 6/6 attacker that early was enough to win cleanly. g3 i kept island-plains-condemn-2x coiling oracle-2x call the conclave. i lost the game due to no quick green mana and my opponent having the best curve-out draw he could draw up (all 2 drops and 3 land in the top 10 cards). any green source early would have won me the match, i believe - a 3/3 just wrecked his whole gameplan, and the oracles keep the cards flowing. but i drew another plains, then cast compulsive research on t3, then t4 played a green gate that was tapped...and that was that.
i loved this deck, and felt like i punted away a 3-0. that's magic - very fun games either way.
