Origin:

I started playing Magic at the 1990‘s. Back in these days we didn‘t really play with Formats. Since the Merfolk-Tribal has always been my favourite one, my 2nd deck ever was a casual mono blue Merfolk-Deck. Meanwhile I only play Commander / EDH. So some many years ago I had the idea to build a Merfolk-EDH-Deck based on my old one. I chose Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca for obvious reasons.

Main strategy:

Kumena of course needs a huge army of Merfolk creatures to work well. So the main strategy is to bring a lot of Merfolk creatures and Merfolk creature tokens on the board by Lithoform Engine, Deeproot Waters, Kindred Summons, Clone Legion, Rite of Replication, Uncage the Menagerie, Jungleborn Pioneer and Progenitor Mimic.

In multiplayer matches it is however diffcult to keep many creatures on the board since every one plays mass removels. So another important thing is being able to protect the gang by Cryptic Command, Disallow, Heroic Intervention, Plasm Capture, Spell Swindle and Voidslime.

Merfolk creatures are pretty weak. So the last important point is to make them stronger. Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca can do it by his third ability himself, but needs a lot of creatures for that. So you need other options like Stoneforge Masterwork, Sword of Light and Shadow, Sword of War and Peace, Hadana's Climb // Winged Temple of Orazca, Coralhelm Commander, Deeproot Elite, Lord of Atlantis, Master of the Pearl Trident, Merfolk Mistbinder, Merfolk Skydiver, Merfolk Sovereign, Merrow Reejerey and even Verdant Confluence.

The Deck wins usually through combat damage by the masses of Merfolk creatures, sometimes through Commander damage.

Alternative win options:

The Merfolk-Deck itself doesn’t have alternative Win Options, but could steal one with Seasinger or Empress Galina, if it would be necessary.

Synergies & Combos:

Wanderwine Prophets + Merfolk Sovereign + Progenitor Mimic = Infinite Turns

Wanderwine Prophets + Merfolk Sovereign + Sword of Light and Shadow + another Merfolk = Infinite Turns (in this case maybe the Merfolk Sovereign is not even necessary)

Kiora’s Follower + any Clone of it (like Glasspool Mimic) + Illusionist’s Bracers = Infinite untap and infinite mana.

Salvager of Secrets or Shipwreck Dowser + Clone Legion or Rite of Replication = lots of creatures

Surgespanner + Merrow Harbinger or Forerunner of the Heralds = infinite Merfolk-Tutor

Mystical Tutor + Seasons Past = endless return from graveyard
